Lesson 1 : Resources

Brainstorming
In order to function, our world depends on different energy resources. With your partner, try
to answer these questions about them.

1. Match pictures (A - G) with each type of energy resources: gas, crude oil, coal, solar
power, wind power, hydroelectric power, geothermal power.
2. Which energy resources are called fossil fuels? Do you know why they are called so?
3. Which ones are called alternative energies? Why do you think they are called
"alternative"?

Reading: Sustainable Energy

Activity 1: Skimming
Read the article quickly and tick  the best alternative (a - b - c - d) to complete the
statement below
The article deals with:

a. the environmental movement.

b. fossil fuels and global warming.

c. fossil fuels and renewable energy.

d. environmental pollution.
Sustainable energy
The environmental movement emphasizes sustainability of energy use and development.
Renewable energy is sustainable in its production; the available supply will not be diminished
for the foreseeable future - millions or billions of years. "Sustainability" also refers to the
ability of the environment to cope with waste products, especially air pollution. Sources which
have no direct waste products (such as wind, solar, and hydropower) are seen as ideal in this
5
regard.

Fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas are not renewable. For example, the
timing of worldwide peak oil production is being actively debated but it has already happened
in some countries. Fossil fuels also make up the bulk of the world's current primary energy
10 sources. With global demand for energy growing, the need to adopt alternative energy sources
is also growing. Fossil fuels are also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, leading to
concerns about global warming if consumption is not reduced.

Energy conservation is an alternative or complementary process to energy development. It

reduces the demand for energy by using it more efficiently.

Activity 1: Skimming

The text deals with:

...............................................................................................................

Widely available replacements for traditional tungsten incandescent

light bulbs are Halogen and compact fluorescent lamps.

A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), also called compact fluorescent light, energy-saving
light, and compact fluorescent tube, is a fluorescent lamp designed to replace an
incandescent lamp. Some types fit into light fixtures formerly used for incandescent lamps.
The lamps use a tube which is curved or folded to fit into the space of an incandescent
bulb, and a compact electronic ballast in the base of the lamp.
Compared to general-service incandescent lamps giving the same amount of visible light,
CFLs use one-fifth to one-third the electric power, and last eight to fifteen times longer. A
CFL has a higher purchase price than an incandescent lamp, but can save over five times its
purchase price in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime. Like ail fluorescent lamps, CFLs
contain mercury, which complicates their disposal. In many countries, governments have
established recycling schemes for CFLs and glass generally.

CFLs radiate a wider area than incandescent lamps. Improved phosphor formulations have
ameliorated the perceived color of the light emitted by CFLs, so that some sources rate the
best "soft white" CFLs which are subjectively similar in color to standard incandescent.
CFLs are produced for both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) input. DC CFLs
are popular for use in recreational vehicles and off-the-grid housing. There are various aid
agency initiatives in developing countries to replace kerosene lamps, which have associated
health and safety hazards, with CFLs powered by batteries, solar panels or wind generators.
CFLs in solar powered street lights, use solar panels mounted on the pole.

Due to the potential to reduce electric consumption and pollution, various organizations
have encouraged the adoption of CFLs and other efficient lighting. Efforts range from
publicity to encourage awareness, to direct handouts of CFLs to the public. Some electric
utilities and local governments have subsidized CFLs or provided them free to customers as
a means of reducing electric demand.

Engine Types and Engine Systems

Brainstorming
Look at the picture below and answer the
questions.
1. What happened to the man’s car?
2. How can you explain that situation?
3. What do we call those types of engine?

Activity 1: Skimming

Read the text and choose the best alternative to complete the following sentence.

a. The text is about:

b. The importance of mechanics in life
c. The history of heat engines
d. The effect of engines in the air
e. The building of atmospheric engines.

An engine is a
mechanical
contrivance by
means of which
some form of
energy is
converted to useful
work. The first
mechanical
utilization of an
energy source to
do work dates back to the 1 st-c BC, when simple water
wheels were used to lift water from rivers and to mill grain.
Although it might be considered that these were examples of
simple hydraulic ' engines ', it is generally accepted that the
term engine is associated with a much later period of
technological development; that of the Industrial Revolution.
Engines are normally associated to| with the conversion of
fossil fuels (thermal energy sources) into useful work, and so
we may fully refer to them as heat engines.
The most significant heat-engine development was that of the steam engine. The use
of steam to produce is| a mechanical effect has its origin in the 1st-c AD, when the
mathematician and inventor of Alexandria described a steam-operated 'wheel' which
utilized the thrust effect of escaping steam jets. This device was really only a toy, and
no attempt was made to find a use for it. Hero demonstrated other interesting
arrangements and. although none of them led to the development of a practical heat
engine. he did go some way to demonstrate that when a fluid such as water or air is
heated, it is possible to use it to bring about some form of mechanical effect.
In 1661, in Magdeburg, Hero invented a device consisting of a close-fitting piston within
a pipe with a closed end. Using a vacuum pump (which he had also developed), he created
a partial vacuum inside the pipe, the pressure there falling below that of the atmosphere.
Atmospheric pressure acting on the other side of the piston then forced it into the pipe.
The piston was connected by a system of ropes and pulleys to a weight which was then
raised. This was the forerunner of the various heat engines which were generally
categorized as atmospheric engines, since they ail made use of the fact that atmospheric
pressure, in conjunction with a partial vacuum created within a piston-cylinder
arrangement, could do useful work.

Notes

Summary of Heat Engines

 Types of heat engines include internal and external, intermittent, and

continuous combustion, reciprocating and rotary engines.

 All engines have several systems that enable the engine to operate
efficiently. These include the cooling. fuel, lubrication, ignition,
starting, charging, air/exhaust,computer and pollution controls.

 Any combustion engine requires air fuel and ignition mixed together at the
right time for correct operation.

 The bore and stroke are used to calculate the displacement of a heat
engine.

 Diesel engine compression ratios are much higher than they are for
gasoline engines.

 The rotary engine uses a triangular rotor placed in a special housing to

create intake, compression, power and exhaust.

 Continuous combustion engines commonly used include the gas turbine,

steam turbine, and jet (reaction) engine.
Lesson 2
Servicing a Car

Brainstorming
Look at these two pictures and answer the questions below.

1. What is the man doing?

2. What do you call a regular inspection of a car at the
mechanic's?
3. Why is it so important?

Activity 1: Skimming
Read the text quickly and circle the letter of the option (a-b-c-d) that best completes the
statement below.

The text is about

a. the importance of buying a car.
b. the importance of producing a car.
c. the importance of servicing a car
d. the importance of selling a car.

A motor vehicle service is a series of maintenance procedures

carried out at a set time interval or after the vehicle has
travelled a certain distance. The service intervals are
specified by the vehicle manufacturer in a service 5
schedule and some modem cars display the due date for
the next service electronically on the instrument panel.

The completed services are usually recorded in a service

book which is rubber stamped by the service centre upon
completion of each service. A complete service history
usually adds to the resale value of a vehicle.

Regular car servicing is required to ensure that your car

works efficiently and safely. Regular services will extend the life of your car. A regular 10

car service helps prevent dangerous potential failures in your braking and steering

15
system. (The amount of work required in regular services will depend upon the number
of kilometers travelled. Some services are required every 6 months or 10,000
kilometers, however other components will require a checkup every 20,000 or 50,000
kilometers. Your vehicle logbook and handbook often contains a detailed list of the
work and tasks involved for each level of service. A 12 monthly service will
include everything in the six monthly service plus: cleaning the air filter element,
renewing the spark plugs, changing the manual transmission fluid, checking rear axle
lubricant level and re-greasing front wheel bearings, adjusting park brake, wheel
alignment and steering angles checked and headlight beams aligned.

Regular car services are important to keep your car road worthy and ensure your safety
when on the road. Find a reliable mechanic in your area who can service your car on a
regular basis.
