2 Safety instructions

2.4 Electrical connection

When working on live devices, the applicable national accident preven-
tion regulations must be observed.
The electrical installation must be carried out in accordance with the
relevant regulations. The documentation contains additional instruc-
tions.
The terminal is powered using safety extra-low voltage (SELV) in
accordance with EN 60950-1. All requirements stipulated under stan-
dard EN 60950-1, especially relating to fire regulations, must be
adhered to.
This documentation contains instructions for installing the device (e.g.,
shielding, grounding, and laying lines) in line with EMC requirements.
Protective measures and protective devices must comply with the
applicable regulations.
Necessary protective measures: The device must be grounded.
→ Chapter 5.3‚ “Grounding Measures”, page 19

2.5 Operation
If the “Power” LED on the device goes out, it is not an indication that
the device is disconnected from the grid and de-energized.
Memory effect in TFT displays
When TFT technology is used in displays, the static screen content
may cause a shadow image to appear when the display is operating
continuously and the content does not change or only changes very
slightly.
This behavior is influenced by various conditions (e.g., ambient
temperature, switch-on/off behavior, number of screen changes) which
means that a precise time for the appearance of the shadow image
cannot be specified. The MControl® delays this effect by switching off
after 5 minutes if the touchscreen is not used.

2.6 ESD protection

ESD: Electrostatic discharge
ESDS module(s): Electrostatic discharge sensitive module(s)

ACHTUNG Destruction of the module due to electrostatic discharge!

● Observe ESD protection measures in accordance with EN 61340-5-
1, 2, and 3

Correctly installed ESDS modules are protected against ESD.

ESDS modules that are not installed are not protected against ESD by
the housing. When working with these ESDS modules (e.g., during
installation), ESD protection measures must be observed.

2 Safety instructions

2.7 Warranty conditions

The following instructions are part of the warranty conditions and it is
essential that they are observed.
For each device, despite our greatest efforts, there is still a residual
risk with regard to its availability. The user is responsible for carrying
out a comprehensive and precise assessment of the possible hazards
or damage resulting from possible errors – with regard to the safety
level required for each given case.

The manufacturer only guarantees the product features mentioned in

this document.

Only use the device under the ambient conditions specified. This also
applies to test and trial setups.

Messko GmbH assumes no liability for damages resulting from the

incorrect use of the MControl®. Messko GmbH especially assumes no
liability for damages resulting from inappropriate wiring or for damages
to the peripheral devices.

Housings, coverings, and other elements for protecting against contact

must be attached as intended and must not be removed. Plug connec-
tors that can be screwed on must be screwed on.
The MControl® contains no parts that can be substituted by the user.
Only modifications expressly described in this documentation may be
carried out on the modules. Carrying out unauthorized modifications
may cause the control system to behave in an unpredictable manner
and voids the warranty.
If the MESSKO® MControl® fails, it must be returned to the manu-
facturer for repairs.

Transport and store the MControl® in its original packaging.

The general occupational safety and accident prevention regulations

apply in addition to the safety instructions given in this document.

5.2 Network connection

The MControl® is preset and automatically connects to the main control

system when it is connected to it. For this to occur, the MControl® must
be connected in the same network as the main control system, e.g.,
MESSKO® MTeC® EPT303; there is no connection from an external
network via the MControl®. The main control system is preconfigured
on the ETH 2.1 port provided for this. You can find more detailed
information on this in the operating instructions for the main control
system (e.g., MESSKO® MTeC® EPT303).

5.4 Grounding measures

For the device to function correctly, grounding measures must be
carried out carefully and in accordance with the applicable regulations.
Low-resistance ground connections reduce the danger of an electric
shock in the event of a short circuit or defects in the system. Correctly
grounding and shielding of lines also reduces the effect of interference
on the system.

Messko GmbH BA4241521/00 EN MESSKO® MControl® Page 19/28

5 Installation and electrical connection

Function ground (FE)

Functional grounding is either potential equalization that is used to
discharge circulating currents coupled to shielding or an FE function in
system parts containing voltage that is not dangerous to humans. The
same applies to couplings on ground wires inside equipment. This
must also be discharged safely. The functional grounding does not
fulfill the purpose of a protective conductor!

5.5 Potential equalization

Potential differences leading to high compensating currents can occur
between separate parts of the system. For example, this can take
place via a line shield that is connected at both ends in cases where
parts of the system are grounded differently.
Different grid supplies, for example, cause potential differences.
Potential equalization line
Laying a potential equalization line reduces the potential differences,
which, as a result, ensures that the electronic components work
correctly.
● Reliable cross-section: 4 mm2
● Full-surface connection with the ground (protective conductor)
● The equalization line must be laid as near to the signal line as
possible

5.6 Lines

Lay power cables and control lines in separate cable ducts.

Supply voltage
We recommend a cable cross-section of 2.5 mm2 and a line length of
≤ 5 m. When stranded wires are used, the ends must be fitted with wire
end sleeves.
The dielectric strength of the connection cables used must be ≥ 300 V.
When the line length is shorter, lines with a cable cross-section of
≥ 1.5 mm2 can be used.
Copper lines with a temperature range of at least -25 °C to +80 °C must
be used as the connection cable.
Additional information:
→ Chapter 4.3‚ “Technical data”, page 12

Page 20/28 MESSKO® MControl® BA4241521/00 EN Messko GmbH

5 Installation and electrical connection

5.7 Signal line shielding

All lines apart from the supply voltage must be shielded.
Lines are shielded to reduce the effects of magnetic, electrical, and
electromagnetic interference.
Mode of operation
Interference currents on cable shields are conducted to ground via the
housing. It is especially important that the connection to the ground is
a good electrical conductor (low impedance) to prevent these
interference currents becoming the source of interference.
Suitable lines
Only use lines with braided shield (or braided shield and foil-type
shield).
Avoid lines that are only fitted with a foil-type shield because the foil
can easily become damaged when subjected to mechanical stress,
which reduces the shielding effect.
Grounding line shields
Connecting both ends of the shield line to the ground ensures good
interference suppression in the upper frequency range.
Connecting only one end of the line to the ground only achieves
suppression for low frequencies.
However, this can have positive effects if
● no potential equalization line is being used.
● foil-type shields are being used.

When there is a large physical separation, high compensating currents

can flow through the data line.
For this reason, suitable ground measures must be observed for the
entire system.

9 Transport, storage, unpacking

9 Transport, storage, unpacking

The following instructions for the transportation, storage, and correct
handling of the device must be observed.
Transport
Although the device has a robust design, the components installed are
sensitive to severe vibrations and impacts. The devices must therefore
be protected against high mechanical stress during transport.
The device must be shipped in its original product packaging and an
additional shipping carton. When shipping multiple devices in their
original packaging, they can be sent together in one shipping carton.
When transporting devices in cold weather or if the device is subjected
to extreme temperature fluctuations, ensure that no moisture forms on
or in the device (condensation). The device must be absolutely dry
before commissioning. For this reason, an acclimatization period of at
least two hours must be observed.
Storage
Climatic conditions as described in the Technical data chapter must
be observed.
→ Technical data, page 12 f.
Unpacking
Procedure:
1. Check packaging and content for visible transport damage.
→ Inform the transport company immediately if there is transport
damage.
2. Retain original packaging including packaging material.
Keep for future transport.
3. The documents provided must be kept.
They contain important information about working with the device.
