Question Bank
Ch – 3 Motion in a plane
1. State the parallelogram of vector addition and find the magnitude and direction of the resultant
of two vectors.
2. State the triangle law of vector addition. Give analytical method to find the magnitude and
direction of the resultant of two vectors.
3. What is a projectile? Derive the expression for trajectory, time of flight, maximum height,
horizontal range for a projectile thrown upwards, making an angle θ with the horizontal
direction.
4. A projectile is projected horizontally with a velocity u. Show that the trajectories is parabolic
and obtain expressions for Time of flight, Horizontal Range, velocity of the projectile at any
instant.
5. Define the following terms:
a) Angular displacement b) Angular velocity c) Time period d) Frequency
6. Define Uniform Circular Motion. Deduce the relation between angular velocity, frequency and
time period.
7. Define Uniform Circular Motion. Deduce the relation between linear velocity and angular
velocity.
8. Define angular acceleration. Deduce its relation with linear acceleration.
Ch- 4 Laws Of Motion
1. A person of mass m is standing in a lift. Find his apparent weight when
the lift is:
I. Moving upwards with uniform acceleration a.
II. Moving downwards with uniform acceleration a.
III. Falls freely
2. Explain the following:
I. Why it is easier to pull a lawn roller than to push it.
II. When we shake the branch of a tree, its leaves fall down.
III. An athlete runs for a certain distance before taking a long jump.
IV. Why wheels are provided with the mud guards.
V. How is a horse able to pull a cart?
VI. A cricket player lowers his hands while catching the ball.
VII. It is difficult to walk on a slippery ground.
3. Fine an expression for the velocity of recoil of gun. [ Based on Conservation of Momentum]
4. Define the terms static friction, limiting friction and kinetic friction. Draw the graph between
friction and applied force on any object and show static friction, limiting friction and kinetic
friction in graph. Using graph show that static friction is a self adjusting force.
5. Define angle of friction and angle of repose. Show that both are numerically equal.
6. What is meant by banking of roads? What is the need for banking a road? Obtain an
expression for the maximum speed with which a vehicle can safely negotiate a curved road
banked at an angle θ, The coefficient of friction between the wheels and the road is μ.
7. Why does a cyclist lean inwards while negotiating a curve? Explain with diagram.
Ch- 5 Work, Energy, Power
8. Define the kinetic energy and potential energy. Derive the expression for the kinetic energy
and potential energy of mass m moving with velocity ν.
9. State the work – energy theorem. Prove it for a variable force.
10. What are conservative and non-conservative forces? Explain.
11. State the principle of conservation of mechanical energy. Show that the total mechanical
energy of the freely falling body remains constant throughout its fall.
12. Show that the total energy of the stretched spring remains conserved when it is released. Find
the expression for the maximum speed.
13. Define the term Power. Is it a scalar or vector quantity? Give its dimensions and units.
14. Define the terms:
a) Collisions b) Elastic collision c) inelastic collision
d) super elastic collision e) inelastic collision f) head-on collision
15. Prove that in an elastic one- dimensional collision between two bodies, the relative velocity of
approach before collision is equal to the relative velocity of separation after the collision.
Hence derive expressions for the velocities of the two bodies in terms of their initial velocities
before collision. Discuss the special cases also.
16. Discuss the elastic collision in two dimensions.
