How to Work on Offense
3/27/20

I. Potpourri Style Intro

www.pickandpop.net

Sessions he’s liked -

● Luke Yaklich - Defense
● Jay Hernandez - Team Shooting Drills
● Doug Novak - Conceptual Offense
○ Point of Attack Video

Points of Emphasis -
● Learn Photoshop - Add value to yourself as an Assistant Coach
● Emphasize the Use of Film
● HoopMath.Com

Value of Film -
There is nothing you can do more to add value to players and your program than watching film and clipping
pieces of film.
● Practice Film - Can be monotonous, but is so valuable
● High School Coaches - SImply Set it Up on One End of the Floor
● “The Truth Machine” - this is what film becomes, what is REALLY happening

Value of Filtering -
“You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.” This is something that has been echoed by numerous
speakers this week.
● Coach used the “Diner Down the Street” vs “Specialized Restaurant” analogy
● Find what you are going to be good at

Value of Emotional Control - ** REALLY LIKE THIS

Coach really wanted to be more controlled emotionally during games. This was a goal of his going into this
season - to be able to give more clear headed feedback.
● Mentioned Coach Yak’s Clinic & 90/10 Principle (90% Information, 10% Emotion)
● Joe Madden “The Cubs Way” - Read his book and really liked it.
● BDAFF - “Don’t Be a Frickin Fan”
● Do Your Job - Be there to Help Your Players

Make Your Players Better Every Day -

● You have to get your players better every day.
● Practices can not just be tactical, you must include the player development piece
Book Recommendations:

Building Leaders” - Book Recommendations -

● ‘Above the Line’ - Urban Meyer
● ‘The Program’ (Lessons from Elite Military Units)

II. Ball Screen Talk

● Showed Video Clips of a “Whip Pass” (One Hand, Opposite Corner)

● Views this as a “Next Level” type Pass

Randy Bennett - Saint Mary’s

Talked to him about how they are trying to hit the roll man on every single Pick & Roll opportunity.
● IF he’s not open.... Hit the Man whose defender took him away

III. Favorite Practice Drills

** Really Like this One

Machiavelli Drill - (Maybe better out of Season than In-Season)
● Works Best with Either 16 or 8 Guys
● Start the Drill with a 4/4 Game to 11 (2’s & 3’s)
○ Whoever Wins - Moves On
○ Next Game is 2/2 - Whoever Wins, Moves On
○ Championship Game is 1/1

➔ Set Consequences for the Players that lose at each level. Way to Increase Competitiveness.
Two Minute Free Throw Game -
1. 6 Hoops - Competitive Free Throw Drill
2. Everyone Shoots a 1/1.....
3. If you have 2 Players that Miss the Front End in a Row.... Reset the Clock
4. GOAL is to finish the two minutes of Free Throws

Use of Mikan Drill -

Mikans are nothing innovative but when you look at film you see it in nearly every finish.
● Groups of ⅔
● One Guys does Mikans...... Other Guy in under the Hoop Doing Two Ball Dribbling
● IF THREE..... One Mikans, One Waits, One Dribbles.

➔ Mentioned Doug Novak’s Finishing System. www.coachdougnovak.com - I would recommend this as

well. We use it quite a bit.

1/1 Blind (Coach Called it “Butt Ball” ) -

● Ball Starts on the Defensive Player’s Back
● Offensive Player Decides when to go.
● Small Advantage Finishing

IV. Shot Spectrum

● Mentioned Dave Klatsky’s Podcast “Stat Chat” is the name of it. This is something that he got from
his podcast and they have adopted this as well.
Talked about the idea of “OK” Three Point
Shots..... Something to think about for High
School Coaches to think about is that the NBA
& College Numbers will be much higher than
their own Shooters in taking and making
threes.

He talked about them Turning Down “OK”

Threes and Attacking the Rim a Bit More.....
this really helped improve their efficiency.

Lennie Acuff.....Talking Offense:

1. Are You Playing Good Offense.... Or
2. Are You Just Shooting Well

Use the Shot Spectrum to understand what

the quality of your offensive possession look
like.

● Live Ball Turnovers are the “Rake of Life”.... They are harmful to Transition Defense as well.

V. Turnovers
● They use this to decide what needs to be worked on in practice. Each turnover either fits into the
decision making or Skill Categories.
○ Skills - These are things they can work on & improve
○ Decisions - these are more poor habits or flaws in decision making that need a different
approach

● Coach Boisvert is Open to sending anyone the chart that they use to track this with their players. Take
Advantage of this....

VI. 5/5 Play

Jeff Van Gunday Observing NCAA Practices -

● TALKING - He said in the NBA the players are doing the bulk of the talking. In college the GA’s, The
Coaches, etc are doing all the talking.

● 5/5 PLAY - Do not ignore 5/5 Play in practice. Van Gundy felt like there was too much 2/2 and 3/3 Play.

● OBSERVE - You can’t “Block Drill” everything. There just won’t be enough transfer for the players.
Take time to observe play and make decisions on what needs to be done later.

● ODO - We would call this HTB (Here, There, Back) These are three possession scrimmages.

More Drills for Practice.....

Baseball - 5/5 Play -

● There are 3 Innings to the Game
● You Must Get 3 Stops in Order for you to get on Offense
● Keep Score & Get a Winner

➔ First “At Bat” with 2 Outs has to start with a SLOB or BLOB

Points Per Possession (PPP) Game -

● 10 Possessions Total
● 5 on Offense, then 5 on Defense
● Calculate Your PPP
● Punishments
○ Losing Team Runs
○ If you had lower than 1.0 PPP your team runs too (or Double!)

Shot Spectrum Game -

● This will be a Shot Quality Game
● You Gets “Shot Quality Points (0-5) & the Point Total (2-3)
○ For Example (A Missed Wide open 3) = (5 + 0 = 5)
○ A Contested Mir Range is MAde (2 + 2 = 4)
● Each Team gets 10 possessions, and HIGH SCORE WINS

➔ Turnovers Really have value here..... Because they get 0 Points!

Philly 5/5 -
● Borrowed this from Brett Brown of the 76ers
● The game is to 2
● To Get a Point, You need to get a Score on 3/5 Possessions.
● If you do you get 1 Point.
● TRICK - If you get a turnover you’re session ends and the ball goes to the other team

➔ Another thing to really get guys to value turnovers and force them to coach each other.

Ball Screen Simulation -

● Got this from Travis Steele at Xavier
● 4 Offensive Lines
● Works best with All-Time Defenders (Coaches, Scout Team, etc)
● Defenders are playing about 80-90% on Defense
● DEFENSE - Executes whatever coverage they are going to see that upcoming game

➔ Slot to Wing DHO, 5 Man Sprints Up to Screen - Get a ton of reps vs this

4/4 Cut Throat -

● Credited Mike Budenholzer for this...

What is the Point of the Cones?

● The New Team that enters on Offense has to go
through the cones with the Basketball.

● Just to add some structure to the drill.
