The "era of the companions of Prophet Muhammad" refers to the lifetime of those who
personally knew and interacted with the Prophet Muhammad, generally considered to begin with
his death in 632 CE and end with the passing of the last companion, which is estimated around
110 AH (728 CE) when the last companion Abu al-Tufayl died. - (below an explanation is
mentioned about this sahabi) [Ai]
"Allah's Apostle said, 'The best of my followers are those living in my generation (i.e. my
contemporaries). and then those who will follow the latter" 'Imran added, "I do not remember
whether he mentioned two or three generations after his generation, then the Prophet added,
'There will come after you, people who will bear witness without being asked to do so, and will
be treacherous and untrustworthy, and they will vow and never fulfill their vows, and fatness will
appear among them." [3]
"Allah's Apostle said, "A time will come upon the people, when a group of people will wage a
holy war and it will be said, 'Is there amongst you anyone who has accompanied Allah's
Apostle?' They will say, 'Yes.' And so victory will be bestowed on them. Then a time will come
upon the people when a group of people will wage a holy war, and it will be said, "Is there
amongst you a none who has accompanied the companions of Allah's Apostle?' They will say,
'Yes.' And so victory will be bestowed on them. Then a time will come upon the people when a
group of people will wage a holy war, and it will be said, "Is there amongst you anyone who has
been in the company of the companions of the companions of Allah's Apostle ?' They will say,
'Yes.' And victory will be bestowed on them." [4]
The Sunni sect believed that the Prophet Muhammad promised paradise to ten of his
companions, including Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, and others.
Anas ibn Malik was the last living companion of Muhammad. He was a transmitter of Hadiths.
Malik ibn Anas compiled al-Muwatta', a collection of Sunni hadith and one of the earliest
surviving Muslim law-books. [Ai]
- Who was Abu al-Tufayl? below is the explanation of the companion - who was the last
companion.
The scholars are unanimous that the last companion to pass away is Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿĀmir ibn
Wāthilah (may Allah be pleased with him). He was born in the year of the battle of Uḥud in 3 AH
and was eight when the Prophet ﷺpassed away. Imam Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj (d. 261/875)
narrates that al-Jurayrī said to Abū al-Ṭufayl: “Did you see Allah’s messenger ”?ﷺHe said:
“Yes, he had a white handsome face.” Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj said, “Abū al-Ṭufayl passed away in
the year 100, and he was the last to pass away from the companions of the messenger of Allah
( ”ﷺṢaḥīḥ Muslim, 2340). He passed away in the blessed city of Makkah in 100 or 102 or 107
or 110 AH, according to the different opinions of scholars. The expert Ḥāfiẓ Shams al-Dīn
al-Dhahabī (d. 748/1348) gives preference to the view that he passed away in 110 AH.
It is worth noting that the passing away of the last companion in 110 AH demonstrates the truth
of the ḥadīth wherein the Prophet ﷺsaid during the last days of his life, “Do you realise [the
significance] of this night? For verily, after one hundred years from tonight, no one [currently
living] on the surface of earth will be living (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 116). [1]
The last female companion to have passed away appears to be Umm Khālid bint Khālid ibn
Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ ibn Umayyah ibn ʿAbd Shams. Her name is Amah although she is more
commonly kown by her teknonym. Imam Ibn Saʿd (d. 230/845), Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (d.
463/1071), Ḥāfiẓ Mizzī (d. 742/1341) and others have stated that she was born in Ḥabashah
(Ethiopia/Eritrea) where her parents had migrated to. She was a child in the era of the Prophet
ﷺas evidenced by her narration in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (5845) which states that the Prophet
ﷺonce dressed her with a garment with his own hands and thereafter commented in
Ethiopian, “beautiful”. Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī (d. 852/1449) mentions that she was granted
a long life so much so that she is the only companion of the Prophet ﷺwho Imam Mūsā ibn
ʿUqbah (d. 141/758-9) met. Further, Imam Bukhārī (d. 256/870) mentions, as transmitted in one
of the versions of his Ṣaḥīḥ, “No woman lived [as long] as she did.” This suggests that she was
the final female companion to pass away, although the year of her death appears to be
unknown.[2]
