At school I was always the one with the funny comment, the class clown who never took things too seriously. I enjoyed
making my friends laugh, and to be honest, I seemed to be quite good at it. This was why, at university, I decided to join a
comedy club, a small group of people who wanted to practise their joke-telling in front of a live audience. Once a week I
would go on stage in front of a small group of people and tell my jokes. This was my introduction to becoming a
comedian.
Over the past few years I’ve continued with my hobby. Instead of jokes I like to talk about things that I experience in life
that I find amusing. I’m a dad to a young son and a lot of my act is about some of the funny things he does or about
being a father. The events I perform at only attract small audiences, but you get a lot of support and people do at least
try to laugh, even if they don’t like your act.
I work in an office 9-5 and I perform at the weekend. But don’t think for one minute that it’s just a few hours· work.
Thinking of ideas is difficult. And you need to test these ideas and see what makes people laugh and what doesn’t. You
then throw some things out completely or change them a bit and try again the next week. In addition to the content it’s
about finding your style -what makes you special – and that only comes with practice.
Some people say doing what I do must be quite scary. I’m not sure about scary, but it’s certainly true that standing in
front of an audience and trying to make them laugh is quite a challenge. But it’s worth it when you ‘re successful. It’s
great to make people feel happy and to know that all the time you’ve spent in preparation has worked. This will always
be a hobby rather than a career for me, but one that will hopefully give me a great deal of pleasure for years to come.

Hi, Can you come to my birthday party downtown on Saturday evening at 7 pm? Yes, I can.
We’re trying to decide if it’s better to have dinner at an Italian bistro or to go to a Chinese restaurant called the Golden
Duck. What do you think is the best idea? What do you prefer? Say which I prefer.
Also, we’re going skiing in the mountains on Sunday morning. Would you like to join us? Yes, I would.
ANSWER
Hi Sarah,
Thanks for inviting me! Of course I can come to your birthday party downtown this Saturday evening at 7 pm.
Regarding the dinner, I personally prefer the Italian bistro. I’ve always loved Italian food, but if we go to the Chinese
restaurant, I’m sure it’ll be great too!
And skiing on Sunday morning sounds exciting! Yes, I would love to join you all. It’s been a while since I last went skiing,
so I’m looking forward to it.
By the way, Sarah, should I bring anything special for the skiing trip?
Best wishes,
[Your name]

ANSWER
The Ultimate Travel Destination: Barcelona
Do you love travelling to cities but need help deciding your next destination? Although many people would suggest going
to London, Paris or Rome, my favourite is Barcelona.
This Spanish treasure offers an incredible combination of culture, architecture, and entertainment. Can you imagine
walking through the historic Gothic Quarter, then relaxing on the Barceloneta beach, and later visiting one of Gaudí’s
masterpieces?
In addition, the local cuisine, especially the tapas, is one of the best foods I’ve ever tried. In my opinion, it’s an
experience you shouldn’t miss. I strongly recommend Barcelona to anyone seeking a perfect mix of history and leisure.
If I were you, I’d choose Barcelona. Trust me, it’s worth every moment!
QUESTION AND ANSWER OF A STORY
Last summer, I was walking home with my friends. It was a lovely sunny evening and we were all chatting
and laughing.
Suddenly, we saw two men. They were running into the park. One of the men was carrying a large bag and they looked
scared. Two minutes later, we saw a police car. The police didn’t see the men and they drove away.
We decided to see what was happening, so we went into the park. We couldn’t see the men, but while we were looking
for them, we noticed their bag behind some bushes. When we looked inside, we found that it was full of jewellery. We
called the police immediately!
The police caught the thieves and we received a reward of £100. We were really happy!
