The Future Continuous tense is often used in English as a way to talk about
something happening at a given point in the future.

We use the Future Continuous Tense to talk about:

1. an activity that will occur in the future and continue for a certain period of
time:
• I'll be working late at the office tonight.
• We'll be flying over the Atlantic Ocean for three hours.
2. an activity that will continue over a period of time from now into the future :
• She'll be playing tennis until she gets tired.
• Susan will be waiting for the bus 10 more minutes.
3. a longer action in the future will be interrupted by a shorter action in the
future :
• I'll be making dinner when he arrives tonight
• She'll be playing the piano when her parents come home.
4. to talk about things that we expect to happen in the usual course of events :
• I will be seeing Ann tomorrow at the office. (we work together)
• We will be meeting Mike at the festival this weekend.
5. for predictions or expected trends in the future :
• By 2030, most people in Africa will be living in urban areas.

When we use the Future Continuous tense in speaking, we
often contract the subject and WILL:
I’ll be watching TV when she arrives.

He’ll be watching TV when she arrives.

We’ll be watching TV when she arrives.

Make positive future continuous sentences. Use contractions.


1. (at midnight/we/sleep)
2. (this time next week/we/sit at the beach)
3. (at night/I/watch the news)
4. (they/cram up/for our English test tonight)

6. (I think/they/fight/again)
7. (he/play/all afternoon)

For negative sentences we insert not between the auxiliary verb and the main verb.

In negative sentences, we may contract the auxiliary verb and "not":

• You won’t be waiting for her when her plane arrives tonight.
More examples:
• She won’t be studying at home this weekend

For question sentences, we exchange the subject and the auxiliary verb will.

Past perfect or past perfect continuous?
1. Sandra: Where is Tim going to meet us?
