LESSON 1
ACTIVITY 1
Task 1. Exploring My Mother Tongue
1. List 20 commonly used words in your mother tongue that you use at home. Write
these in the boxes provided below.
ANALYSIS
Now that you are done with the tasks in the activity section of this lesson, you are
surely ready to answer some relevant questions about the pertinent concepts of MTB-
MLE and their implementation. Use your experiences as well as the findings that you
gathered in the tasks that you have accomplished. Write your response to each
question in the space provided. Good luck!
1. What did you find most interesting in using the mother tongue of a child in his or
her early childhood education? Why?
Ans: For me, using a child’s mother tongue in early education is really helpful because
the children learn best when they understand the language. It’s like speaking their
native language at home, but in school too. They feel comfortable and can focus on
learning new things. So, when the kids feel confident in their own language, they are
more likely to be brave in learning and it can help them to build a strong base for
learning the other languages later on like English or Filipino. The teacher also learned
the mother tongue of his/her children that’s also the interesting for me because not just
the children gain a knowledge from a teacher but also the teacher too through
discovering or encountering a words that’s not familiar for a teacher.
2. Knowing that the Philippines is a multilingual country, do you think the
implementation of MTB-MLE in our regions is beneficial to our learners? Explain
your view.
Ans: Yes, its beneficial to our learners because in Philippines has many different
languages by using the local language in school helps everyone to learn. The child
gains a better understanding, learn more and easily cope up the lessons. And also, it
helps the local languages keep alive and strong. I think of it like this, imagine trying to
learn a game in a language that we don’t understand. It would be much harder than if
someone explained it well in our own language. We can easily do the game properly.
3. In your own opinion, why did the Department of Education require schools to use
the mother tongue as a subject and as a language for teaching and learning from
Kindergarten up to Grade 3?
Ans: For me, DepEd implement this kind of curriculum because they see the learning
grasp of the children if the mother tongue used in school especially in the primary
grade. The understanding of the children is better when they use a language that they
already know. It makes them comfortable and confident in expressing their ideas or
expressing themselves. They can relate and connect it also in their culture or heritage,
which is important to their identity. Lastly, children feels engaged interested in learning
where in they can use a language that feels familiar to them.
4. In your own view, what are the needed requirements in order to provide a strong
MTB-MLE program?
Ans: In my point of view, to have a strong MTB-MLE program is that we need to make
sure our teachers are well-equipped in using the local language, the quality learning
materials in that language, involvements of parents and community. Because they really
need to understand why this mother tongue need to teach in school. It’s important for
everyone to work together to support the program success and help the students learn
effectively.
APPLICATION
TASK 4
As a future teacher, I see the potential of MTB-MLE to create a more inclusive and
engaging learning environment. It’s about recognizing the value of each child’s
language and culture and using it as a bridge to learning. I believe that when students
feel connected to their language and culture, they are more likely to be motivated and
engaged in their education. MTB-MLE is not just about teaching in the mother tongue;
it's about creating a learning experience that is culturally relevant and meaningful for all
students. It’s about building a stronger foundation for learning, fostering a love for
language and culture, and empowering students to be successful learners and citizens.
It’s great that the Department of Education is making this a priority. I think it’s a
fantastic way to help kids feel confident and successful in school. They can focus on
learning new things instead of struggling with a language they don’t understand. It’s a
chance for them to learn, improve, and show their cultural heritage. This is a chance for
kids to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. It’s a chance for them to be proud of
who they are and where they come from.
