OR
Yash scored 40 marks in a test, getting 3 marks for each right answer and losing 1 mark
for each wrong answer. Had 4 marks been awarded for each correct answer and 2 marks
been deducted for each incorrect answer, then Yash would have scored 50 marks. How many
questions were there in the test?

1. (b) 2. (c) 3. (d) 4. (b) 5. (a)
6. (d) 7. (a) 8. (d) 9. (d) 10. (b)

Section – B
1. 2x + 3y = 11 ....(i)
2x – 4y = –24 ....(ii)
on subtracting (ii) from (i), we get
2x + 3y = 11
2x – 4y = – 24
– + +
7y = 35
\ y=5
Substituting y = 5 in eq. (i), we get x = –2
\ x = –2 and y = 5
Now, y = mx + 3
5 = m(–2) + 3
⇒ 2m = – 2
\ m = –1
5 1
2. + =2
x −1 y − 2
6 3
− =1
x −1 y − 2
1 1
Put = m and =n
x −1 y −2
Now, we have
5m + n = 2 ....(i)
6m – 3n = 1 ...(ii)
On solving (i) and (ii), we get
1 1
m= and n =
3 3
1 1
Now, = m and =n
x −1 y −2
⇒ x – 1 = 3 and y – 2 = 3
\ x = 4 and y = 5.
3. Let length be x units and breadth be y units.
\ Area = xy sq. units
Case 1 : (x – 5) (y + 3) = xy – 9
⇒ xy + 3x – 5y –15 = xy – 9
⇒ 3x – 5y = 6 ....(i)
[3]
Chapter End Test
Case 2 : (x + 3) (y + 2) = xy + 67
⇒ xy + 2x + 3y + 6 = xy + 67
⇒ 2x + 3y = 61 ....(ii)
On solving (i) and (ii), we get
x = 17 and y = 9
Hence, the length and breadth of the rectangle are 17 units and 9 units respectively.
OR
Let number of correct answers be x and incorrect answers be y.
Case 1 : 3x + (–1)y = 40 ⇒ 3x – y = 40 ...(i)
Case 2 : 4x + (–2)y = 50 ⇒ 4x – 2y = 50 ⇒ 2x – y = 25 ...(ii)
Solving (i) and (ii), we get
x = 15 and y = 5
Hence, number of questions in the test = x + y = 20.
