Lesson Plan Mathematics

This lesson plan for 6th grade mathematics focuses on linear equations, aiming to help students recognize algebraic equations, differentiate between linear algebraic equations and expressions, and solve simple linear equations. Key concepts include the definition of algebraic equations, the distinction between expressions and equations, and step-by-step methods for solving linear equations. Activities include an equation sorting game and review questions, with homework tasks for further practice.

Lesson Plan: Linear Equations

Grade: 6
Subject: Mathematics
Duration: 40–45 minutes

SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes):

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Recognize algebraic equations.

2. Differentiate between linear algebraic equations and linear algebraic expressions
in one variable.
3. Solve simple linear equations in one variable.

Materials Required:
✅ For Teacher:

 Whiteboard and markers

 Flashcards with algebraic expressions and equations
 Number line (for visual demonstration)

✅ For Students:

 Notebooks and pencils

 Small whiteboards or math worksheets

Information (Key Concepts):

🔹 What is an Algebraic Equation?

 A mathematical statement that shows two expressions equal to each other using an
equal sign (=).
 Example: 2x + 3 = 7

🔹 Difference Between Algebraic Expressions and Equations:

Algebraic Expression Algebraic Equation

Does not have an equal sign ( = ) Has an equal sign ( = )
Example: 2x + 3 Example: 2x + 3 = 7

🔹 What is a Linear Equation in One Variable?

 An equation with only one variable (like x or y) and no exponents.

 Example: x + 5 = 10
🔹 How to Solve a Linear Equation?

 Step 1: Isolate the variable (keep x alone on one side).

 Step 2: Use inverse operations (addition/subtraction, multiplication/division).
 Step 3: Check your answer by substituting it back.

Example: Solve x + 4 = 10

 Subtract 4 from both sides → x = 6

Explanation (Teacher's Presentation):

1. Introduction with Real-Life Connection:
o Ask: "If you buy 2 candies and the total cost is $10, how much does one candy
cost?"
o Lead to the idea of solving for an unknown (x).
2. Explain the Difference Between Expressions & Equations:
o Write 2x + 3 and 2x + 3 = 7 on the board.
o Ask students: "Which one has an equal sign?"
o Explain how equations can be solved, but expressions cannot.
3. Demonstrate Solving Equations:
o Solve x – 5 = 12 step by step on the board.

Activity:
🎯 Equation Sorting Game:

1. Write different expressions and equations on flashcards.

2. Ask students to sort them into two groups: "Equations" and "Expressions".
3. Discuss their answers.

Assessment:
✅ Quick Review Questions:

 What is an algebraic equation?

 How is an equation different from an expression?
 Solve: 3x + 2 = 11
 Solve: 5x = 20

Homework:
📌 Task 1: Identify and circle the equations in a given list of algebraic statements.
📌 Task 2: Solve the following equations:

1. x + 7 = 15
2. 2x = 18
3. 3x – 4 = 11
