Problem Statement:
Current accident detection systems are limited by false positives, reliance on
network connectivity, and a lack of real-time verification and passenger health
monitoring.
This project aims to develop an IoT and AI-based Smart Car Accident Detection
System that accurately detects accidents, reduces false alarms, and notifies
emergency services with critical details, even in remote areas.
Explanation
In the current landscape of vehicular accidents, timely detection and response are
critical in minimizing the impact on human life and property. However, existing
systems for accident detection often suffer from several limitations, including false
positives, network dependency, power issues, and lack of real-time verification of
the accident scene. Moreover, many current solutions lack integration with
emergency services and fail to provide comprehensive data on passenger health,
limiting their effectiveness, particularly in remote areas.
This project aims to develop a Smart Car Accident Detection and Alert System that
leverages the Internet of Things (IoT) along with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to
address these challenges. By integrating accelerometers, GPS modules, vibration
sensors, and AI-based algorithms, the system will accurately detect accidents,
classify their severity, and automatically notify emergency contacts and services
with critical details, including location and time.
The system will also include features to enhance real-time communication, such as:
● Integration with AI/ML models to reduce false positives by learning and
analyzing driving patterns and sensor data.
● Biometric sensors for passenger health monitoring, detecting potential injuries
by analyzing heart rate and oxygen levels.
● Cloud-based storage to log accident data for further analysis and future
improvements in prediction models.
● Voice-activated SOS feature to trigger alerts hands-free in emergency
situations.
● Battery backup systems to ensure continuous operation even when vehicle
power is lost.
● Data Preprocessing:
○ Filtering: Raw sensor data can be noisy. Apply low-pass or high-pass
filters to remove noise and smooth the data.
○ Normalization: Normalize sensor data to standardize the range of
values (e.g., acceleration values from -10 to 10 m/s²).
● Feature Extraction:
○ Calculate acceleration values in the X, Y, and Z axes (from the
accelerometer data).
○ Compute the magnitude of acceleration using the formula:

● Threshold-based Impact Detection:

○ When the magnitude of acceleration exceeds the threshold or the tilt
angle surpasses a predefined limit, classify the event as a potential
accident.
● Event Detection:
○ If the detected acceleration exceeds the threshold and continues for a
specific duration, it's classified as an accident. Sudden spikes in
acceleration or tilt angle could indicate a crash.
Once an accident is detected, the system must classify the severity (minor,
moderate, or severe) based on sensor data (acceleration, vibration, and tilt) and
driving patterns.
Machine Learning Approach:
● Data Collection:
○ Training Data: Gather labeled accident data from various sources (e.g.,
past accident records, simulation data) that includes the sensor values,
impact details (acceleration, tilt, vibration), and accident severity.
● Feature Engineering:
○ Extract features such as:
■ Peak acceleration: Maximum acceleration observed during the
event.
■ Impact duration: Time duration for which the acceleration
exceeds a threshold.
■ Vibration amplitude: The intensity of vibrations measured by
sensors.
■ Tilt angle: Angle of the vehicle when the impact occurs.
■ Speed change: The change in the vehicle's speed before and after
the incident.
● Training ML Model:
○ Classification Algorithms: Use supervised machine learning algorithms
to classify the severity of the accident. Some commonly used algorithms
for this type of classification are:
■ Random Forest Classifier: A robust and interpretable algorithm
that works well for classification tasks. It uses multiple decision
trees and outputs the majority class.
■ Support Vector Machine (SVM): SVM with non-linear kernels
can be effective in classifying accident severity based on complex
patterns in sensor data.
■ K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN): A simple, intuitive algorithm that
classifies an event based on the majority class of its k-nearest
neighbors in the feature space.
■ Neural Networks (Deep Learning): A deep neural network could
be trained on the accident data to learn complex patterns between
the sensor data and accident severity. A simple feedforward neural
network could be used for this purpose.
● Model Training and Evaluation:
○ Split the dataset into training and testing subsets (e.g., 80% for training,
20% for testing).
○ Train the classifier using the labeled data.
○ Evaluate the model's performance using accuracy, precision, recall, and
F1 score.
○ Tune the hyperparameters of the model (e.g., number of trees in Random
Forest, kernel type in SVM) to improve performance.
● Severity Classification:
○ After training, the model classifies the detected accident based on the
input sensor features. It outputs one of three categories:

■ Severe: High impact (e.g., significant collision, high acceleration,
