Unit: Simple Past Tense

Overview

The Simple Past Tense is used to describe actions that have already happened in the past. It is
typically formed by adding -ed to regular verbs, while irregular verbs have unique forms.

1. Using Regular Verbs

Positive Form

• Structure: Subject + past form of the verb (add -ed for regular verbs)
• Example:
• I walked to the store.
• She studied for the exam.

Negative Form

• Structure: Subject + did not (didn't) + base form of the verb


• Example:
• I did not (didn't) walk to the store.
• She did not (didn't) study for the exam.

Yes/No Questions

• Structure: Did + subject + base form of the verb?


• Example:
• Did you walk to the store?
• Did she study for the exam?

WH-Questions

• Structure: WH-question word + did + subject + base form of the verb?


• Example:
• When did you walk to the store?
• What did she study for the exam?
2. Using Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs do not follow the standard rules for forming the past tense. Each irregular
verb has its own unique past form.

Positive Form

• Structure: Subject + past form of the irregular verb


• Example:
• I went to the store.
• She saw the movie.

Negative Form

• Structure: Subject + did not (didn't) + base form of the irregular verb
• Example:
• I did not (didn't) go to the store.
• She did not (didn't) see the movie.

Yes/No Questions

• Structure: Did + subject + base form of the irregular verb?


• Example:
• Did you go to the store?
• Did she see the movie?

WH-Questions

• Structure: WH-question word + did + subject + base form of the irregular verb?
• Example:

• What did she see at the cinema?
