DESIGN REPORT FOR THE LIFTING OF BLOCKS TYPE B1 - B7
1. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of the report is to ensure that the precast plain concrete blocks can be lifted safely without
compromising their structural integrity of the units.
• The tensile stresses of the concrete due to flexure and shear induced during lifting and handling.
• The cracking checks in the blocks at working load conditions to ensure that blocks have sufficient
strength to resist the development of cracks at lifting operations.
• The structural capacities of the blocks to bending and shearing have also been checked in this
report.
The precast blocks tabulated below have been considered in the report. The weights of the blocks below
have been determined by modeling in 3D in AutoCAD software considering the reduction for chamfers.
Lifting pockets have been deducted also in the calculation of weights.

7. LIFTING CONFIGURATION
Locations of the lift pockets in blocks have been positioned in order that the bending and shear forces will
be balanced in the mid-span and in the cantilever area. The lift points have been located symmetrically
about the center of gravity of the block.
8. DESIGN INPUTS
a) Static Loads – Based form concrete test results, a unit weight of 24.0 kN/m3 has been considered to
calculate the selfweight of the blocks. Blocks have also been modelled in AutoCAD to get the correct
weight of the blocks where chamfers have been deducted. The weight of the blocks will be assumed
to be evenly distributed over the entire length.
b) Suction/Adhesion loads
A suction force of 5kpa has been considered in the whole soffit area of the block as an additional load.
This force could develop between the precast block drying/curing concrete and its steel plated casting
bed when the unit is being lifted from the pre‐casting bed. This suction/adhesion force has been
included in the elastic analysis. The width considered is 3.0m for all the blocks.

DESIGN REPORT FOR THE LIFTING OF BLOCKS TYPE B1 - B7
During lifting operations the blocks will be subject to global dynamic load effects, these effects have
been accounted for using a dynamic amplification factor (DAF). The DAF was calculated in
accordance with DNV‐OS‐H205 which provides specific recommendations for inshore and offshore
lifting operations; DAF = 1.07 + 0.25 Ö(100/SHL)
The structural analysis was based on a limit state design approach using EN 1992‐1‐1:2004.
The ULS flexural checks were based on linear elastic theory, the concrete tensile and compression design
strength are based on the following equations:

EN 1992‐1‐1:2004 Section 12.6.3 (3) states that a plain concrete member may be considered to be
un‐cracked if the absolute value of the concrete tensile stress σct1 does not exceed the design tensile
strength of plain concrete fctd,pl. The table below summarizes the results from Appendix B.

11. CONCLUSION
The results of the structural verifications indicate that the plain concrete blocks have adequate strength to
resist the shear forces and bending moments during lifting at the ultimate limit state based on 20 Mpa (fcu)
cube strength.
The serviceability verifications indicate that all of the blocks will remain un‐cracked during lifting at the
serviceability limit state as per the design checks.
