1. Introduction
Open Source Requirements Management Tool (OSRMT) is a highly configurable, free open source
solution for defining and managing Requirements for software development. This is an easy to install
and easy to use solution with capabilities to document all aspects of software development life cycle
(SDLC).

This solution was initially built in 2006. However no further development happened for many years.
In 2019, the redevelopment was initiated by Alan Clifford and a new version (Version 1.6) was
released in Feb 2019 at GitHub. The latest Version is 1.8 that was released in June 2019. This can be
accessed through https://github.com/osrmt/osrmt

1.1 Purpose of this Document


The purpose of this document is to provide a list of all Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about
OSRMT by end users and others in the community.
2. Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is OSRMT?
OSRMT stands for Open Source Requirement Management Tool. It is an open source
product available for free distribution and installation through GitHub.

2. Who can use OSRMT?


Anyone (individual or organisation) who is undertaking a software development project can
use OSRMT to document and trace requirements

3. Which operating systems is OSRMT available on?


OSRMT is available on Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

4. Which database(s) does OSRMT run on?


OSRMT can be installed with any of the following databases: MS access, My SQL, Oracle
Express, PostgreSQL.

5. Does OSRMT have a browser version?


Yes OSRMT has a Browser version.

6. How can we get implementation support?


There are very comprehensive documentation available for implementation. This includes:
Installation guide, User guide and Developer guide. All these documents are available in
GitHub.

7. Who can be contacted to get further support or details?

8. Is there a standalone version available?


Yes, a desktop version is available as well as a multi-user client/server version.

9. Is there a Client /Server version available?


Yes, Multi-user client/server version is also available.

10. Is there a community that supports the product?


We are building an active community of volunteers and users to support one another as we
develop a great open source requirements management tool.

11. Who can join the OSRMT community?


Programmers, system analysts, DBA’s, technical writers, UI/UX designers, solution testers,
business analysts and anyone who is interested in supporting an expanding open source
community are all welcome to join the OSRMT community.
12. What is the cost of OSRMT?

OSRMT is absolutely free. All are welcome to download and install it.

13. What is the programming language used for developing OSRMT?


The current version (Version 1.8) of OSRMT is developed in Java.

14. How often OSRMT gets updated / upgraded?


Regular releases with additional features and bug fixes are planned.

15. Is it possible to customize OSRMT?


Since source code and detailed documentation is available, it is possible for organisations to
customize the solution to meet their specific requirements.

16. Can corporate organisations use OSRMT?


Yes, since OSRMT license is freely distributed, corporations can use it. This can become a
very cost effective and easy to implement, especially if you have a large user base.

17. Is OSRMT available in any language other than English?


OSRMT is available only in English in the current version.
However we are looking for proof readers, editors, translators, people with experience in
developing software solutions in other languages and who are willing to spend even small
amount of time on this project to help us build the product in other languages.

18. Does OSRMT has a reporting module?


Yes, OSRMT has a built in reporting tool. The output is available in PDF or HTML formats.

19. Can complex reports be developed in OSRMT?


Yes, it is possible to develop complex reports in OSRMT. However, you will need the help of
a programmer or a technically skilled person for this.

20. Is it possible to have multiple level user access in OSRMT?


Yes, it is possible to define different roles and responsibilities as “user groups” in OSRMT and
assign these roles to individual users.
21. Does OSRMT have a transaction log mechanism?
Yes, OSRMT has a transaction history option that enables administrators to review and
analyse transaction history.

22. Is it possible to export data from OSRMT?


Yes, it is possible to export data from OSRMT. However, it is not possible to export data to
CSV/Excel format.

23. Is it possible to import data to OSRMT from any external system?


Yes, it is possible to import data to OSRMT. However, it is necessary to prepare the data in
the pre-defined format.

24. Is it possible to track changes in OSRMT?


Yes, it is possible to track changes in OSRMT through the change control module.

25. Is it possible to make changes to OSRMT without programming?


Yes. It is possible to add artifacts and child artifacts through the front end menu options
itself without any programming.
