Part B

• Title of micro project :- automobile workshop and

observe the various sensor s used in car. Also
prepare report of the same i.e. is name, use,
location, function etc.

• Rationale :- There are a lot of sensors used in

modern-day automobiles that help in the proper
functioning of the vehicle, reducing emissions,
increasing efficiency as well as improve the safety of
the vehicle

• Aim of micro project :- Visit automobile workshop

and observe the various sensor s used in car. Also
prepare report of the same i.e. is name, use,
location, function etc.
• Course outcomes Achieved :-
1. Developed ability to Identify the different type
displacement measuring sensors
2. Developed ability to Use relevant sensors for
mechanical measurements.

6
• Literature review :- Human life is dynamic. One of
the great invention for the modern world is vehicle
undoubtedly. KarlKarl Benz who patented the three
wheeled motor car in 1886. The recent research
about the transportation says that the main medium
of travelling through the world is car and there are
more than 900 million of passenger cars moving on
the track throughout the world (World Bank,
2014).The purpose of my project is to build up a car
which can move with any driver. It just need a
command from the user and then it will start moving
towards the destination. This modem technology has
two different parts. One of them is hardware and
another is software part. I have researched about my
project and I found some equipment that I need to
build up my vehicle. Some of them are LIDAR,
Radars, GPS (Global Positioning System), Sensors and
Radars. Radar sensors and ultrasonic sensors will
work as the sense of the vehicle and provide a
remarkable amount of information in the range
of 750 MB/s (Shankland, 2013), which is more
than a human driver could ever attain.

7
• Actual methodology follows :-
1. First of all select the micro project topic
2. Discuss with teacher about Micro-Projects topic
3. Visit automobile work shop in Beed city
4. Then observe the different type of sensors
5. Make a report 0n Micro-Project

8
• Out put of micro project :-
Automobile sensors are intelligent sensors which can be
used to control and process the pressure of oil,
temperature, level of emission, coolant levels, etc. There
are different types of sensors used in automobiles,

9
PROJECT

10
• Different types of sensors observed in
automobile
1. Mass airflow sensor
2. Engine Speed Sensor
3. Oxygen Sensor
4. Spark Knock Sensor
5. Coolant Sensor
6. Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAF) Sensor
7. Fuel Temperature Sensor
8. Voltage sensor
9. Camshaft Position Sensor

11
• Mass Air Flow Sensor
Function :- To determine the Mass flow rate of the air
entering the I.C engine such that proper air-fuel ratio can
be maintained.
Location :- The MAF sensor is situated between the air
filter and the throttle body.
Use :- The mass airflow sensor also commonly known as
the MAF sensor is a type of sensor used in cars to
calculate the amount of air that enters the I.C engine
during the intake stroke

12
• Oxygen Sensor
Function :- The Oxygen sensor is used to measure the
amount of oxygen present in the exhaust gas.
Location :- The Oxygen sensor is located between the
engine and the catalytic converter in the exhaust
manifold.
Use:- The Oxygen sensor is used to measure the amount
of oxygen that comes out of the engine and then reports
it to the ECU (Engine control unit). If the sensor senses
more amount of oxygen it means that the mixture is rich
whereas if less oxygen is detected then it would mean
that the mixture is lean.

13
• Spark Knock Sensor
Function :-The function of the Knock sensor is to pick up
the vibrations and sound coming from the engine and
convert them into electrical signals.
Location :- The Knock sensor is attached directly to the
outside of the engine block. However, in some instances,
one can find the sensor beneath the intake manifold.
Use :- The spark knock sensor is used to ensure whether
the fuel is burning smoothly, otherwise, it will cause an
unexpected ignition.

14
• Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor
Function :- The function of the Manifold absolute
pressure sensor is to sense the pressure of the intake
air and then accordingly decide the air-fuel proportions
to be sent to the engine.
Location :- The Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor is
located on the intake manifold of the engine
use :- The Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor or the
MAP sensor is a device situated in the intake manifold
and is used to calculate the pressure of air going to the
engine. The higher the pressure, the higher will be the
mass of air and hence more fuel can be used.

15
• Vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
Function :-As the name suggests, the vehicle speed
sensor is used to measure the speed of the
transmission output shaft or the vehicle wheel and
send it to the ECU.
Location :- The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is located
near the transmission’s output shaft.
Use:-The vehicle speed sensor helps the Engine
control unit in a number of ways by telling the real-
time speed of the vehicle. The data provided by the
VSS is also used by driver assistance systems such as
ABS, TCS, ESP or ACC, motor control units to determine
the wheel speed.

16
• Skill developed / learning out comes :-
1 Identify the different type displacement measuring
sensors.
2 Identify the different types of force measuring
sensors

• Applications of micro project :-

1. Automation in automobile is increased

2. Operational efficiency of vehicle is enhanced.
