SECTION 1

Intergraph Smart® Electrical Options

Manager
Through Intergraph Smart® Electrical Options Manager, you can identify and specify the path to
symbols, drawings, templates, and reports for Smart Electrical. Also, you can define default
symbols and properties for items, default formats for data, and naming conventions that affect
new items of each type.
Options Manager controls the hierarchy of items in the software and controls the uniqueness of
data used throughout the life of a project. For example, you can define whether item names
need to be unique, and whether the uniqueness applies at the plant or unit level.
In Options Manager, you can customize:
▪ Formats
▪ Default data file locations
▪ Settings for parameters used in cable sizing
▪ Naming conventions
▪ Item types
▪ Plant default preferences for new and existing users
▪ Project-wide parameters (property values of item types)
Usually, an administrator sets these options at the beginning of a project. The administrator
seldom modifies these options except on occasions when project requirements dictate a
change.

Connect to a Plant Group

Before you can work with Options Manager, you need to connect to a plant group. A plant
group is a specific group available within a plant hierarchy, for example, Plant1, Area1,
Unit1. Plant, area and unit are examples of plant group types. The available plant group types
depend on the plant hierarchy you define in Engineering Manager.
You can open a plant structure and then connect to the required plant group. Also, if you have
appropriate access rights, you can connect to a plant group located on a different site
server. You can only connect to one plant group at a time.
1. Click File > Open Plant Group.
If the Open Plant Group command is not accessible, close all Options Manager
windows.
2. Do one of the following:

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 8

Intergraph Smart® Electrical Options Manager

▪ Expand the plant hierarchy and then select the required plant group located on the
lowest hierarchy level.
▪ Click Select Plant and then, under Available plant structures, select a plant to connect.
If you want to connect to a plant in a different database, in the Open Plant
Structure dialog box, click Site Server and from the Files of type list, select the required
.ini file.

Navigating in Options Manager

Options Manager is divided into the following main windows:
▪ Formats
▪ Locations
▪ General Settings
▪ Define Naming Conventions
▪ Item Types
▪ Project-Wide Parameters
▪ Plant Default Preferences
You can access the Options Manager windows using the Options menu commands or toolbar
icons.
Various commands on the Edit menu and on the main toolbar are available or not available
depending on the current selection in the main window.

For some cells in the Options Manager windows, an ellipsis button appears when you
select the cell. Clicking the button opens the appropriate dialog box that enables you to specify
the information required for that field. For instance, when specifying file locations in the
Locations window, the Browse for Folder dialog box might be displayed so that you can
choose the correct file more easily.
You can save changes to database definitions and close a session of Options Manager using
the File menu commands.

SECTION 2

Setting Formatting Options

The options available in the Formats window control the default formats associated with various
data types in the application database. Some examples of data types with units of measure
include electrical current, electric potential, power, length, angular velocity, integer and string.
Data formats associated with data types can control the length and type of specific kinds of
information for this project, such as text strings and numbers. Data formats also control the
units associated with particular properties and their display and accuracy in the Properties
window, property dialog boxes, EDE, and reports.
The formats assigned to these data types can change for different plants. You can use the
default data type formats, supplied with sets of properties, or you can create new formats with
the Format Manager.
If you select a meter format as the default format for lengths, properties defined with the Length
category of units appear in meter format units by default. If you selected feet or inches as the
default units for length, lengths appear in inches by default.
For each data type, the rows in the Format column contain a list of values. These
values correspond to the available formats created in the Format Manager per data type.

Define a Default Format

1. Do one of the following:
▪ Click Options > Formats.

▪ On the toolbar, click .

2. Click the cell in the Format column for the data type you want to define.
3. Select the default format for the data type in the list.

▪ The software uses a format defined in Options Manager only if the format for a specific
property belonging to the same data type is not defined in the Data Dictionary.
▪ The Format Manager defines the possible formats for each data type.
▪ When you select a default format in Options Manager, the data type appears in the selected
format in drawings.

SECTION 3

Defining File Locations

The correct operation of Smart Electrical requires that you specify various library, file, and path
names for reference data. The reference data determines where the software stores and finds
data. You must specify the locations of most of these libraries, files, and folders for your project
before you can begin using Smart Electrical.
You can modify default reference data settings for each project to customize projects and to
incorporate company standards into Smart Electrical. In Options Manager, you can define the
locations for each of the following default files: reports, templates, symbols for single line
diagrams, and drawing block files for schematics.
If you want the software to apply consistency rules created in Smart Electrical Rule Manager,
you must specify the rule library file location.

owner operator) in a disconnected mode, prior to importing the engineering data received from
an off-site plant, it is necessary to synchronize the reference data. You perform this
synchronization by exchanging reference data with the off-site plant. This is done by creating a
package file which you send to an off-site plant for import. The same procedure can also be
performed by the off-site plant administrator, who can create a package file and send it back so
that the reference data created by the off-site plant can be synchronized with the owner
operator.
When preparing a package file for a satellite or host, you can do the following:
▪ Connect to the source plant or project which contains the reference data that you want to
include in the package.
▪ Define the scope of the reference data that you want to include in the package. If a
reference item has been used in the current plant, the software marks this reference item as
mandatory and it is recommended that you include it in the package.
▪ Generate an Excel report that lists all the reference items that you have selected for the
package.
▪ Create a package file that you can send to an off-site pant where this package can be
opened, examined, and whose content can be imported into the target database.
▪ Open an existing package and change the selections if needed.
After receiving a package file from a host or satellite, you can do the following:
▪ View the reference items that have been included in the current package file.
▪ Specify which reference data you want to import from the package.
The software indicates whether a reference item is new or whether it already
exists in your project.
▪ Generate an Excel report that lists all the reference items that you have selected from the
package.
▪ Import the selected items into your database.
In the current software version, it is only possible to import new items.
Updating existing items will be possible at a later stage.

SECTION 7

Naming Conventions
You can assign an optional naming convention for each Smart Electrical item type. In Smart
Electrical, naming conventions consist of a number of segments, with each segment being a text
string or the value of a property of the item type. You define segments as protected segments
or allow users to modify the segments as needed. If you define a text segment as a protected
segment, you can use this segment as a separator. For further details, see Naming Convention
Example.
You can either define or copy a naming convention per item type - alternatively, you can copy
naming conventions for the entire plant group that you select. When copying naming
conventions, you can use a reference plant group as a source. Prior to defining or copying
naming conventions, you must select a target plant group, for example Plant1, Area1, Unit1, and
so forth. Source and target plant groups must belong to the same plant group type. For
example, if your target plant group is a unit, your source plant group must be a unit too.
Also, for item types that support multiple naming conventions, you can specify several naming
convention properties and assign a filter to each convention label (you need to access Filter
Manager to select or create filters). When working with multiple naming conventions, you need
to specify the order of priorities. When a user creates an item tag in Smart Electrical, the
software applies naming conventions in the specified order of priorities.
We recommend that you do not change a naming convention which is already in use. Naming
conventions do not apply to existing items. If you change an existing naming convention, the
software applies the new convention only to new item tags that users create in Smart
Electrical. This means that after you change a naming convention which was already used
when creating item tags, new item tags might be not unique in a plant group.
If you do need to change a naming convention which is in use, in Smart Electrical, for the
appropriate item tags, it is advisable that users change the Comply with Naming Conventions
flag to False and then switch it back to True. This way the software can update the names of
the existing item tags.
When opening Options Manager, you may see a message informing you that
changes were made to the plant group hierarchy names. These changes were made in . Smart
Engineering Manager To complete the name changes the Apply Naming Conventions
command must be run in Smart Electrical. This message continues to appear each time you
open Options Manager, until the Apply Naming Conventions command is run, or you select
the Don't remind me again of these changes check box.

Naming Conventions

Understanding Naming Convention Priorities

If multiple naming conventions exist for an item type, you can specify convention priorities. A
convention priority enables the software to apply a specific naming convention on creating a
new item tag belonging to the item type.
Convention priorities determine the order in which the software can apply multiple naming
conventions to new item tags. The software automatically assigns a priority number to each
new convention label that you create. The convention label created first receives the highest
priority (the highest priority number is 1). Each additional label receives a lower priority. You
can change the order of priorities at any stage of your plant life-cycle.
The following example describes how the software applies priorities when a user creates an
item tag in Smart Electrical. For the Cable item type, you can create a naming convention with
priority 1 (the highest) for power cables, for example, NC1, and also create another naming
convention with priority 2 for control cables, for example, NC2. Then you can assign to NC1 a
filter with the property Cable Category=Power and to NC2 a filter with the property Cable
Category=Control.
Depending on an item tag that the user creates in Smart Electrical, the software applies the
naming conventions as follows:
▪ When creating a power cable, the software first validates the filter conditions for the naming
convention NC1, which has the highest priority, and creates the new item tag using the
naming conventions defined for the NC1.
▪ When creating a control cable, the software first checks the filter conditions for the naming
convention NC1. Since the filter conditions do not fit control cables, the software applies
the filter conditions for the naming convention NC2, which has the lower priority, and creates
the new item tag using the naming conventions defined for the NC2. You can change the
order of priorities at any stage of your plant life-cycle.

Define a New Naming Convention

This procedure allows you to select a plant group and then define a naming convention for the
required item type.
1. Do one of the following:
▪ Click Options > Naming Conventions > Define.

▪ On the toolbar, click .

2. On the Define Naming Conventions dialog box, beside Plant group, click Browse.
3. Select a plant group.
4. From the Item type list, select the item type for which you want to define a naming
convention.
If the software allows you to define multiple naming conventions for the selected
item type, under Naming convention properties, make your definitions and assign a
filter. For details, see Define Properties for Multiple Naming Conventions.
5. In the Naming convention properties group box, click New.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 24

type, you can specify labels that designate cables with different functions: Power Cables,
Control Cables, Grounding Cables, and so forth.
7. To change the priority displayed under Priority number, click the Priorities button to set a
priority value that prioritizes the naming conventions if multiple naming conventions exist for
the same item type. The value under Priority number is displayed automatically.
8. Under Convention description, type a short description if needed,
9. To set a filter for the current convention (if needed), click Browse beside the Filter list. You
can select an existing filter or create a new one that will be assigned to the naming
convention label displayed under Convention.
10. To define a naming convention for parallel cables, select the Apply current naming
convention only to parallel cables check box. For details, see Define a Naming
Convention for Parallel Cables (on page 26).
11. To define a naming convention for cables in single-core cable assemblies, click the Apply
current naming convention only to cables belonging to single-core cable assemblies
check box. For details, see Define a Naming Convention for Cables in Single-Core Cable
Assemblies (on page 27).

15. Type values for the position of the starting character in the text or property name string, and
the required length of the string to appear in the tag.
16. To trim the empty spaces before and after a particular segment, select Yes from the Autofit
list. You can use this feature to accommodate varying segment lengths of dynamic
segments so that only the actual name values are shown without any spaces. Note that this
feature does not affect any text within a segment that contains spaces. It only trims the
spaces before and after segments.
Alternatively, you can click the Autofit All Segments button to change the Autofit
setting to Yes for all the segments in the current naming convention.
17. For additional segments, repeat the last three steps as required.

plant item tag that have been set as not protected.

Define a Naming Convention for Parallel Cables

1. Make all the definitions as described in steps 1-9 in the Define a New Naming Convention
(on page 24) procedure.
2. Select the Apply current naming convention to parallel cables only check box to define
a naming convention for parallel cables.
If you do not select this check box, parallel cables will not have any naming
conventions and the names of new parallel cables will comply with the definitions in the
General Settings window in Options Manager.
3. To determine the sequencing of cables within the parallel set, select an appropriate setting
in the General Settings window, under Parallel cable tag sequencing method:

Setting Description

Identical Sets the tag sequencing of the parallel cables to be identical in the group
and the cable uniqueness identifier is the parallel suffix. Examples:
Cable - 174/0A; Cable - 174/0B; Cable - 174/0C

Consecutive Sets the tag sequencing of the parallel cables to be consecutive and the
cable uniqueness identifier is the cable tag number. Examples:
Cable - 181/0A; Cable - 182/0B; Cable - 183/0C

Changing the parallel cable tag sequencing method does not affect the
tag sequencing of existing parallel cables.
4. Define the composition of the naming convention by selecting the appropriate naming
convention segments and their definitions in the Segment definitions grid. For details, see
steps 12-17 in the Define a New Naming Convention (on page 24) topic.
5. To determine whether to include the parallel cable suffix in the naming convention, select
the Parallel Cable Suffix property in the Segment definitions grid.

▪ To determine where in the cable tag name you want to include the parallel cable suffix,
define the parallel cable suffix in the Segment definitions section. You can move the
parallel cable suffix property up or down the list to set the position of this property in the
segment definition.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 26

Naming Conventions

▪ When renaming a parallel cable and a naming convention has been defined, you can

tag cannot be renamed. If no naming convention has been defined, all segments of the
item type can be renamed.

Define a Naming Convention for Cables in

Single-Core Cable Assemblies
1. Make all the definitions as described in steps 1-9 in the Define a New Naming Convention
(on page 24) procedure.
2. Select the Apply current naming convention only to cables belonging to single-core
cable assemblies check box to define a naming convention for cables in single-core cable
assemblies.
If you do not select this check box, cables in single-core cable assemblies
will not have any naming conventions and the names of new cables will comply with the
definitions in the General Settings window in Options Manager.
3. To determine the sequencing of cables within the assembly, select an appropriate setting in
the General Settings window > Tag sequence method for cables in in single-core cable
assemblies:

Setting Description

Identical Sets the tag sequencing of the cables in a single-core cable assembly to
be identical in the group and the cable uniqueness identifier is a number.
Examples:
Cable - 174-1; Cable - 174-2; Cable - 174-3

Consecutive Sets the tag sequencing of the cables in a single-core cable assembly to
be consecutive. This setting makes the names of the cables in the
assembly unique without the need of a uniqueness identifier. Examples:
Cable - 181; Cable - 182; Cable - 183

Changing the sequencing method of cables in single-core cable

assemblies does not affect the tag sequencing of existing cables.
4. Define the composition of the naming convention by selecting the appropriate naming
convention segments and their definitions in the Segment definitions grid. For details, see
steps 12-17 in the Define a New Naming Convention (on page 24) topic.
When renaming a cable in a single-core cable assembly and a naming convention
has been defined, you can rename all unprotected segments of the item tag. The protected
segments of the item tag cannot be renamed. If no naming convention has been defined, all
segments of the item type can be renamed.

Naming Convention Example

Item types can belong to only one plant group type, for example to the 'Unit' type. Therefore,
when you specify the target plant group and select to define naming conventions per item type,
the software filters the Item type list accordingly. For example, if you associated power
distribution boards with the plant group type 'Plant', the Power Distribution Board item type
only appears in the list of item types when your target plant group is a specific plant.
The following example illustrates a 16-character naming convention for cables:
▪ a prefix 'C'
▪ a separator '-'
▪ the cable specification
▪ a separator '/'
▪ a unique identifier
▪ a separator '/'
▪ a free text segment of up to 3 characters that has default value XYZ

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 32

Naming Conventions

For this naming convention, you should define the individual segments as shown:

▪ If you do not define a naming convention for an item type, the software assigns a default
naming convention to all the item tags belonging to this item type. The default naming
convention consists of an item type identifier and the item tag last sequence number. For
example, for a motor, the default naming convention is M-1. You define the item type
identifier and last sequence number values in the Item Types window.
▪ For reference items that appear in the Reference Data Explorer in Smart Electrical, the
software always uses the default naming conventions.

SECTION 8

Setting Item Type Properties

You can set default properties for each item type. For example, you can specify the default
symbol for a motor that the software uses when you generate a single line diagram. Other
properties include whether items of a particular type are required to have unique tags, and if so,
in what plant group type those items must be unique.
A plant group type is a level of plant hierarchy. The available plant group types
depend on the plant hierarchy you define in Engineering Manager. A plant group type can
contain several specific plant groups. For example, a 'Unit' plant group type can contain units
U1, U2, U3, and so forth.
You set the properties in the Item Types window. It is required that you assign the item type to
a plant group type prior to defining a naming convention for this item type.

Set Item Type Properties

1. Do one of the following:
▪ Click Options > Item Types.

▪ On the toolbar, click .

2. In the Item Types window, select an item type name for which you want to modify the
properties.
3. Under Value click to select a property that you want to modify.
▪ Prior to publishing, in Options Manager General Settings window, select
whether you want to publish plant items with or without the existing spaces in their item tag
names.
When publishing documents, the plant group type and uniqueness level set for publishable
item types must be the same as the settings for those item types in the retrieving tool.
▪ When the retrieving tool is Smart Instrumentation, the plant group type and uniqueness
level must be set to Unit for the following item types: Signal Runs, PDBs, Motors,
Heaters, Other Electrical Equipment, Instruments, and Circuits. Also, the plant group
type must be set to Plant for Cabinets (the uniqueness level setting is not important in
this case).
▪ In Smart P&ID, the plant group type and uniqueness level can be set to any level except
for the highest plant group type. It is recommended that the plant group type and
uniqueness level are set to Unit in Smart Electrical and Smart P&ID for Smart Electrical
publishable item types.
The plant group type of PDB internals (buses, circuits, cells, fuses, circuit breakers,
and so forth) is set automatically according to the plant group type of the PDB. If you need
to change the plant group type of a PDB internal, you must change the plant group type of
the PDB itself.

Setting Item Type Properties

1. Select Apply also for existing users to apply all the defined preferences for all new and
existing users.
2. Type or select the required value for the property.

3. Click , or click File > Save to save the changes to the database.
If you open more than one instance of the window and make changes for
several window instances, the software only applies changes in the window instance for which
you last saved the data, and not in any of the other currently open window
instances. Furthermore, the software discards any changes that you saved previously in other
window instances. For example, you can open one window instance for buses and another
instance for circuits. If you change a property value and save the changes in the window
instance opened for buses, the changes do not appear in the window instance opened for
circuits. If you now make a change in the window instance opened for circuits and save the
change, the software discards all the changes you made in the window instance opened for
buses.

SECTION 9

Defining Plant-Wide Parameters

Plant-wide parameters are parameters that you define for a specific plant group within a plant
(plant-wide, area-wide, unit-wide, and so forth). These parameters become default property
values of item types used in a specific plant group within a plant. A plant group is a specific
group available within a plant hierarchy, for example, Plant1, Area1, Unit1. Plant, area and unit
are examples of plant group types. The available plant group types depend on the plant
hierarchy you define in Smart Electrical.
You define parameters for a plant group after assigning item types to plant group types in the
Item Types window. The property values that you set become the default values that appear in
the Smart Electrical Properties window whenever users create new item types in the current
plant.
If you do not assign an item type to a plant group type, you cannot define default
values for the properties of this item type.
You can select a plant group and define its parameters in one of the following ways:
▪ You can select a specific item type and define values for the required item type properties.
▪ You can copy property values from item types of a source plant group to the specified plant
group.
When defining or copying property values, the software also dynamically updates the values of
the dependent properties. For example, if you change values of the Brake Power and Motor
Rated Power properties, the Demand Factor value is updated accordingly.

Plant-Wide Parameters Common Tasks

The following tasks are used frequently when you set parameters for a plant group.

Define Default Values for Properties

This option allows you to define default property values for item types in the required plant
group. In Smart Electrical, when users create a new item type, the item type default property
values appear automatically in the Properties window. For more information, see Define

Plant Operating Case Management

Plant Operating Case Management

Smart Electrical allows you to perform bus and PDB load summaries based on various sets of
load values. These various sets of load data (referred here to as plant operating cases)
provide the ability to analyze the total electrical load consumption of your plant based on
different load properties and values. Typically, such operating cases are called Winter,
Summer, and so on. You can create and define any number of such operating cases to cover
your plant requirements.
Plant operating case management allows you to do the following:
▪ Create and define any number of plant operating cases. (Performed in Options Manager)
▪ Set one of the existing operating cases as the active case. This is the operating case that
the plant is currently switched to. The active case can be any one of the existing operating
cases in the plant. After switching to a specific operating case, you can then calculate
various load summaries for that operating case (performed in Smart Electrical).
▪ Set one of the existing operating cases as the governing case. This is the main operating
case that the plant works at most of the time during the design and engineering stage and
later during the operational and maintenance stages of the plant.
▪ For each operating case, define and store in the database the values of the electrical
equipment and buses. in your plant (Performed in Smart Electrical)
▪ Generate various load summary reports for the active operating case (performed in Smart
Electrical).
Smart Electrical is shipped with a single (base) operating case, which you can
rename if needed. All the values and definitions are stored for this case until you switch to
another operating case that you create for your plant. Once you add another operating case and
define it as the active case, you can delete the base operating case if you no longer need it.

The following restrictions apply regarding the governing case in your plant:
▪ Publishing is possible only if the governing case is set as the active case of your plant.
▪ Retrieved data is moved to the governing case only.
▪ When populating data from the Reference Electrical Engineer using a source plant, the
software takes the governing case data of the source plant to populate the governing case
of the target plant.

apply:
▪ Publishing — The software allows you to publish and retrieve load data only for the
governing case. Also, the governing case must be set as the active case in your plant.
However, if you want to publish the data of another operating case, you must define it as the
governing case and set it to be the active case in your plant. Later, after publishing, you can
switch back to your previous definitions of governing and active cases.
▪ Retrieving — When retrieving data, the software always inserts the retrieved data into the
operating case defined as governing.

SECTION 11

Defining Item Type Symbology

Symbology provides graphical clarity to a drawing by differentiating among various items by their
appearance. Symbology refers to the color, line width, shape, and style associated with items.
You can use line widths, styles, shapes, and color to differentiate among the different types of
drawing items, such as cables, power distribution boards (PDB), equipment, and so forth. For
example, you can define symbology that differentiates between associated graphical elements
and the unassociated ones (auxiliary graphics and symbols) in composite drawings and
conventional CBDs. Also, you can, for example, define a power cable that connects to a PDB as
being a black, 2-mm thick continuous line, where as a control cable could be a blue, 1-mm thick,
broken line.
Along with the default symbols supplied with the software, you can create your own symbols that
can be associated with a document and item type. You create symbols in the Catalog
Manager. For more details, see the Catalog Manager User's Guide > Working with Symbols >
Creating Symbols.

Importing and Deleting Linear Styles and Patterns

You can import new linear styles and patterns to use in various ways in symbology and delete
styles and patterns that you do not use.
Linear styles and patterns are imported from symbol files. When you import a style or pattern,
point styles referenced by that file are also imported. In order to assign a newly imported style
or pattern in the Symbology table or heat tracing style in the Tracing table, you must close
Smart Electrical Options Manager and re-open it.
You can also delete styles and patterns from the lists of available styles and patterns. However,
if a style or pattern is in use in Smart Electrical Options Manager, it cannot be deleted.
New linear styles and patterns are created using the Line Style Editor, which is an add-on to
Smart Electrical Catalog Manager. Style resource documents can be any .igr document, .spp,
or .rsc line style file that contains styles native to that document. The projectstyles.spp file
contains the default symbology. Using Catalog Manager, you can add projectstyles.spp as a
resource. When you open a new symbol file using the Line Style Editor, all styles are
listed. Styles appearing in bold are currently available to you. You can modify any symbol file
that appears (including styles that do not display in bold) and you must save the symbol
file. For more details on the Line Style Editor, see Using the Smart Line Style Editor
Using the Smart Electrical Options Manager, you can then import the symbol file.

▪ If you import a new pattern or style that has the same name as a pattern or style that is
already listed on the Linear Patterns dialog box, the new information immediately overwrites
the older pattern or style.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 44

Defining Item Type Symbology

▪ As soon as you import linear patterns or styles, the new information is immediately written
into the project styles file. There is no option to save the changes later.
You can also import linear styles, which incorporate linear patterns, for heat tracing
symbology. The words heat trace must appear in the name of the style in order for Smart
Electrical Options Manager to import the style.

▪ The plant group hierarchy levels of the source pant group and the target plant group must
be the same. For example, if the selected source plant group level is unit, the target plant
group level must also be unit. This is true for both options in the Source group box.
▪ When copying naming conventions, the software overwrites naming conventions that exist
in the target plant group item.
▪ If the source plant group hierarchy item that you selected does not contain any naming
conventions, the naming conventions in the target will remain unchanged.

Define Naming Conventions Window

In this window, you can define a naming convention for each item type that is in use in Smart
Electrical. Also, for item types that support multiple naming conventions, you can define several
naming conventions.
Plant group — Displays the target plant group for which the naming convention applies. A
plant group is a specific group available within a plant hierarchy, for example, Plant1, Area1,
Unit1. Plant, area and unit are examples of plant group types. The available plant group types
depend on the plant hierarchy you define in Engineering Manager. Clicking Browse beside the
Plant group box opens the Select Plant Group dialog box, where you can select the target
group for defining naming convention.
Item type — Allows you to select the item type for which you define a naming convention, for
example, motor, starter, cable, and so forth. The availability of item types in the list depends on
the plant group type to which you assigned the item types in the Item Types window.

required plant group and item type as a source for copying a naming convention.
Copy from reference data — Allows you to copy a naming convention to the current item type
using the naming convention defined for this item type in a reference plant group. After you
select this check box and click Copy From, you can select as a source a reference plant group
only.

Naming convention properties

Allows you to define multiple naming convention properties that you want to assign to the item
type displayed in the Item type box. Multiple naming convention properties consist of a
convention label, convention description, and priority number. For each convention label
assigned to the item type, you can assign a filter and set segment definitions.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 53

Windows and Dialog Boxes

The options under Naming convention properties are only available for item
types that support multiple naming conventions, for example, the Cable item type.
Convention — Allows you to do the following:
▪ For a new naming convention, type an appropriate naming convention label.
▪ For an existing naming convention, type or select a naming convention label which you
assigned to the item type selected from the Item type list.
A label can be any name that can designate an actual item type category. For
example, for the Cable item type, you can specify labels that designate cables with different
functions: Power Cables, Control Cables, Grounding Cables, and so forth.
Priority number — For a new naming convention, allows you to type a priority value that will
prioritize the naming conventions if multiple naming conventions exist for the same item type.
For existing naming conventions, displays the priority number of the current convention. The
software associates a priority number automatically with the label displayed under Convention.
You can change the convention priority in the Set Convention Priorities dialog box.
Convention description — Allows you to type a description for the label displayed under
Convention.
New — Adds an empty row in the Convention list, where you can type a new naming
convention label.
Delete — Deletes the entire naming convention: the currently displayed label and description,
and the corresponding segment definitions. Also, the software dissociates the convention from
the priority number and automatically promotes the priority numbers assigned to the conventions
with lower priorities.
Priorities — Enables you to change the order of priority numbers assigned to the labels
available in the Convention list.
Filter — Displays a filter that you want to assign to the naming convention label displayed under
Convention. Clicking Browse beside the Filter box opens the Select Filter dialog box, where
you can select an existing filter or create a new filter.
Browse — Opens the Select Filter dialog box, where you can select an existing filter or create
a new filter.
Clear Filter — Clears the filter assigned to the naming convention label displayed under
Convention.
Apply current naming convention only to parallel cables — Instructs the software to create
a naming convention for parallel cables by applying the current settings only to parallel cables. If
you do not select this check box, parallel cables will not have a naming convention. For details,
see Define a Naming Convention for Parallel Cables (on page 26).

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 54

Windows and Dialog Boxes

Apply current naming convention only to cables belonging to single-core cable

assemblies — Instructs the software to create a naming convention for cables in single-core
cable assemblies by applying the current settings only to cables belonging to single-core cable
assemblies. If you do not select this check box, cables in single-core cable assemblies will not
have a naming convention. Note that you can also select the Apply current naming
convention only to parallel cables check in addition to the Apply current naming
convention only to cables belonging to single-core cable assemblies check box if you need
a naming convention for parallel cables within single-core cable assemblies. For details, see
Define a Naming Convention for Cables in Single-Core Cable Assemblies (on page 27).

▪ For an item type with multiple naming conventions, Smart Electrical filters the naming
conventions automatically, depending on your filter settings, and creates an item tag
according to the naming convention to which the filter is assigned.
▪ If you do not assign any filter, Smart Electrical can only create a new item tag using
segment definitions specified for the label that you created first.
Sample of item tag naming convention — Displays a dynamic preview of the naming
convention using your definitions for each segment.

Segment definitions
Displays the characteristics and definitions of each segment in the naming convention. Each
row of the table represents the definition of a single segment. The options under Segment
definitions are available after clicking Define naming conventions per item type.
In Smart Electrical, each item type has a tag property Comply with Naming
Convention, which determines the behavior of an item tag name. When the property is set to
True, the protection masks and segment properties behave according to the item naming
convention settings. When the property is set to False, you can edit the tag name value for the
item freely. Whether you set this property to True or False, the software ensures compliance
with uniqueness if you select the Is unique property in the Item Types window.
Segment Type — Indicates whether the segment is text, a property, or a hierarchy type. The
selection you make affects what you can do in the Property/Text column.
Property/Text — Allows you to type default text if the segment type is Text, to select a property
appropriate to the item type if the segment type is Property, or to select the section of the
hierarchy to be used in the naming convention. When you use a property as the segment type,
the software updates the segment data dynamically if you change the value of the property.
Apart from the properties that also appear in the Properties window for item tags in Smart
Electrical, there are properties that only appear in the Naming Conventions window. The
following table lists and describes these properties.

Property Description

Designates the name of the cableway which the cableway

segment is associated with. For example, if the name of
Cableway.Item Tag
the cableway is EW-1, the cableway segment name can
be EW-1-100.

Windows and Dialog Boxes

When the selected Segment Type is Hierarchy Type, in the Property/Text column, the
software displays a list of possible selections that you can choose for use in the naming
convention. These selections are based on the hierarchy template which is defined for the
current plant. You can select any plant group level name to be part of the naming convention.
You make your selection starting with the plant group level name of the selected item type and
up to the highest plant group level. For example, defining a naming convention for a motor which
is defined on a Unit plant group type level in a Plant-Area-Unit structure, allows you to select any
name of the plant groups starting with Unit and up to the highest level. Furthermore, you can
select Unit code if the selected item type is defined as the Unit plant group type.
The property name is taken from the Display Name field in Data Dictionary. This name
is not unique but is associated with its own unique Data Dictionary name. If two property
display names are identical in the Property/Text field, the software displays the unique Data
Dictionary name in parenthesis after the display name, to differentiate between the two names.
Protect — Determines whether a text segment is protected, in which case the user cannot
change the values in the segment. All segments are protected by default.
Protection is useful to prevent the user from overwriting the segments. Protect the
segments that contain fixed text or text that you want to use as separators. All property
segments are protected by default.
Start — Specifies the position of the character in the property name that appears at the start of
the segment.
Length — Specifies the length of the string starting from the value you specify in the Start
column. For the Text segment type, the maximum length is 99 characters. For the Property
segment type, the maximum length depends on the property definition in the Data Dictionary.
Autofit — Select Yes to trim the empty spaces before and after the current segment. Select No
to keep existing empty spaces before and after the current segment. You can use this feature to
accommodate varying segment lengths of dynamic segments so that only the actual name
values are shown without any spaces. Note that this feature does not affect any text within a
segment that contains spaces. It only trims the spaces before and after segments.
Autofit All Segments — Sets the Autofit option to Yes for all the segments in the current
naming convention.
Delete — Deletes the selected segment from the naming convention.
Up — Moves the selected segment one position up relative to the previous segment.
Down — Moves the selected segment one position down relative to the following segment.

Manage Plant Operating Cases Dialog Box

Name — Allows you to type a name of the new operating case
Description — Allows you to type a brief description of the new operating case.
Governing case — Allows you to set the new operating case as the governing case for your
plant.
If you select this check box, the governing case function will be applied to
the new operating case. The software will automatically remove this function from the
operating case that was previously set as the governing case of the plant. This is so
because there can be only one governing operating case at all times. For more
information, see Plant Operating Case Management.

Edit Plant Operating Case Dialog Box

This dialog box allows you to edit the name and description of an existing plant operating case.
Also, it allows you to set the current operating case as the governing case for your plant.
Name — Allows you to type a name of the operating case
Description — Allows you to type a brief description of the operating case.
Governing case — Allows you to set current operating case as the governing case set for your
plant.
When editing a governing case, you cannot clear this check box. This is
so because there must be a governing operating case at all times. Therefore, to apply the
governing case function to another operating case, edit the properties of the required case
and select the Governing case check box. The software will remove the governing case
function from that operating case and clear its Governing case check box automatically.
For more information, see Plant Operating Case Management.

General Settings Window

In the General Settings window, you define various default settings that become general
default settings for all Smart Electrical users in the current plant. Smart Electrical users cannot
change these settings.

Maximum number of parallel cables

Determines the maximum number of parallel cables that the software allows when performing
sizing. If parallel cables are required for cable sizing and the calculated number of parallel
cables exceeds the maximum, the software displays an appropriate message, and the sizing
does not continue.

Setting Description

Allows you to enter a value for the maximum number of parallel cables in
Numeric value
the range of 1 to 99.

Minimum cross-section of parallel cables

Determines the minimum conductor cross-section of parallel cables, with appropriate units, that
the software looks for when performing sizing. If parallel cables are required for cable sizing,
the software performs the search for appropriate cables among reference cables with a
cross-section of at least the value specified, even if cables of smaller cross-section also meet
the requirement.

Setting Description

Numeric value with Allows you to select a different value for the minimum cross-section
unit of measure of parallel cables.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 65

Windows and Dialog Boxes

When you select a setting for the minimum conductor cross-section of parallel cables,
a reference cable with that exact conductor cross-section must exist in Smart Electrical for the
software to be able to use parallel cables when sizing. If no such cable can be found, the
software uses a reference cable that has at least the indicated cross-section size.

Naming method for parallel cable suffix

Determines whether the software adds a numeric or an alphabetical suffix to parallel cable
names.

Setting Description

Allows you to apply a numeric method when creating or duplicating parallel

cables. For example, if you mark the cable C-U1-1-21 as a parallel cable, the
software adds a back slash and the suffix 1, so that the cable name is as follows:
1,2,3...
C-U1-1-21/1. If you create another parallel cable with the same connection points,
the software increments the suffix by one digit, so that the new cable name is as
follows: C-U1-1-21/2.

Allows you to apply an alphabetical method when creating or duplicating parallel

cables. For example, if you mark the cable C-U1-1-21 as a parallel cable, the
software adds a back slash and the suffix A, so that the cable name is as follows:
A,B,C...
C-U1-1-21/A. If you create another parallel cable with the same connection
points, the software increments the suffix by one letter of the English alphabet, so
that the new cable name is as follows: C-U1-1-21/B.

▪ When defining naming conventions for parallel cables, you can determine where in the cable
tag name you want to include the parallel cable suffix. In Options Manager, on the Define
Naming Conventions dialog box (Options > Naming Conventions > Define), define the
parallel cable suffix in the Segment definitions section. You can move the parallel cable
suffix property up or down the list to set the position of this property in the segment
definition. If you do not select this check box, the suffix for the parallel cables will appear at
the end of the cable tag name.
▪ Changing the suffix method for existing parallel cables does not replace the existing suffix
but rather concatenates the old and new suffixes when resizing the cables.

Parallel cable suffix input mask

Sets the length of the suffix in the parallel cable naming convention.

Setting Description

0 Denotes a character position in the parallel cable name suffix mask. For example if
000 is entered in the Parallel Cable Input Suffix field and 1,2,3 is selected in the
naming method, then the suffix for the first cable appears as 001, the second 002
and so forth. You can have up to 10 characters in the suffix.

# Denotes a space is to be used instead of a character in that position. For example,

using our example above and using the string 0#0, the first cable appears as 0 1,
the second as 0 2 and so forth.

Item Types Window

Enables you to define properties that affect the behavior and default graphical elements of each
item type in use in Smart Electrical. It is possible to open several instances of the Item Types
window and tile them vertically or horizontally. This way you can conveniently view and
manage properties of related item types.
If you open more than one instance of the window and make changes for several
window instances, the software only applies changes in the window instance for which you last
saved the data, and not in any of the other currently open window instances. Furthermore, the
software discards any changes that you saved previously in other window instances. For
example, you can open one window instance for buses and another instance for circuits. If you
change a property value and save the changes in the window instance opened for buses, the
changes do not appear in the window instance opened for circuits. If you now make a change
in the window instance opened for circuits and save the change, the software discards all the
changes you made in the window instance opened for buses.
Item Type — Allows you to select the item type for which you define the properties.

Property and Value

Contains item type properties and enables to specify a value for each property. You use item
type properties when defining naming conventions.
Plant group type — Specifies the plant group type to which the software assigns the item
type. For example, if you assign Plant as the highest plant group type for motors, whenever
you create a motor in Smart Electrical, it will belong to the entire plant. If you intend to register
your plant with SmartPlant Foundation, you must make sure that you assign the appropriate
item types to the same plant group type as in the tool you want to interface using SmartPlant
Foundation. For example, in Smart Instrumentation, cabinets and panels are always assigned
to the highest plant group type.

▪ A plant group type is a level of plant hierarchy. The available plant group types depend on
the plant hierarchy you define in Engineering Manager.
▪ After assigning an item type to a plant group type, you can define a naming convention for
this item type in the Define Naming Conventions window and define default property
values in the Project-Wide Parameters window.
▪ Smart Electrical displays items from all the units in a specified plant.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 82

Windows and Dialog Boxes

▪ When you specify a plant group type for the Power Distribution Board (PDB) item type, the
software automatically assigns all PDB internals such as buses, circuits, cells, fuses, circuit
breakers, and so forth, to the same plant group type. You can only change the plant group
type of PDB internals by changing the plant group type of the PDB itself. Other item types
that inherit their plant group type from their parent item are, transformer components and
circuit internals.
▪ Metering equipment, even when part of PDB internals, have their own plant group type and
do not inherit the plant group type from the PDB.
Item type uniqueness level — Defines the plant group type in which the item type tag must be
unique per plant group. This command applies only if you set the Is unique option to Yes. For
example, if you select Unit as the uniqueness level, then in a unit where you create the tag for
the item type, this tag name must be unique. In other units in the same plant, you can use the
same tag.
The available levels depend either on the plant group types or on the parent item
types. For details, see the Uniqueness Level (see "Uniqueness Level Table" on page 83) table.
Default block — Indicates the drawing block file name that the software uses as the default
symbol for typical schematic blocks.
Is unique — Indicates that the item type must be unique in a plant group that belongs to the
plant group type you specify under Item type uniqueness level.
Item type identifier — Specifies a default prefix that the software uses in the item tag when you
do not define a naming convention for the item type. The software uses the item name by
default as the identifier.
Last created sequence number — Specifies a starting sequence number that the software
applies to a new item. The software automatically increments this number by one each time
you create a new item of the specified item type. The software also uses this sequence number
in the item tag when you do not define a naming convention for the item type to enable
uniqueness validation.
We recommend that you do not make the value of the next sequence number lower
than the current value, to avoid the possibility of the software creating duplicate item tags.

Windows and Dialog Boxes

General (Plant Default Preferences Window)

The following table lists and describes the options for general preferences. You can set these
options as default in the Plant Default Preferences window.

Software behavior after creating or duplicating an item

This option allows you to define a default preference for software response after creating or
duplicating an item in Smart Electrical. The selected setting also applies when creating a new
item in the Electrical Index by dragging a reference item from the Reference Data Explorer.
Open dialog box after creating or duplicating an item — The following options are available:
▪ None — Displays a created or duplicated item in the Electrical Index or the Reference
Data Explorer without opening either the Item Tag or Common Properties dialog box, with
default values that you define in the Project-Wide Parameters window and default name
that fits the item naming convention.
▪ Common Properties — Opens the Common Properties dialog box for the created or
duplicated item, where users can enter the required electrical properties.
▪ Item Tag — Opens the Item Tag dialog box, where users can rename the item tag. The
text can either be free text or a mask that fits the item naming convention.
When selecting the Common Properties value, if the user creates a new item that
does not have a common properties form, the software behaves as if you selected the None
value.

Electrical Engineer display options

These options allow you to display in the Electrical Engineer the names of associated PDB item
tags and panel item tags as part of the names of buses, incomers, bus risers, panel circuits, and
auxiliary contacts.
Display PDB and panel item tags with associated items in Electrical Engineer — The
following options are available:
▪ Yes — In the Electrical Engineer, displays the names of associated PDB item tags and
panel item tags as part of the names of buses, incomers, bus risers, panel circuits, and
auxiliary contacts.
For example, MCC 200 / Bus A or JB-7/CKT-35.
▪ No — In the Electrical Engineer, does not display the names of associated PDB item tags
and panel item tags as part of the names of buses, incomers, bus risers, panel circuits, and
auxiliary contacts.

Log file options

Allows you to set preferences for generation of various error log files. Error log files hold records
of errors that occur during various operations. The software automatically records errors in the
log file whenever it displays an error message referencing the appropriate log file. When an
error occurs in a single operation, the software displays an error message immediately. For a
batch operation, the software displays an error message on completing the batch operation
process.
Activate log file generation — The following options are available:

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 88

Windows and Dialog Boxes

▪ Yes — Enables error log file generation options.

▪ No — Disables error log file generation options.

▪ Setting the preference to No only affects the recording of errors in log files; it does not
prevent the software from displaying error messages.
▪ If an error is caused by a violation of engineering rules, the software does not display any
error message and therefore does not write any records to the relevant log file.

SLD Generation (Plant Default Preferences Window)

The following table lists and describes the options for the single line diagram (SLD) generation
preferences. You can set these options as default in the Plant Default Preferences window.

SLD margins
Allow you to define the default unit of measure for SLD margins and distance between the page
edges and the SLD drawing so that the drawing does not overlap the title block. The unit of
measure for top, bottom, left and right margins changes dynamically, according to the
preference for margin units.

Distance for SLD internals

These options allow you to set the default distance between buses, circuits and circuit internals
in a generated SLD.
The following options are available:
▪ Distance between buses — Allows you to type a value for the horizontal distance between
the buses. Select a unit of measure.
▪ Distance between circuits — Allows you to type a value for the horizontal distance
between the circuits above and below the buses. Select a unit of measure.
▪ Distance between circuit internals — Allows you to type a value for the vertical distance
between the circuit internal components (fuses, starters, and so forth). Select a unit of
measure.
▪ Vertical distance between electrical items — Allows you to define the vertical distance
between electrical items in your SLD drawings. This setting applies to all electrical items in a
branch except for circuit internals. Type in the required value and select the unit of measure.
This option becomes available after selecting the Recalculate saved item position check
box.

Drawing options
Allow you to set general preferences for SLD generation.
Save settings of last generated drawing — The following options are available:
▪ Yes — Saves and then applies all the settings that users define on the Single Line
Diagram Options dialog box (SLD margins and Distance for SLD internals). This
preference takes effect after generating an SLD and applies to all subsequent SLD
generations in the current Smart Electrical session.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 89

Windows and Dialog Boxes

▪ No — For subsequent generations in the current Smart Electrical session, saves only the
SLD margin preferences and returns all the other SLD options to the application defaults.
After moving electrical items in a generated drawing, moving and resizing the
frames that the software draws around items belonging to PDBs and around circuits in each cell,
the software always retains the position of all electrical items in saved drawings without the need
to instruct the software to do so.
Use bus tie symbols — The following options are available:
▪ Yes — Shows a horizontal representation between two connected buses using the
BusTie.sym file. In this case, the software shows the connection between the two buses as
a straight bus-tie connection without showing the items connected between and within the
circuits. The BusTie symbol is a "circuit" type symbol and has its first connection point on
the rightmost side and the second connection point at the leftmost side.
▪ No — Shows a vertical representation of a connection between two buses. This is the
standard bus coupler-riser circuit connection representation that includes both coupler and
the riser circuits and displays them as vertical objects, connected to each other. The
software displays both circuits as standard arrows.

Load Summaries and Reports (Plant Default Preferences

Window)

Naming convention properties

The options under Naming convention properties are only available for item types that
support multiple naming conventions, for example, the Cable item type. Multiple naming
convention properties consist of a convention label, convention description, and priority
number. For each convention label assigned to the item type, you can assign a filter and set
segment definitions.
Convention — Contains a list of naming convention labels that you assigned to the item type
selected from the Item type list. A label can be any name or can designate an actual item type
category. For example, for the Cable item type, you can specify labels that designate cables

row of the table represents the definition of a single segment.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Options Manager User's Guide 95

Windows and Dialog Boxes

In Smart Electrical, each item type has a tag property Comply with Naming
Convention, which determines the behavior of an item tag name. When the property is set to
True, the protection masks and segment properties behave according to the item naming
convention settings. When the property is set to False, you can edit the tag name value for the
item freely. Whether you set this property to True or False, the software ensures compliance
with uniqueness if you select the Is unique property in the Item Types window.
Segment Type — Indicates whether the segment is text or a property.
Property/Text — Displays default text if the segment type is Text or displays a property
appropriate to the item type if the segment type is Property.
Protect — Shows whether a text segment is protected, in which case the user cannot change
the values in the segment. All segments are protected by default.
Protection is useful to prevent the user from overwriting the segments. Protect the
segments that contain fixed text or text that you want to use as separators. All property
segments are protected by default.
Start — Shows the position of the character in the property name that appears at the start of the
segment.
Length — Shows the length of the string starting from the value you specify in the Start
column. For the Text segment type, the maximum length is 99 characters. For the Property
segment type, the maximum length depends on the property definition in the Data Dictionary.

Define Item Type Symbology Window

The settings in this window apply to both conventional and composite drawings.
Item Type — Allows you to select the item type that you want to define the symbology
parameters for.
Drawing Type — Allows you to select the type of drawing where the symbol will be used.
Item Type Filter — Click in an empty cell to open the Select Filter dialog box. The Select
Filter dialog allows you to select a filter that will narrow down the selected item type to the
specific item type properties with which the symbol will be used. You can select, modify, or
create a new filter in the Select Filter dialog box. For more details, see Select Filter Dialog Box
(on page 94).

Drawing Type Filter — Click in an empty cell to open the Select Filter dialog box. The Select
Filter dialog allows you to select a filter that will narrow down the selected drawing type to a
specific drawing type where the symbol will be used. You can select, modify, or create a new
filter in the Select Filter dialog box. For more details, see Select Filter Dialog Box (on page 94).

Symbol File — Click Browse to open the symbol folder and select the required symbol.
Initial Style — Displays a list of available style names. The style sets the color, weight, and
pattern of the symbol as defined in the Catalog Manager. For more details, see the Using the
Smart Line Style Editor topic in the Catalog Manager Help.
Color — Displays the color associated with the chosen style. Clicking on the color opens a list
where you can change the style color. Changing the color does not affect the default settings
for the chosen symbol, it only affects the symbol for the item type and document type selected.
Width — Displays the line width associated with the chosen style. Clicking on the line width
opens a list where you can change the line width. Changing the line width does not affect the
default settings for the chosen symbol, it only affects the symbol for the item type and document
type selected.
Pattern — Displays the line pattern associated with the chosen style. Clicking on the line
pattern opens a list where you can change the line pattern. Changing the line pattern does not
affect the default settings for the chosen symbol, it only affects the symbol for the item type and
document type selected.
Move Up — Moves the selected row one row higher, making the priority of the selected item
type higher (the top row has the highest priority.) The priority rules are set by the filter. The
priority determines which rule applies first when rules conflict with each other. For example,
Filter A is the first row. The filter's rules state to use a red broken line to represent cables that
are between 2 to 10 cm in diameter. Filter B is below Filter A in the Define Item Type
Symbology window and its rules state to use a blue continuous line when the cable is between
8 to 20 cm in diameter. If a cable is 9 cm in diameter the software assigns the cable the symbol
that has the higher priority, in this case a red broken line.
Move Down — Moves the selected row one row lower, making the priority of the selected item
type lower.
