Systems of Linear and Quadratic Equations
You have learned that, a system of equations is a set of
equations involving the same variables and the point(s) where
the graphs of the equations intersect are the solutions. You
have solved systems of linear equations. You can also solve
systems involving nonlinear equations.

Use substitution to solve the system of equations.
y = x 2  - x, y = 2x
 x 2 - x = 2x  Use the first equation. Substitute
2x for y.
 x 2 - 3x = 0 Solve the remaining equation.
x(x - 3) = 0 Factor.
x = 0 or x - 3 = 0 Zero Product Property
x = 0 x=3 Simplify.
Substitute the two values of x into one of the original
equations.
If x = 0 and y = 2x, then y = 0.
If x = 3 and y = 2x, then y = 6.
The solutions are (0, 0) and (3, 6).

Graphing Solutions to Systems of Equations
A graphing calculator can be very effective in solving systems
of equations.

EXAMPLE Solve Systems by Technolology

Use a graphing calculator to solve the system of
equations.
y = x2 - 6x + 9, y = 5 - x
Step 1: Enter the equations into Y1
and Y2.

Step 2: Graph the system.

second curve. Then move the curser close to a solution
and press .

The intersection of (4, 1) is displayed.

Repeat the process to find the other solution of the system.

You can use the graph of a system of equations to solve a
complicated equation. For example to solve x2 + 3x + 5 =
4x + 7, graph f(x) = x2 + 3x + 5 and g(x) = 4x + 7 and
find the x-coordinates of the points intersection. Use
this technique to solve each equation.

15. x2 + 3x + 5 = 4x + 7 -1, 2
16. -2x2 + 4x + 9 = 4x + 1 -2, 2

17. Explain why this technique works.

The x-coordinate of the point where any two functions f(x)

and g(x) intersect represents the solution to f(x) = g(x).
