Lesson Plan 2: Introduction to Rhythm

 Topic: Basic Rhythmic Concepts (Beat, Steady Beat, Simple Patterns)

 Grade Level: 1-3

 Objectives:

o Students will be able to identify and maintain a steady beat.

o Students will be able to recognize and perform simple rhythmic patterns.

o Students will be able to differentiate between beat and rhythm.

 Materials: Percussion instruments (sticks, drums, shakers), body percussion (clapping,


tapping), visual representations of rhythms (lines, dots).

 Procedure:

1. Introduction (5 min): Define "beat" and demonstrate a steady beat.

2. Steady Beat Activities (15 min): Students practice keeping a steady beat through
clapping, tapping, and playing instruments along with music.

3. Rhythmic Pattern Exploration (15 min): Introduce simple rhythmic patterns (e.g.,
quarter notes and eighth notes represented visually). Students clap and play
these patterns.

4. Beat vs. Rhythm (5 min): Discuss the difference between the underlying beat
and the rhythmic patterns played over it.

 Assessment: Observation of students' ability to maintain a steady beat and perform


rhythmic patterns.

 Differentiation:

o Support: Provide one-on-one assistance and simplify rhythmic patterns.

o Challenge: Introduce more complex rhythmic patterns and have students create
their own.
