Graphing Quadratic Functions

English Learner Instructional Strategy

Vocabulary Support: Activate Prior Knowledge
Before the lesson, draw or project images on the board to review lines of symmetry. Begin
with basic figures with lines of symmetry that are simple to find, such as a heart, square, circle,
or equilateral triangle. Discuss with the class what makes two parts symmetrical by asking
these questions.
• What does a line of symmetry do?
• How do you know that a figure has a line of symmetry?
• Is it possible to have more than one line of symmetry? Can you prove it?
Connect their review of symmetry and symmetrical lines to the symmetry associated with
parabolas in this lesson.

Discussion Supports
As students talk about the questions, have them pay attention to each other’s understandings
in order to increase their fluency in mathematical discussions about parabolas. Restate
statements they make as a question to seek clarification and provide vocabulary or grammar
prompts for students who need more guidance.

Multicultural Teacher Tip

This lesson is rich in vocabulary. Tell students to refer to their journals if they get
confused. Additionally, encourage students to make a list of words that they see
in the lesson that they do not remember, and allow them time to review those
words as they begin independent practice. Circulate and look for common terms
among students that would be beneficial to review in small groups.
