VIII. Read the conversation below carefully and then answer the questions which follow.

Susan and her mother, Mary, were jogging along a street one Monday evening.

Susan: Mum, look at that big dog over there. Shouldn’t we turn back?
Mum: No, just be careful and don’t bother it. It is a stray dog and should not harm you, if you
leave it alone.
Susan: Stray dog, Mum? So, does that mean that it does not have a collar or something?
Mum: Yes, and it does not have anyone to take care of it. All dogs in Barbados are supposed
to be licensed and kept off the streets by their owners. However, some owners leave their
dogs to roam.
Susan: That is just awful! Mum, what can we do about these stray dogs?
Mum: Well, when we see stray dogs, we can call the Animal Control Unit and they will come
to collect the dogs and take them to the pound. Fortunately, some of them are placed in
good homes.
Susan: That is great, Mum. But shouldn't we still try to reduce the number of stray dogs?
Mum: Of course! We can take care of our dogs and prevent them from having too many
unwanted puppies and encourage our friends to do the same.
Susan: Mum, I think I am going to do just that. Let’s walk faster; I want to call my friends.

IX. Read the passage below carefully and then answer the questions which follow.

Joy noticed that lately her father seemed to be worried whenever he looked into the mirror.
She would laugh and tell him that he needed exercise because he was gaining too much
weight. One day, he told her that he was going to the very first Get Moving Campaign which
was to be held at the Prime Minister’s residence. Joy said that she would like to join her
father and he agreed to take her.

When they arrived, Joy was amazed to see hundreds of adults and children taking part in
many activities. Joy and her father walked around and watched as the participants worked
up a sweat while doing the exercises. These ranged from traditional to modern forms of
exercise, dance and games. Joy was particularly attracted by the dance area and many
participants laughed heartily and appeared to be having a wonderful time. During the
course of the event, she took part in hop-scotch, skipping and the nature walk, while her
father enjoyed line dancing, aerobics and road tennis.

While exercising, Joy overheard one of the organizers explaining to a reporter the aim of the
campaign. He said they were highlighting the range of activities available to participants
and allowing them to become involved in those which they preferred. The organizer also
said that other activities would be incorporated in the future. Moreover, communities
across the island would be made responsible for the continuation of the programme,
instead of those persons who had introduced the campaign.

Joy looked forward to having some of these activities held in her community, especially for
her father who had really enjoyed himself and needed exercise.
