The History of Search Engines

: the exploration of the Search Engines used in decades and the old
Search Engines that serves as a foundation and each engine’s uniqueness
and uses towards the future of search technology used by everyone
nowadays.

A Presentation by Kate Millicent Lopez

Definition of Search Engine and its Examples
According to Britannica, search engine is a computer program to find answers to
queries in a collection of information, which might be a library catalog or a database but is
most commonly the World Wide Web. A Web search engine produces a list of computer files
listed on the Web that contains or relate to the terms in a query entered by the user into a
field called a search bar. Most search engines allow the user to join terms with such
qualifiers as and, or, and not to refine queries. They may also search specifically for
images, videos, phrases, questions, or news articles or for names of websites.
Examples of Search Engines
The History of Search Engines
According to Telefonica, a website specializing in technology updates and information.

Mathew Gray, a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of

Technology (MIT) developed Wandex with the intention of
creating a scientific tool with which to measure the size of the
Internet for purely academic purposes, quantifying the web
pages contained on the Internet and consequently their size.
In the late 1990s, Aliweb, WebCrawler or AltaVista became
very popular. Aliweb was announced in 1993 and presented a
year later and, unlike Wandex, which only searched by URLs, it
also began to search the contents of pages.

Also from 1994 and still active today is WebCrawler, a meta-

search engine that combines searches from other popular
search engines and at the time was the first to offer full text
searches.
Aliweb
Back in 1992, Martijn Koster, a software developer at Nexor, built some software to manage and
index the emerging Web. His work, called Aliweb, is acknowledged as the world's first search
engine. The BBC incorrectly cite WebCrawler, but Aliweb was announced in 1993 prior to
WebCrawler and presented at the first World Wide Web conference in 1994.
These are the ways, Aliweb serves as a search engine:
 People write descriptions of their services in a standard format into a file on the Web, by hand or
using automatic tools.
 They then tell ALIWEB about this file.
 ALIWEB regularly retrieves all these files, and combines them into a searchable database.
 Anybody can come and search this database from the Web.

Aliweb
WebCrawler
The evolution of search engines took another leap forward with the introduction of
WebCrawler in 1994, developed by Brian Pinkerton at the University of Washington. WebCrawler
was groundbreaking as it was the first search engine to index the entire text of web pages, not just
titles and headings. This allowed for more detailed searches, as users could now search for any
word on a web page, significantly improving the accuracy and relevance of search results.

The Rise of Google and Modern Search Engines
The Inception of Google and Its Impact
Google’s inception in 1998 marked a revolutionary turn in the history of search engines. Founded by Larry Page and
Sergey Brin, two Stanford University students, Google introduced a new approach to search: ranking pages based on
their backlinks.
Note: Pagerank is a Google Algorithm

Implemented through their unique algorithm, PageRank, which assessed the quality and
quantity of links to a page to determine its relevance and importance. Google’s clean
interface and highly relevant search results quickly gained popularity, setting it apart from
its competitors. The impact of Google was profound – it not only dominated the search
engine market but also transformed how information is indexed, searched, and retrieved on
the internet. Google’s continuous updates and innovations in search technology have made
it a benchmark for modern search engines.
According to Global Software Support

It considers the quality of links, not just the number of links.

It gives more weight to links from reputable pages.
Yahoo! Search, MSN Search, and Other Competitors

Before Google’s dominance, Yahoo! was a major player in the search engine market. Initially
a web directory, Yahoo! transitioned to a full-fledged search engine, offering various
services including email, news, and shopping. MSN Search, launched by Microsoft in 1998,
was another significant competitor, later rebranded as Bing in 2009.
