What’s In
Let’s see how far you had gone in grade 4 about time.
● How many minutes in one hour?
● How many seconds in one minute?
● How many hours in 60 minutes?

What’s New

Consider this.

Elmer eats his lunch at 2:00 in the afternoon. How will you write it in 24-
hour clock time? Is 2:00 in the afternoon the right time to eat lunch? Why?

What is It

Ante Meridiem (a.m.) and Post Meridiem (p.m.) is used in a 12-hour

clock at the end to denote whether the time is in the morning or afternoon.

Ante meridiem (a.m.) – is used after 12 midnight and before 12 noon.

- (12:01 a.m. – 11:59 a.m.)

Post meridiem (p.m.) – is used after 12 noon and before 12 midnight.

- (12:01 p.m. – 11:59 p.m.)

A 24-hour clock is called as Military Clock since soldiers are the ones
who mostly use it. It does not require a.m. and p.m. to be written after the time
as it starts at 00:00, which is 12 midnight, then back 00:00 after 23:59 (11:59
p.m.). H or Hours is placed at the end to indicate the use of the 24-hour clock
format.

The table below shows the 12-hour clock time and 24-hour clock time:
12-hour Clock 24-hour Clock
12:00 midnight 00:00 H
12:01 a.m. – 11:59 a.m. 00:01 H – 11:59 H
12:01 p.m. – 11:59 p.m. 12:01 H – 23:59 H

Example: Let us express the following time in 12-hour and 24-hour

clock format.
Time 12-hour 24-hour
1 Midnight 12:00 a.m. 00:00 H
2 Noon 12:00 p.m. 12:00 H
3 half past 6:00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 18:30 H
4 quarter before 4:00 a.m. 3:45 a.m. 03:45 H
5 25 to 2:00 p.m. 1:35 p.m. 13:35 H
6 18 past 5:00 H 5:18 a.m. 05:18 H
7 quarter after 7:30 p.m. 7:45 p.m. 19:45 H
8 25 to 4:25 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 16:00 H
9 5 to 11:00 a.m. 10:55 a.m. 10:55 H
10 quarter past 10:00 p.m. 10:15 p.m. 22:15 H

A. Convert the following into a 24-hour clock time:

1.) 8:14 p.m. 4.) 7:05 p.m.
2.) 9:13 a.m. 5.) 5:33 p.m.
3.) 4:24 a.m.

B. Convert the following according to what is being asked.

1.) 3 hours to 23:00 H, change it into 12-hour clock time.
2.) Half past 01:37 H, change it into 12-hour clock time.
3.) Quarter to 13:38 H, change it into 12-hour clock time.
4.) 5 minutes to 2:30 p.m., convert it into 24-hour clock time.
5.) Quarter past 1:13 a.m., convert it into 24-hour clock time.
Always remember that:

❖ A 12-hour clock format uses “a.m. and p.m.” that are placed beside the
numbers to denote whether the time is in the morning or afternoon.
❖ Ante Meridiem (a.m.) – is used after 12 midnight and before 12 noon.
- (12:01 a.m. – 11:59 a.m.)
❖ Post Meridiem (p.m.) – is used after 12 noon and before 12 midnight.
- (12:01 p.m. – 11:59 p.m.)
❖ A 24-hour clock format does not use a.m. and p.m. It uses H at the end
to indicate the use of 24-hour clock time. It starts at 00:00 H (12
midnight) up to 23:59 H, Then back to 00:00 H.

Analyze and complete the table.

Given 12-hour 24-hour
1 quarter after midnight
2 2 hours to 1:44 a.m.
3 half past 2 in the afternoon
4 quarter after 21:44 H
5 Half past 3:55 H

More practice. Complete the table.

What’s New

J.R. lives in Japan. His brother Allan lives in India. Their grandmother
lives in the Philippines and she wants to hear their calls at 10:30 a.m. in Japan
and Indian time. (Note: Japan is one hour ahead while India is three and an half
hours behind Philippine time.)
a. What time is J.R. going to call in the country he lives in?
b. What time is Allan going to call in the country he lives in?

What is It

Different times at different places in the world are caused by the

movement of the Earth, 15 degrees longitude every hour. Since there are 24
hours in a day, there are 24 standard time zones. (24 hours x 15⁰ = 360⁰). Time
zones are counted from Prime Meridian or at 0⁰ longitude and each time zone
1
is counted at 15⁰ intervals and extends 72 ⁰ to the left and right of a central
meridian.
Example 1: Let us look at the table below to see the relationship of time
in certain places to the time in our country. Note that (+) means ahead and (-)
means behind.
Difference from Example
Philippine Standard
Time (PST)
Manila, Philippines PST Thursday, 01:00 H
Auckland, New Zealand +5 Thursday, 6:00 H
Dubai, UAE -4 Wednesday, 21:00 H
Taipei, Taiwan same Thursday, 01:00 H
Hawaii, USA -18 Wednesday, 7:00 H
Cairo, Egypt -6 Wednesday, 19:00 H

Example 2: Philippines is 14 hours ahead of Arkansas. The flight from

Philippines to Arkansas takes 17 hours and 23 minutes. If the plane leaves
Philippines by 6:30 H of Tuesday, at what time in Arkansas will the plane
arrive?

1st Understand:
a.) What is asked in the problem?
-What time in Arkansas will the plane arrive? (Arkansas time)
b.) What are the given facts?
-Philippines is 14 hours ahead of Arkansas.
-The flight from Philippines to Arkansas takes 17 hours and 23 minutes.
- The plane leaves Philippines by 6:30 H of Tuesday.

2nd Plan:
Add 17 hours and 23 minutes from 6 hours and 30 minutes to get the
travel time. Then subtract by 17 hours and 23 minutes to get the arrival time in
Arkansas.

3rd Solve:
● Let’s come up with 6:30 a.m. or 6:30 H (Tuesday)
-To find out the time of travel, add the hours, 6 hours and 30 minutes
and 17 hours and 23 minutes.
-Add 6 hours and 17 hours, therefore 6 hours + 17 hours = 23 hours.
-Then add 30 minutes and 23 minutes, therefore 30 minutes + 23
minutes = 53 minutes.
● We now have 23:53 H of Tuesday or 11:53 p.m. of Tuesday in
Arkansas
● To get the time of arrival in Arkansas subtract 14 hours from 23 hours,
therefore 23 hours – 14 hours = 9 hours.
● We now have 09:53 H of Tuesday or 9:53 a.m. of Tuesday.
● Therefore, the plane will arrive at 9:53 a.m. of Tuesday in Arkansas.

4th Check:
Add 14 hours with 9 hours and 53 minutes. After getting the sum subtract it by
17 hours and 23 minutes. If the answer is 6 hours and 30 minutes, your answer
is correct.

A. Complete the table. Write the 12-hour clock time, and 24-hour clock time.

Country PST 12-hour 24-hour

clock time clock time

should she tell her sister to pick her up at the airport, assuming she needs an
extra half hour to deplane and pick up her bags?
Always remember that.
In finding the time of other countries, you must convert it in PST if it is in
a phrase form before converting it on other countries time. Analyze every
phrase if it is ahead or behind.
