Transformation in Pakistani
Society

Definition of Transformation:
Transformation is the
process of making a thorough or dramatic change in the
form, appearance, nature, or character of something. It
involves a significant alteration that results in a new or
improved state. This change can be physical, emotional,
social, or organizational, and often implies a positive or
evolutionary shift.
In essence, transformation is the act of turning something into
a different, often better, version of itself.
-Why Pakistani Society Transformed?
Pakistani society has
transformed due to globalization, technological
advancements, economic shifts, and changing socio-
political dynamics. Increased internet access and social
media exposure have introduced new ideas, influencing
cultural norms and lifestyles. Urbanization, economic
development, and projects like CPEC have reshaped
employment patterns, while education and digital
platforms have empowered the youth. Greater political
awareness, social movements for gender equality, and
religious moderation have also contributed to this shift.
Additionally, environmental concerns and climate
change awareness are driving new policies. Despite
challenges like political instability and economic
disparity, Pakistan continues to evolve towards a more
modern and connected society.

-Pakistani Society before transformation:

Before transformation,
Pakistani society was largely traditional, conservative,
and agrarian. Life was centered around joint family
systems, strong tribal and feudal influences, and rigid
gender roles. The economy relied heavily on agriculture,
with limited industrialization and employment
opportunities. Education, especially for women, was less
accessible, and media was state-controlled with minimal
global exposure. Political participation was restricted,
with long periods of military rule shaping governance.
Communication was slow, primarily through letters,
newspapers, and limited television broadcasts. Religious
and cultural values were deeply rooted, with little
room for debate or modernization. Overall, society
was more insular, with slower social progress
compared to today’s rapidly evolving digital and
globalized landscape.

After transformation, Pakistani society
has become more dynamic, modern, and interconnected,
shaped by globalization, technology, and socio-political
changes. Urbanization has increased, leading to a shift
from agrarian lifestyles to industrial and service-based
economies. Digitalization has revolutionized
communication, business, and education, with social

Definition of
Traditionalism:

After transformation, Pakistani society has become

changes. Urbanization has increased, leading to a
shift from agrarian lifestyles to industrial and
service-based economies. Digitalization has

Definition of Modernism:
Modernism is a
philosophical, cultural, and artistic movement that
embraces progress, innovation, and change while
rejecting traditional norms and values. It
emphasizes reason, scientific advancements,
individuality, and new ways of thinking in areas
such as art, literature, architecture, and social
structures. Modernism seeks to break away from
historical conventions and adapt to contemporary
challenges, often promoting secularism,
technological development, and social reforms.

1. Core Philosophy

·Traditionalism: Many rural communities still

follow centuries-old customs and social norms.

·Modernism: Urban centers like Karachi,

Lahore, and Islamabad are adopting modern lifestyles
influenced by globalization.

2. Cultural Adaptation
·Traditionalism: Some families discourage
Western influences, preferring local customs in clothing,
festivals, and social norms.

·Modernism: Young Pakistanis engage in

global pop culture, social media trends, and fusion fashion.

3. Social Structure

·Traditionalism: Joint family systems are

still common, particularly in rural areas and among conservative
households.

·Modernism: Urban families are

increasingly shifting towards nuclear family structures for
independence and better career opportunities.

4. Role of Religion

·Traditionalism: Religious scholars and

clerics have strong influence in politics and daily life.

·Modernism: There is a growing

acceptance of progressive interpretations of religion,
particularly among the youth and educated class.

5. Education & Knowledge

·Traditionalism: Madrassas and

conventional rote-learning education still dominate in many
parts of the country.

·Modernism: Digital learning, online courses,

and STEM education are gaining popularity, especially in
private education.
Conclusion
Pakistani society reflects a mix of traditional and modern
elements. While rural and conservative communities
uphold traditional values, urban centers and the younger
generation are pushing for progressive changes. The
future of Pakistan depends on finding a balance where
cultural heritage is preserved while embracing modern
advancements for economic, social, and political growth.
