CREDIT UNIT: 3 CREDITS

A. Course descrip on

This course is design to introduce students to development and importance of Organic Chemistry;
homologous series; nomenclature, isola on and purifica on of organic compounds; periodic table and
periodicity; and qualita ve and quan ta ve analysis.

B. Course objec ve

A er comple ng the course, students should be able to

i) Understand the importance of organic Chemistry,

ii) Describe the periodic table and periodicity of elements,

iii) Iden fy and name organic compounds,

iv) Successfully compile and present oral and wri en assignments on specific topics related to
organic chemistry, individually or in groups.

C. Course procedure

The class will be spent in a teaching-dialogue manner, allowing for full and meaningful par cipa on by
students.

D. Materials/Equipment required

Board /flip chart, duster, markers, hand-out, power point projector and computer

E. Course requirement

Regular and punctuality is strictly required. Chea ng in any class exercise, assignment, test and
examina on is prohibited which may a ract an “F” grade and disciplinary ac ons. Class par cipa on is
mandatory; any absence without genuine excuse for more than five mes shall amount to either
withdraw from class or being disallowed to sit for final examina on. Each student is required to
contribute to group assignment as well as to undertake individual assignment.

F. Evalua on

A er each class, assignment will be given to assess the students understanding. A mid-semester test will
be administered and it shall form part of the total grade as well as the end of the semester examina on.
