F3 2nd term Science (Physics) Practice (Ch2.

Refraction)
Name:_________________Class:___________Class No.:_____________Grade:__________
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. The figure below shows a light ray passing through three materials X, Y and Z.

A. State the laws of refraction.

B. Arrange the materials X, Y and Z in ascending order of their refractive indices.

2. A light ray enters a 5 cm thick parallel-sided glass block at

an angle of 60° as shown. The refractive index of glass is
1.5. Find the value of x, y and z.

3. A marble is placed at the bottom of a cup which is fully filled with water. It is viewed from below as
shown in the figure. Refractive index of water is 1.33.

A. Find the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction at the water surface for the light ray shown.
B. Does the marble appear to be at a higher position or a lower position? Explain your answer briefly.
C. Can the marble still be seen if there is no water in the cup?
D. Draw a ray diagram to illustrate your answer.
4. A light ray strikes a parallel-sided glass block at an angle of 45° as shown below. The glass block is 5 cm
thick. Refractive index of the glass block is 1.5.

A. Complete the path of the light ray until it goes into air again. Find the angles the emergent ray
makes with the normals at the boundaries.
B. Is the incident ray parallel to the emergent ray?

5. The refractive index of ice is 1.31. Find the critical angle for an ice-air interface.

6. The critical angle for an oil-air interface is 43.2°. Find the refractive index of oil .

7. Elaine carries out an experiment to study total internal reflection as

shown. The refractive index of glass is 1.5.
A. Explain why the light ray is not bent at A.
B. Elaine increases the angle of incidence θ slowly and she finds that
the refracted ray travels along the plane surface of the
semicircular glass block when θ reaches a certain value. Find the
value of θ.
C. If the whole set-up is placed inside a tank which is filled with water, what is the new value of θ to
make the refracted ray travel along the plane surface of the semi-circular glass block? Given that the
refractive index of water is 1.33.

8. A section of an optical fibre made of perspex is shown below. A light signal is incident at an angle θ The
refractive index of perspex is 1.52.

A. State the conditions for total internal reflection to occur.

B. Calculate the critical angle of perspex.
C. If θ = 60°, can the signal be transmitted along the optical fibre?
