Sling Angle Stress Formula

Load Angle Factor (LAF) is a number when multiplied by the weight of the
load, reveals the total stress imposed on sling legs when they are used to
form bridles.
Calculate the LAF, when the sling angle is unknown

• Measure the length of the sling and record this measurement as L (Length).
• Measure the vertical height from where the slings are attached to the crane hook or
sling ring, to the top of the load or to a horizontal projection of the load attachment point.
Record this measurement as H (vertical Height).10
• Divide the sling length (L) by the vertical Height (H). This is equal to the Load Angle
Factor or LAF. (LAF= L/H)

LAF= L/H

Sling Stress

Multiply the LAF times the Load Weight, this equals the Total Stress applied to the slings.
Divide by number of sling legs to determine stress or force applied to each sling leg.
Triple leg slings have 50% more capacity than double legs only if the center of gravity is in
the center of the connection point and the legs are adjusted to share the load equally.
Rigging a Quad leg sling so that all legs share the load equally is very difficult. Therefore,
when adjusting the working load limit of four leg chain slings, the number of legs in the
calculation must be 3 not 4.
Many riggers follow this model for quad leg slings of any material, relying on the fourth leg
for stability only.

Calculate the Sling Stress

• Sling Length = 10 Ft, and Height (from Center of Gravity to Hook Point) = 8 ft., weight
of load is 4.4 tons. (2- Leg bridle sling)

L = 10 ft.
H = 8 ft. Load wt. = 4.4 tons
LAF = 10 / 8 = 1.25
(Load Wt.) (LAF) / No. Of Sling Legs
(4.4) (1.25) / 2 = 5.5 / 2 = 2.75 tons per leg.

A. Load Weight = 12,000 lbs., Sling angle = 60%.

Smaller the Horizontal angle, the greater the stress

Note:

Never use less than a 45%.

As per API (Dynamic Lifts)

30% or LAF =2 for Static Lift

Center of Gravity

• Load should be rigged so the center of gravity is directly beneath the


hoist hook and if possible, below or level with the attachment points.

• Each leg of the sling should be strong enough to support the weight of
the entire load, just in case the load should slip.
