CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The family and the school are social institutions that have undergone many

changes over time, whether in terms of objectives, organizational structures, or even

interpersonal dynamics. The necessity to examine the dynamics between these two

important socialization institutions and the ensuing practical ramifications for the

community as well as the socio emotional and cognitive development of children and

young adults is motivated by the mutual influence between them this study according to

(Caridade 2015).

Parents have a significant impact on kids’ performance as well as the policies,

procedures, and learning environment of the school as members of the school community

As a result, schools serve as both a crucial social mirror that reflects societal changes and

a place where attempts can be made to control and discourage risky behavior, this study

according to Park et al,. (2017).

Extensive international research on the home-school collaboration shows that

parental involvement in school activities is a promising way to improve social

functioning, school staff members gain their talents via experience rather than formal

training, even though parental engagement is crucial. The significance of educators’

perspectives on student conduct, their approaches to handling it, and their potential to

effect, this study according to Nermeen et al,. (2010).

Morever, study of Gould (1999) entitled “Parents are stepping out of their passive

roles” found that parents are involved in four ways in which their children do better in

school. The first two involve parents acting as both teachers and volunteers at home,
while the other two involve parents becoming advocates for their children and decision-

makers in school regarding hiring, policy, and budget.

Furthermore, according to Hickman (1999) entitled “The Importance of Parent

Involvement Programs” cited research that focused on secondary school level. These

research findings provide seven types of parent involvement (a) Parent as communicator,

(b) Parent as supporter of activities, (c) Parent as learner, (d) Parent as advocate, (e)

Parent as decision maker, (f) Parent as counselor .

According to Child and Youth Welfare Code of the Philippines states that Every

child is susceptible and can be shaped to succeed in life or fail miserably, children are

among the most valuable resources in the country and that moral guidance and support

from parents or guardians is essential to advancing and improving the child’s life and

welfare. In the Philippines, parental involvement in education is a critical component that

has a big impact on children’ behavior and academic achievement.

According to Abdul’s (2016) study Parental involvement is generally low among

low-income Filipino parents, 3153 students from 29 public schools in the Philippines.

The study highlights the importance of home-based parental involvement opportunities

for low-income families to improve their children’s school outcomes. Factors like

academic merit, frequent meals, and internet skills increased parental involvement.

Morever the study entitled “ Educational Leadership for Parental Involvement an

Asian Context” Parental involvement in children’s education is influenced by family

background, but most parents can dedicate extra time and effort if encouraged. Effective

support and participation involve principal, teachers, and parents, this study from (Ho et

al,.2009).
Futhermore, Harris and Goodall (2007) entitled “Cultural and familial values

impact parental involvement in education” Filipino parents place a high priority on their

kids’ academic achievement. Aside, barriers such as financial constraints and

socioeconomic variables may impede the engagement of parents, emphasizing the

importance of cultural and familial principles in ensuring an improved future for their

children.

However, according to Nihat & Gürbüztürk (2013) entitled “Primary School

Students’ Parents’ Level of Involvement in to their Children’s Education”. Parental

involvement in the curriculum has a good impact on student attendance, academic

achievement, motivation, school attachment, responsibility, confidence, and discipline,

They add that success at school is guaranteed ifbschool-based instruction is supported by

parents' involvement at home.

According to the study of Blair (2014) entitled “ Parental involvement and

children’s educational performance” In spite of the fact that, Filipino guardians over all

social lesson levels regularly respect instruction asessential to their children’s victory and

are willing to go to incredible lengths to assist their children through school, maintenance

could be a major concern in Philippine school, as numerous under studies don’t proceed

past their basic grades in Comparative study of Filipino and U.S.

In connection to this, The Impact of Parental Involvement on Students Behavior ,

which means Students whose parents stay involved in school have better attendance and

behavior, get better grades, demonstrate better social skills and adapt better to school.

Parental involvement also more securely sets these students up to develop a lifelong love

of learning, which researchers say is key to long-term success.

Based on researcher’s observations when the students were not doing well in their

studies, what the teachers do to the parents of the students is that they talk to them

personally to make the parents understand the bad behavior of the students so that they

can focus more the parents in guiding the behavior of the students so that they can focus

more the parents in guiding the behavior of the students so that the behavior of the

students will be good. These circumstances gave light to the researchers to determine the

Impact of Parental Involvement on Students Behaviour that would serve as education

at Tagumbao National High School (TNHS).

Statement of the Problem

1.How may the participants be described in terms of:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Grade level and Section;

1.3 Number of family member;

1.4 Family Income?

2. What the perceived impact of parental involvement to the Student’s Behaviour in

terms of:

2.1 Parents as communicator;

2.2 Parents as supporter of activities;

2.3 Parent as decision maker;

2.4 Parent as counselor;

3. What are the effects of parents non-participation in Student’s Behavior

4.What is the implication of the impact of Parental Involvement on Studen’ts Behavior?

Significant of the Study

Thus study spread awareness in the community on the exposure of parental

involvement among junior and senior high school of students among Tagumbao High

School. Likewise, this research was valuable to the following beneficiaries:

To the Students, it would have a great contribution for them to know the things to do to

handle situation.

To the Parents, the study would be beneficial to know what to do to their children to

handle what are the things that should be considered in the process of parenting.

To the Teachers, the study would help them to deeply understand what their students are

going through inside their homes

through in life that is affected by their parents.

To the school head, typically refers to the principal or headmaster of a school.

The school head is the administrative leader responsible for overseeing the overall

functioning of the school, including academic programs, staff management, and student

discipline.

Scope and Delimitation

The goal of this study was to determine the different factors that are affecting the

parental involvement in students behaviour Tagumbao High School Students on the Face

to Face classes. The result of the study would determine the reasons why a student does

not perform well academically. However the researcher would like to give focus on the

issue to reduce the behaviour problems of Students, and the parental involvement.

The researchers conducted a survey to the following participants regarding the

different factors that is affecting the behavior of the students. The researchers will be

choosing participants to all the Junior and Senior High School Students of Tagumbao

National High School. The researchers chose this participants because they are more

knowledgeable or useful to answer the questions given by the researchers. One

participant from the Grade 7 Jasmine from 7 Daisy two participants, 7 Sampaguita two

participants, three from Grade 8 Da Vinci two from grade 8 Vangogh tree from grade 9

Jade and two from Ruby, three rom grade 10 Antares and one from 10 Altair, one

participant from 10 Sirius two from grade 11 Einstein and two from Tvl, one from 11

Tesla, tree from grade 12 Athena and one from Zeus, one from 12 Alphai. So five each

participants in grade 7,8,9,10,11 and 12 the overall numbers of the participants is thirthy

(30). Each of the participants would answer to the own made printed questionnaire given

by the researchers as a fulfillment on the research study for the School Year 2034-2024.

Review of Related Study and Literature

This chapter presents related literature, surveys, and studies reported by both

foreign and local authors. Published and unpublished documentation relevant to the study

is presented in this chapter to exemplify what is already known regarding this problem

and what needs further investigation. These materials serve as guidelines for the

researchers in pursuing the study.

Foreign Literature
According to Abdul Halim (2017) entitled “Early Childhood Educational and care

International” the term “parental involvement” describes a parent’s involvement in their

offspring’s education. Although some schools advocate family involvement, parents may

be concerned. Studies emphasize the significance of social and cultural elements,

together with parents’ goals, in shaping their children’s development. Schools need to

take cultural variations in parental engagement into consideration.

Also the article of Bruno Besbas et.al (2010) entitled “Parental Involvement in

School “ at every age, Children who do homework benefit from increased self-discipline,

increased motivation, and better family-school ties. Some schools are reluctant to

encourage parental involvement, while others do. Although parents actively participate in

their children’s education, other circumstances, such as living in an industrialized

country, have an impact on parental involvement .However, new state and local reforms

can help us better determine how much parental behavior affects their children’s

achievement.

Morever, According to Walberg’s (1984) research, academic achievement was

dramatically increased when parents limited their children’s television usage and

monitored their homework he went on to say that kids whose parents set limits on

watching television did better in math and reading. Also homework helps kids stay

motivated to learn, develops self-discipline, expands the school day, offers chances for

individual study, and improves the relationship between the family and the school.

Based on the tree reviewed literature the literature of Abdul Halim Masnan,

Bruno Besbas and Walberg’s there is positive effects of parental involvement in the

students behaviour to help them for better achievements and to have a positive behaviour.
In addition, these articles focusing the parental involvement it is most important for

encouraging students to do better behaviour among the students of Tagumbao National

High School (TNHS).

Local foreign

According to (Dr. Carpio, 2019), stated parents are their children’s first teachers,

inspiring and directing them toward becoming responsible adults. The High Standard of

Parents for the Children of the Mass (July 2017) states that parents have an obligation to

raise their children properly by giving them access to resources including food, shelter,

clothing, education, love, and direction. On the other hand, as this is viewed as a means

of preparing their children for problems in life, parents should also show that they do not

hold their children to high expectations.

According to Blair (2016) stated the high school dropout rate in the Philippines is

a concern as well, given the country’s high rates of poverty and educational deficits.

Although Filipino parents make a lot of effort to help their kids, retention is still a big

problem because many pupils drop out of school after the first few grades.

According to Dr. Carpio Giancarlo (2019) entitled “Parents Roles in the 21 st

Century Learning of School Students” stated parents have a responsibility of their

children because first of all they are the first teachers of their children and serve as their

motivation to their children. Furthermore, study of Blair(2016) Philippines is a

developing country with high rates of proverty and educational deficits also school

dropout rates are also high because of children and youth belong to proverty.
However, similarly between these two article of local literature Dr. Carpino

Giancarlo and Blair indicates importance of education for children and youth it also says

that the participation of parents is important for children because they are the ones who

teach their children what is good for them to have a good future and parents are willing to

work hard to meet the needs of their children.

Foreign Studies

According to the study of Kenny et.al,. (2004) entitled “Parental Involvement and

Adolescent Behavioral and Emotional Problems” Adolescent behavior is greatly

influenced by parental involvement, with greater parental involvement resulting in fewer

behavioral and emotional issues. Over time, children’s behavioral development

demonstrates this lasting effect.

However, according to Robinson et.,al,. (2009) entitled “Parental Involvement

and Adolescents’ Educational Success” regardless of socioeconomic background or prior

academic successes, also demonstrates a strong association between parental participation

and academic success, indicating that parental involvement is essential for fostering

positive student behavior relationship between parental involvement and educational

attainment. This suggests that parental engagement serves as a essential factor in

promoting positive student behavior and academic achievement across diverse

demographics.

Furthermore, according to Alvarez (2004) entitled “Parental Involvement and

Adolescent Behavioral and Emotional Problems” emphasizes the importance of parental

involvement in promoting positive student outcomes, emphasizing the need for

collaboration between parents, educational institutions, and communities. Highlighting

the importance of collaboration between parents and educational institutions to support

students’ holistic development. As such, fostering strong partnerships between parents,

schools, and communities is essential in promoting positive student behavior and

academic achievement.

Based on the three studies by Robinson (2009) and Maureen (2004) emphasize

the significance of parental participation on teenage behavior and academic achievement.

The aforementioned research underscore the need of cooperation among parents, schools,

and communities in fostering comprehensive student growth. Additionally, Alvarez

(2004) discovered that adolescents with behavioral and emotional issues are less likely

when their parents are more involved.

In similarly the study of Kenny Maureen, Robinson Keith and Alvarez Kathleen

they emphasize the enduring impact of parental engagement on shaping adolescent

behavior and academic success. In addition, highlighting the importance of collaboration

between parents and educational institutions to support students’ holistic development.

As such, fostering strong partnerships between parents, schools, and communities is

essential in promoting positive student behavior and academic achievement.

Local Studies

Study of Johnson and Lee’s (2017) entitled “meta-analysis conducted by Johnson

and Lee (2017) on 50 research revealed a positive relationship between student

accomplishment and parental participation. Higher grades and greater academic

performance were typically attained by students whose parents were more involved,

especially when it came to supervising homework and interacting with teachers.

However, according to Garcia and Smith (2018)) entitled “Parental involvement

and students motivation educational psychology” conducted Parental participation has a

favorable effect on students’ motivation and engagement in learning activities. In

Philippine high schools positive classroom behavior is encouraged and disruptive

behavior is decreased by active parental involvement and emotional support.

Hernandez and Mendoza (2019) conducted that parental engagement has a major

impact on students’ motivation in the Philippines. Students who have more involved

parents achieve academic goals and exhibit higher levels of motivation and were more

likely to set and achieve academic goals compared to students with less involved

parents.”cross-cultural study examined the role of parental involvement in student

success across different countries. The study found that parental involvement was a

consistent predictor of student achievement and that the benefits were similar across

diverse cultural contexts.”

Furthermore, according to the study of Johnson and Lee’s (2017) entitled “

Parental involvement in education which supports their children’s learning” they revealed

a significant positive correlation between parental involvement. Students whose parents

were more involved tended to have higher grades and better Academic performance.

Morever, the study of Garcia and Smith (2018) revealed they round that students whose

parent were actively involved in school activities and provided emotional support were

less likely to engage in disruptive behavior and mose likely to exhibit positive behaviour

in class. Furthermore, Hernandez and Mendoza (2019) the study found that parental
involvement was consisten prediction of students achievement and that the belief were

similar across diverse cultural contexts.

Based on the tree local studies Johnson and Lee’s, Garcia and Smith, and

Hernandez and Mendoza they shown as the parental involvement have a responsibility to

their children and more likely to exhibit positive behaviour class. However, this study

related to the present study regarding parental involvement in the students behaviour

among the students of Tagumbao National High School (TNHS).

Chapter 3

Research Method and Procedures

Research Design

The research was a qualitative which employed phenomenological design.

Qualitative and the researchers study the research as a form of broad understand about the

certain and specific field that need to be studied phenomenologial identifies the meaning

of the lived experience of individuals related toh specific phenomenon and then develops

a composite description of the phenomenon (cresswell,2007).

This study was caried out to determine the impact of parental involvement in

student behaviour.

Sampling Design

The student-researcher did a non-probability sampling, which was convenience

sampling design. Tagumbao National High School participants collection of data from

students who are conveniently available that can give the researchers the most right and

accurate answers to the questions. Student were chosen in the sections of grade

7,8,9,10,11 and 12, namely one participant from Grade 7 Jasmine from 7 Daisy three

participant, 7 Sampaguita one participant, from Grade 8 Da Vinci two from Grade 8

Vangogh tree from Grade 9 Jade and two from Ruby, Tree from Grade 10 Antares and

one from 10 Altair, one 7 from 10 Sirius two from Grade 11 Eintein and two from grade

11 Darwin one from 11 Tesla. Three from Grade 12 Athena and one from Zeus and one

from Aprodite of School Year 2023-2024.

Research Instrument

This study used the researcher’s own-made questionnaire that based on our

Statement of the Problem that we adopted about the research topic which entitled Impact

of Parental Involvement on Students Behavioural among the Junior and Senior High

School Students of Tagumbao National High School. There are 10 own made questions

for the participants, the first one (1) questions were from the Statement of the Problem

number one (2.1), the question number two (2) were from statement problem number

(2.2), the question number three (3) were from statement problem number (2.3), and the

question number four (4) were from the statement problem number (2.4), the question

number five(5) six (6) and seven (7) were from statement problem number (3), the

question number eight (8) were from statement problem number (4) . The questionnaires

were checked and validated by Ma’am Liezyl V. Ruba Practical Research 1 Adviser

(HUMSS Teachers).

Description of the Participants

The participants of our study were the selected students from One participant

from the Grade 7 Jasmine from 7 Daisy three participants, 7 Sampaguita one participant

from Grade 8 Da Vinci two from grade 8 Vangogh tree from grade 9 Jade tree

participants and two from Ruby, tree from grade 10 Antares and one from 10 Altair, one

participant from 10 Serious two from grade 11 Einstein and two from grade 11 Darwin ,

one from 11 Tesla, two from grade 12 Athena and two from Zeus and one participan in

grade 12 . So five each participants in grade 7,8,9,10,11 and 12 all in all the total of the

participants is thurthy, (30). The participants who are conveniently available because they
are willing to answer our questionnaires the Researchers believe that they have the

capacity to answer can provide the best answer that the students researchers could use to

come up with a proper conclusion, that's why the researchers applied the convenience

sampling design.

Data- Gathering Procedure

The researchers approached the students and requested their participation in the

study after receiving the principal’s approval on the permission letter to be followed. The

students agreed to participate in the research, and printed questionnaires were used to

administer the questionnaires. On April 08 2024, all the questionnaires were given out to

the participants. Data and questionnaires were then collected on April 19 2024. The

researchers then conducted an analysis and interpretation of the data collected. To get

more detailed and accurate responses to each of the study’s questions, the researchers will

ask participants follow-up questions.

2. What the perceived impact of parental involvement on student’s behaviour

in terms of:

2.1 Parents as communicator

Based on the findings, (9) participants answered “Yes’ they revealed that their

parents do communicate with them and help them with their homework or school

activities. This shows that these students feel like their parents talk to them and support

them with their school work. While the remajn, 15 out of 30 participants answered “No”

they shows that their parents do not communicate with them regularly about their

thoughts and school activities. This means these students feel like their parents don’t talk

to them much about what’s happening in their lives and school. The remaining (6)

participants stated that their parents communicate with them sometimes and help them

with their school activities. This group feels like their parents talk to them occasionally

and help them with their school work when needed.

Based on the overall results, most of the participants stated that parent do not

communicate with them regularly about their thoughts and school activities.According to

a study by Smith and Johnson (2018), when parents do not actively communicate with

their children about their thoughts and school activities, it can lead to feelings of neglect
and detachment in children. Regular communication between parents and children is

important for fostering a strong parent-child relationship.

2.2 Parents as supporter of activities;

Based on the findings, 18 out of 30 participants agreed they stated that their

parents support them in doing activities and help them when they are struggling. One (1)

participant stated, “Yes, when they see that I’m struggling, they will guide me to do my

homework.”

On the other hand, the remaining 12 participants di not agreed they stated that their

parents do not support them in doing activities or when they are struggling. One (1)

participant stated, “My parent is not helping me because they are busy with work.”

Based on the overall results, most of the participants stated that their parents are

support them in doing activities and help them when they are struggling. According to a

study by Fan and Chen (2017), parents’ support is crucial in helping children engage in

activities and overcome challenges. When parents actively support their children, they are

more likely to succeed and develop resilience in the face of difficulties.

2.3 Parents as decision maker;

Among the 30 participants, twenty five (25) participants agreed that their parents

help them to make a decision in a way that gives them advice in making their decission in

life and explaining that there are other ways or options everywhere one (1) of our

participants stated “my parents help me in making good decisions by giving me an

options, they are also reminding me the possible outcomes of my decisions”.While the
remaining five (5) participants answered “No” their parents do not help them in making

decisions instead they let their children choose based on what they like.

Based on the result, most of students of Tagumbao National High School that

their parents are helped in choosing or making their decisions towards the good future

they will be drawn to. According to the study of Elbaum et al. (2016), parents of kids

with developmental and intellectual disabilities frequently struggle with communication

and are resistant to their suggestions or requests for their education.

2.4 Parents as counselor;

Among the 30 participants, nine (9) out of 30 participants answered “Yes” it

revealed that they open their problems to their parents especially if they are struggling

solving their problems, their parents give their children advice for their problems on how

to start and solve the problems they have, three(3) of our participants stated “I think it is

the best option to open and talk to my parents whenever I have a problem because they

know better than me. They will surely give the right solution and advice in every problem

that i will encounter". While twenty one (21) out of 30 participants answered “No” they

shows some of the parents are too busy with their jobs and when they come home they

are tired and need to rest so they don’t have time to listen to their children’s problems,

five (5) of our participants stated that ,”I shy to talk about my problems in front of my

parents” so they will keep what problem they have and handle with their ownselves.

Based on the data revealed that most of them are their parents are not actively

involved in the problem of their children. According to Dr. Capio (2019), states that

parents have an obligation to raise their children properly by giving them access to
resources including food, shelter, clothing, education, love, and direction. On the other

hand, as this is viewed as a means of preparing their children for problems in life, parents

should also show that they do not hold their children to high expectations.

3.What are the effects of parents non-participation in Student’s Behaviour

Based on the findings 16 out of 30 participants stated that there are noticed

changes in their behavior because parents are not actively involved in their school life.

One (1) participant stated that “ Because sometimes I felt that they are not interested on

me or on what is happening with my life in school. When parents are not involved in

shaping their children’s behavior, kids might have trouble knowing what’s right and

wrong, and they might struggle more in school and with friends.

Based on the overall results, participants noticed that most of the students have a

changes in their behavior because parent are not actively involved in their school life.

According to a study by Hill and Tyson (2009), students often exhibit changes in

behavior when their parents are not actively involved in their school life. This lack of

parental involvement can lead to difficulties in academic and social settings.

4. What is your implication of the impact of parental involvement on

studen’s behavior?

Among the 30 participants, thirty (30) out of (30) agreed that parents who are

involved on behavior of students is important because they exposes that the parents

participation is very important to our society because the outcome of a childrens attitude,

behavior and manner is based on how the parents teached them, without the parents, the
children will definitely have a chaotic and emotional life. One (1) of our participants

shows “Parents participation in the behaviour of their children can make a huge impact.

Just by telling them to be honest at all times has a significant impact that they will bring

in the future, they will put it in their mind and heart. And with the children’s behaviour

they can influence one another”.

In addition ,one of our participants answered “Sometimes it’s good and bad,

because if your child does something bad and then you tolerate his/ her behavior, your

child will grow up with bad attitude, but if your child is doing good behavior, always

continue to teach them good behavior”.

Based on the data exposed that parental involvement there is a positive effects

that such as parents participation and efforts are needed to increase children’s self esteem

and manners, attitude of a parents reflects on their own children. According to the study

of Dr. Capio (2019), parents are their children’s first teachers, inspiring and directing

them toward becoming responsible adults.
