PAST SIMPLE e PAST CONTINUOUS

O past simple úsase para expresar accións e situacións do pasado.

A forma do pasado simple dos verbos regulares faise engadindo -ed.

We had dinner at 8:30 last night.

Ceamos ás 20:30 onte.

call → called stay → stayed

o Os verbos irregulares teñen cada un a súa forma en pasado e hainos que aprender.

go → went fly → flew write → wrote

o As expresións temporais que utilizamos co past simple fan referencia ao pasado:

last month (o mes pasado), four days ago (fai catro días)

O past continuous fórmase co verbo be (was / were)+ verbo en –ing.


Usamos o past continuous para expresar accións que estaban ocorrendo nun momento concreto
do pasado.

I was doing homework yesterday at 5.

Estaba facendo os deberes onte ás 17.


o Podemos atopalos frecuentemente na mesma frase.

The girl was speaking on the phone when her mum came home.

A rapaza estaba falando por teléfono cando súa nai chegou á casa.

o Co past continuous, describimos unha acción prolongada no tempo.

The girl was speaking on the phone

o Co past simple expresamos unha acción curta que interrompe a acción prolongada.

when her mum came home.

o Utilizamos when (cando) diante do past simple e while (mentres) diante do past continuous.
