Realistic Fiction
Realistic fiction is a made-up story
that could really happen. It has
characters, a setting, and events that
make up the beginning, middle, and
end of the story. Realistic fiction often
has a
theme, or big idea about life. To
determine the theme:
• as you read, stop at different points
and ask yourself what the story is
about so far.
• connect events to find out how they
are related.
• after reading, ask yourself what message the author wants you to learn.

The Neighbor’s Garden


1 Malik and his sister Kiara were playing outside.
2 “Hey, Malik, did you notice Mrs. Johnson’s garden?”
3 Malik went to the fence. “It’s full of weeds.”
4 Kiara said, “Mrs. Johnson used to have the best garden on
the block.”
5 “Dad said that Mrs. Johnson fell and hurt herself,” Malik said.
“I wonder if she can’t get around well enough to garden.”
