Pull off test Procedure

The document outlines a procedure for conducting a pull-off test to evaluate the adhesion strength of a coating system on metal substrates. It involves surface preparation, fixing aluminum dollies with epoxy adhesive, and measuring the force required to detach the dollies to determine pull-off strength. The results include the recorded pull-off strength and the area of detachment after the test is completed.

Procedure to carry out Pull off Test

This test method covers a procedure for evaluating the pull-off strength (commonly
referred to as adhesion) of a coating system from metal substrates. The test
determines either the greatest perpendicular force (in tension) that a surface area
can bear before a plug of material is detached, or whether the surface remains
intact at a prescribed force (pass/fail). Failure will occur along the weakest plane
within the system comprised of the test fixture, adhesive, coating system, and
substrate, and will be exposed by the fracture surface.

Procedure:

1. Abrade the surface of the coating to make the surface even, coating should
be free from all foreign elements like dirt, oil, grease etc.

2. 50 mm aluminum dollies has to be fixed to the substrate by using 2 pack

epoxy adhesive. Sufficient quantity of adhesive has to be used while gluing
the dollies.
Allow the epoxy coating to cure for at least 24 hours.

3. Extract the fixed dollies using Portable pull off Adhesion tester following the
manufacturer recommendation.

4. The value at which dolly is detached from the system is recorded as pull off
strength of the coating.

5. After pull of test carried out check the area of detachment and record the
same.
