Solving Problems Involving Parallelograms, Trapezoids and Kites

To solve problems involving parallelograms, trapezoids, and kite, you need to familiarize yourself with
the properties and theorems related to them. Also, you may consider the tips below when solving word problems.

TIPS WHEN SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS

Read and understand the problem, then apply RESA.

R – REPRESENT Represent the given using variable and figure.
E – EQUATION Formulate the appropriate equation using
the properties or theorems.
S – SOLVE Solve the problems. Manipulate the equation.
A – ANSWER Answer the question what is asked in the problem.

Word Problems involving Parallelograms

Illustrative Example 1: The arm of the basketball adjusted that forms a parallelogram. Two consecutive angles
of a parallelogram have measures (𝑥 + 30)° and (2x – 60)°, respectively. What is the measure of the larger
angle?
Solution:
R: Let (𝑥 + 30)° be the measure of one of the angles
(2𝑥 − 60)° be the measure of the other angle
E: Since consecutive angles of a parallelogram are supplementary
Thus, (𝑥 + 30)° + (2𝑥 − 60)° = 180°
S: (𝑥 + 30)° + (2𝑥 − 60)° = 180°
𝑥 + 30 + 2𝑥 − 60 = 180
3𝑥 – 30 = 180
∴ (𝒙 + 𝟑𝟎)° = 70 + 30 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎°
3𝑥 = 180 + 30 (𝟐𝒙 − 𝟔𝟎)° = 2(70)– 60 = 𝟖𝟎°
3𝑥 = 210
𝑥 = 70
A: The larger angle measures 𝟏𝟎𝟎°.
Illustrative Example 2: The scissors lift form a parallelogram which are two opposite angles have measures
(2𝑥 + 5)° and(𝑥 + 30)° , respectively. Find the measures of the angles.
Solution:
R: Let (2𝑥 + 5)° be the measure of one of the angle
(𝑥 + 30)° be the measure of the opposite angle
E: Since opposite angles are congruent
Thus, (2𝑥 + 5)° = (𝑥 + 30)°
S: (2𝑥 + 5)° = (𝑥 + 30)°
2𝑥 + 5 = 𝑥 + 30
∴ (𝟐𝒙 + 𝟓)° = 2(25) + 5 = 55°
2𝑥 – 𝑥 = 30 – 5
(𝒙 + 𝟑𝟎)° = 25 + 30 = 55°
𝑥 = 25
A: Both angles measures 𝟓𝟓°.

Page 3 | 10
MATH 9 QUARTER 3 WEEK 4
Illustrative Example 3: HOPE is a rectangle. If 𝐻𝑃 = 7𝑥 – 10 and 𝐸𝑂 = 2𝑥 + 80, how long is ̅̅̅̅
𝐻𝑃?
Solution:
R: Let 7𝑥 – 10 be the measure of ̅̅̅̅
𝐻𝑃 H O
2𝑥 + 80 be the measure of ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝑂
E: Since diagonals of a rectangle are congruent
Thus, 𝐻𝑃 = 𝐸𝑂 E P
7𝑥 – 10 = 2𝑥 + 80
S: 7𝑥 – 10 = 2𝑥 + 80
7𝑥 – 2𝑥 = 80 + 10 ∴ 𝑯𝑷 = 7𝑥 – 10 = 7(18) – 10
= 126 – 10 = 𝟏𝟏𝟔
5𝑥 = 90
𝑬𝑶 = 2𝑥 + 80 = 2(18) + 80
𝑥 = 18 = 36 + 80 = 𝟏𝟏𝟔
A: ̅̅̅̅̅ is 𝟏𝟏𝟔 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒔.
The length of 𝑯𝑷

Illustrative Example 4: Quadrilateral LIFE is a rhombus. If 𝑚∠𝐿𝐼𝐸 = (𝟒𝐱 − 𝟏𝟑)° and 𝑚∠𝐹𝐼𝐸 = (𝟐𝐱 + 𝟓)° ,
what is the measure of ∠𝐿𝐼𝐹?
L I
Solution:
R: Let 𝑚∠𝐿𝐼𝐸 = (4x − 13)°
𝑚∠𝐹𝐼𝐸 = (2x + 5)°
E: Since diagonals of a rhombus bisect a pair of opposite angles E F
Thus, 𝑚∠𝐿𝐼𝐸 = 𝑚∠𝐹𝐼𝐸
4𝑥 – 13 = 2𝑥 + 5 ∴ 𝑚∠𝑳𝑰𝑬 = (4𝑥 − 13)° = 4(9) – 13
S: 4𝑥 – 13 = 2𝑥 + 5 = 36 – 13 = 23°
𝑚∠𝑭𝑰𝑬 = (2𝑥 + 5)° = 2(9) + 5
4𝑥 – 2𝑥 = 5 + 13
= 18 + 5 = 23°
2𝑥 = 18 𝑚∠𝑳𝑰𝑭 = 𝑚∠𝑳𝑰𝑬 + 𝑚∠𝑭𝑰𝑬 = 23 + 23 = 𝟒𝟔°
𝑥 = 9
A: The measure of ∠𝑳𝑰𝑭 is 𝟒𝟔°.

Word Problems involving Trapezoid

Illustrative Example 1: The gate of Mr. Kimpoy is an isosceles trapezoid in which an upper angle measures
(12𝑥 − 28)° and a lower angle measures (5𝑥 + 38)° respectively. What are the measures of the angles?
Solution: (12𝑥 − 28)°
R: Let (12𝑥 − 28)° and (5𝑥 + 38)°
E: Since same side lower and upper base angles are supplementary.
(5𝑥 + 38)°
(same side interior angles are supplementary)
Thus, Upper Angle + Lower Angle = 180°
(12𝑥 − 28)° + (5𝑥 + 38)° = 180°
S: (12𝑥 – 28)° + (5𝑥 + 38)° = 180°
12𝑥 – 28 + 5𝑥 + 38 = 180
17𝑥 + 10 = 180
17𝑥 = 180 – 10
17𝑥 = 170 ∴ (12𝑥 – 28)° = 12(10) – 28 = 𝟗𝟐°
(5𝑥 + 38)° = 5(10) + 38 = 𝟖𝟖°
𝑥 = 10
A: Upper base angle measure 𝟗𝟐° and lower base angle measure 𝟖𝟖°.

Page 4 | 10
MATH 9 QUARTER 3 WEEK 4
Illustrative Example 2: The side of a toy table makes isosceles trapezoid and the leg measures 3𝑥 + 8 cm
and 𝑥 + 14 cm. What are the actual measures of the legs?
Solution:
R: Let 3𝑥 + 8 cm be the measure of one leg 3𝑥 + 8 cm 𝑥 + 14 cm
𝑥 + 14 cm be the measure of the other leg
E: Since the legs of an isosceles trapezoid are congruent.
Thus, measure of one leg = measure of other leg
3𝑥 + 8 = 𝑥 + 14
S: 3𝑥 + 8 = 𝑥 + 14
3𝑥 – 𝑥 = 14 – 8
∴ 3𝑥 + 8 = 3(3) + 8 = 𝟏𝟕 𝐜𝐦
2𝑥 = 6 𝑥 + 14 = 3 + 14 = 𝟏𝟕 𝐜𝐦
𝑥 = 3
A: The legs measure 𝟏𝟕 cm.
Illustrative Example 3: The side view of the 2-story house of Nikki Ann is an isosceles trapezoid the measure
of the parallel bases are 12𝑥 – 10 and 5𝑥 + 5, and, while the median is 6𝑥 + 10, what will be the measure of
the median? Use meter as unit of measurement.
Solution: 12𝑥 − 10m

R: Let 12𝑥 − 10m be the measure of one of the bases

6𝑥 + 10m
5𝑥 + 5m be the measure of the other base
6𝑥 + 10m be the measure of the median
E: Since median is half the sum of the bases.
5𝑥 + 5m
one base + other base
Thus,median =
2

(12𝑥−10)+(5𝑥+5)
6𝑥 + 10 = 2

(12𝑥−10)+(5𝑥+5)
S: 6𝑥 + 10 = 2

12𝑥 + 20 = 12𝑥 – 10 + 5𝑥 + 5
12𝑥 + 20 = 17𝑥 – 5
12𝑥 − 17𝑥 = −5 – 20 ∴ 6x + 10 = 6(5) + 10
−5𝑥 = −25 = 𝟒𝟎 𝐦
𝑥 = 5
A: The median is 𝟒𝟎 m.

Word Problems involving Kite

Illustrative Example 1: Joey has a kite in which 2 upper side measure 7𝑥 + 10 cm and 15𝑥 – 6, what are the
measures of the two sides?
M
Solution:
7𝑥 + 10 cm 15𝑥 – 6 cm
R: Let 7𝑥 + 10 cm be the measure of one upper side MA
A Y
15𝑥 – 6 cm be the measure of the other upper side MY
E: Since two distinct pairs of consecutive sides are congruent.
Thus,MA = MY
7𝑥 + 10 = 15𝑥 – 6
L

Page 5 | 10
MATH 9 QUARTER 3 WEEK 4
S: 7𝑥 + 10 = 15𝑥 – 6
7𝑥 – 15𝑥 = −6 – 10
−8𝑥 = −16 ∴ MA = 7𝑥 + 10 = 7(2) + 10 = 𝟐𝟒 𝐜𝐦
𝑥 = 2 MY = 15𝑥 – 6 = 15(2) – 6 = 𝟐𝟒 𝐜𝐦

A: Both sides measure 𝟐𝟒 cm.

Illustrative Example 2: Mr. Nelvin has a sugar cane farm with a kite shape in which the opposite angles along
the cross diagonals measures (3x + 5)° and (5x – 17)° respectively, what are the measures of the said angles?
Solution: A
(3𝑥 + 5)° (5𝑥 – 17)°
R: Let (3𝑥 + 5)° be m∠D D B
(5𝑥 – 17)° be m∠B
E: Since one pair of opposite angles is congruent
Thus, m∠ADC = m∠ABC
(3𝑥 + 5)° = (5𝑥 – 17)°
S: (3𝑥 + 5)° = (5𝑥 – 17)°
3𝑥 + 5 = 5𝑥 − 17
3𝑥 – 5𝑥 = −17 – 5
−2𝑥 = −22 ∴ m∠ADC = (3𝑥 + 5)° = 3(11) + 5 = 𝟑𝟖°
𝑥 = 11 m∠ABC = (5𝑥 – 17)° = 5(11) – 17 = 𝟑𝟖°
A: Both angles measure 𝟑𝟖°.

Illustrative Example 3: Antonio has a kite whose diagonals measure 9 cm and 18 cm. Find the area of Antonio’s
kite.
Solution:
R: Let 9 cm be the measure of one diagonal
18 cm be the measure of the other diagonal
E: Since area is half the product of the diagonals.
(one diagonal) (other diagonal)
Thus,A = 2

(9)(18)
A= 2

(9)(18)
S: A= 2
162
A= 2

A = 𝟖𝟏 sq. cm
A: The area of Antonio’s kite is 𝟖𝟏 sq. cm.
