Copy of Pedigree Charts Interactive Worksheet Student

The document provides instructions for completing an interactive worksheet on pedigree charts, including definitions of symbols and relationships. It covers types of traits such as autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and sex-linked traits, along with examples and practice questions. The worksheet aims to enhance understanding of genetic inheritance patterns through visual representation.

Pedigree Charts: Interactive Diagram Worksheet

Directions: Open the interactive diagram using the link provided here: Pedigrees (genially.com) or
scan the QR code to the right

Once the link is open, you will complete the worksheet by clicking through the interactive.

PEDIGREE SYMBOLS

Click the “speech bubble” button at the top and read through the rest of the graphic on this section to answer
the questions.

1. What is a pedigree chart? A pedigree chart is a diagram that shows the occurrence and
inheritance of traits across generations within a family.

2. Biological females are represented with what shape?

Circle. Biological males are represented with what
shape? Squares

3. Complete the symbol key to the right by writing on

each symbol what type of individual it represents. The
first one is done for you as an example.

Click the “NEXT” or right-side arrow to move to the next section.

SETTING UP A PEDIGREE CHART

Click the arrow buttons to complete this section.

4. What does a horizontal line between two individuals (as shown in the example) mean? Mating
relationship.

5. What do the roman numerals on the left side tell you? They indicate the generations within the
pedigree chart.

6. A horizontal line that connects individuals above the circles and/or squares means… These
individuals are siblings (shared offspring of the same parents).

7. Can you determine which offspring was born last? Give a brief explanation in your response. Yes,
offspring are listed in order from left to right, with the last-born being the rightmost individual in
that generation.

8. In the pedigree chart example, how many generations are there?

______________3___________________

9. How many biological males and biological females are in this pedigree chart? #males___3__
#females__4___
10. Individual III-1 is related to individual I-1 in what way? III-1 is the granddaughter of I-1.

Click the “NEXT” or right-side arrow to move to the next section.

TYPES OF PEDIGREES Genetic patterns can be studied and visualized using pedigree charts

*Optional: Click the “play” button at the top to watch the Amoeba Sisters video which will go in depth and
review complete dominance, Punnett squares, and pedigrees.

Autosomal Dominant
11.Will at least one parent be affected with the trait? yes
Traits
12.Will offspring be affected with the trait? if they inherit the dom
allele they will have the trait

Other notes: Affected parents can only have unaffected offspring if

the affected parent is heterozygous. There are no carriers in
autosomal dominant traits.

Autosomal Recessive
13.Can unaffected parents have affected offspring? yes
Traits
14. In order for two unaffected parents to have affected offspring,
both parents must be carrier/ heterozygous.

Other notes: Affected trait will often skip generations. There will be
carriers in autosomal recessive traits.

Sex-Linked Traits
Remember: XX is biological female and XY is biological male. For
X-linked traits, we only write the alleles for the X chromosome.

15.Which biological sex is more affected in sex-linked traits? Males

16.Why?

Males have only one X chromosome, so they express any trait

on it, whether dominant or recessive.
Click the “NEXT” or right-side arrow to move to the next section.

SAMPLE PEDIGREES: PRACTICE

SAMPLE 1: FRECKLES (AUTOSOMAL DOMINANT TRAIT) Review the pedigree chart and answer the
questions.

17. There are three questions provided on the pedigree. Try to

answer them before hovering over the question marks to
see the answer. How did you do?
I did well

18. Write in the genotype for each person on the pedigree.

Remember to use F and f. FF, ff, ff, Ff, Ff, Ff, ff

SAMPLE 2: SICKLE CELL ANEMIA (AUTOSOMAL RECESSIVE

TRAIT)Review the pedigree chart and answer the questions.

19. How many sets of grandparents are shown on this pedigree? 2

20. What is the genotype of the son in generation 2? How do you know? Ss because his dad has it but
his mom doesn’t making him heterozygous

21. Which individuals on this pedigree are affected with sickle cell anemia? I1, II5, III2

SAMPLE 3: COLORBLINDNESS (SEX-LINKED RECESSIVE TRAIT) Review the pedigree chart and
answer the questions.

22. How many individuals on this pedigree are

colorblind? 1

23. What is the genotype of the female in

generation I? XBXb

24. What is the genotype of the male in

generation 3?XbY

25. Write in the genotype for each person on the

pedigree. Remember to give each person
the correct XX and XY with the correct allele.
B is normal vision and b is colorblind vision.
XBXb, XBY, XBY, XBXB, XBXb, XBY, XbY, XBXB
