What is social and emotional development?


1. Social and emotional development is the change over time in children’s ability to
react to and interact with their social environment.
2. Social and emotional development means how children start to understand who
they are, what they are feeling, and what to expect when interacting with others.
3. Social and emotional development is important since this development influences
a child’s self-confidence, empathy, the ability to develop meaningful and lasting
friendships and partnerships, and a sense of importance and value to those
around him or her.
4. Social and emotional development is a very important aspect of child
development. It involves how children learn to understand and express their own
feelings, as well as how they interact with others. Social and emotional skills are
essential for forming healthy relationships, coping with challenges, and
succeeding in school and life.
5. Social and emotional development is influenced by many factors, such as
genetics, temperament, family, culture, peers, and life experiences. It is also
shaped by the interactions that children have with their caregivers and other
adults who model and teach them social and emotional skills. Therefore, it is
important to provide children with a supportive and nurturing environment that
fosters their social and emotional growth.

 Social and emotional development starts early. Young children develop their
emotional skills in their first five years as they form relationships with family.
 Social and emotional development must be first in the five since when we come
out and live in this world we have the first emotion.
 We have 5 major emotions. Joy, Sad, Fearful, Disgusted and angry. All of these
emotions develop as the child grows older.
