WORKSHEET 2(C)
CUBE AND CUBE ROOTS

CUBES
When a number is multiplied by itself three times, the product obtained is called the cube of
that number. The cube is denoted by to the power of 3.
Note: The cube of any positive number is always positive and negative number is always
negative.
Example:
1) 03 = 0
2) 43 = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64
3) (-5)3 = (-5)x (-5) x (-5) = -125
𝟐 𝟐 𝟐 𝟐 𝟖
4) ( )3 = x x =
𝟓 𝟓 𝟓 𝟓 𝟏𝟐𝟓
𝟑 𝟑 𝟑 𝟑 𝟐𝟕
5) (− )3 =(- ) x (− ) x(- ) = −
𝟖 𝟖 𝟖 𝟖 𝟓𝟏𝟐
6) (0.2)3 = 0.2 x 0.2 x 0.2 = 0.008

CUBE ROOTS
The cube root of a number is that number which when multiplied by itself three times gives the
given number.
Cube root is represented by the symbol “∛ “.
Note: Cube root of a positive number is always positive and cube root of a negative number is
always negative.
Example:
𝟑
7) √𝟔𝟒 = 4 as 4 x 4 x 4 = 64
𝟑
8) √𝟏𝟐𝟓 = 5 as 5 x 5 x 5 = 125
𝟖 𝟐 𝟐 𝟐 𝟐 𝟖
9) Cube root of 𝟐𝟕 = 𝟑 as 𝟑 x 𝟑 x 𝟑 = 𝟐𝟕
Method for finding Cube root:
 Factor Method :
Steps :
1) Express the given number as product of its prime factors.
2) Make groups, each consisting of three identical factors obtained in step 1.
3) Take one factor from each group and multiply them together.
4) The product so obtained is the cube root of the given number.
Example:
10) Find the cube root of a) 64 b) 216
Solution:
a) Since 64 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
3
Therefore, Cube root of 64 = √64
= √(2 𝑋 2 𝑋 2)𝑋 (2 𝑋 2 𝑋 2)
=2x2
= 4 (Ans)
b) Since 216 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 3
3
Therefore, cube root of 216 = √216
= √(2 𝑋 2 𝑋 2)𝑋 (3 𝑋 3 𝑋 3)
= 2x3
= 6 (Ans)
11) Find the cube root of 3375
Solution:
Since 3375 = 5 x 5 x 5 x 3 x 3 x 3
3 3
√3375 = √ (5 𝑋 5 𝑋 5)𝑋 (3 𝑋 3 𝑋 3)
Therefore, Cube root of 3375 = 5 x 3
= 15 (Ans)

125
12) Find the cube root of .
64
Solution: Since, 125 = 5 x 5 x 5
64 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
3 125 3 5𝑋5𝑋5
√ 64 = √{ ( 2 𝑋 2 𝑋 2)𝑋 ( 2 𝑋 2 𝑋 2)}
