ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY
CHANDANA SREEKUMAR
WHAT IS EEG ?
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a technique used to
measure and record the electrical activity of the brain.
It works by placing electrodes on the scalp, which detect
electrical signals generated by the brain's neurons.
These signals, known as brain waves, are recorded as
patterns that provide insights into brain function.
Brain's electrical activity has been studied since the late
1800s.
Hans Berger (1929) developed the first modern tracing
of brain waves, identifying alpha waves (10 Hz)
prominent when the eyes are closed.
By the 1930s, EEG patterns were linked to conditions like
sleep, epilepsy, coma, and brain infections.

APPLICATIONS OF EEG
CLINICAL APPLICATIONS RESEARCH APPLICATION
Neurological Disorders: Event-Related Potentials
Detects abnormal brain (ERPs): Measures brain

sleep abnormalities, and to stimuli.
