ABSTRACT

Maintenance for large electric motors has generally consisted of

traditional tests used to determine the condition of the ground wall insulation of
the stator and the integrity of the rotor bars. These tests are trended and an attempt
is made to estimate the remaining life of the motor by analysing the past
performance of motors under study. An alternate scheme is proposed which
consists of some traditional tests correlated with new techniques. Capacitance
tests, balance of resistance tests, and balance of inductance tests are not used
widely today. Another promising test indirectly measures the negative sequence
currents which are produced by the fault. Furthermore, there is some discrepancy
as to how to perform and analyse common procedures which can yield useful
information. This clarifies the best techniques and procedures through theory and
experience in an industrial setting. It examines each test and determines its value
according to effectiveness and practicality.

Most electrical equipment requires planned inspection and

maintenance to keep it in proper working condition. Periodic inspections prevent
serious damage to machinery by locating potential trouble areas. Observant
personnel will make full use of their senses to diagnose and locate problems in
electrical machinery: the sense of smell directs attention to burning insulation; the
sense of touch detects excessive heating in windings or bearings; the sense of
hearing detects excessive speed or vibration; the sense of sight detects excessive
sparking and many mechanical faults.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Electrical Maintenance-

Advances in the design and quality of electrical components have made it

possible for electrical systems to run for years without noticeable problems. While
wonderful feats of engineering, well-designed electrical systems can lull building
owners and operators into a false sense of security—right up until the moment the
system fails. It’s for this reason, among others, that electrical maintenance is such
an important part of commercial building operations.

What is Electrical Maintenance?

Electrical maintenance covers all aspects of testing, monitoring, fixing, and
replacing elements of an electrical system. Usually performed by a licensed
professional with a complete knowledge of the National Electric Code and local
regulations, electrical maintenance covers areas as diverse as:

– Digital communication
– Electrical machines
– Generators
– Hydraulics
– Lighting systems
– Pneumatics– Surge protection – Transformers.

With an increased reliance on both data collection and machinery run by

computer software, electrical maintenance is more vital than ever. The failure of a
single component in the electrical system can cause extensive downtime or data
loss.
➢ Chapter 2: What is Electrical Maintenance And its Need-

Maintenance of electrical equipment is the work that keeps mechanical

assets running with minimal downtime.

Maintenance of electrical equipment can include regularly scheduled service,

routine checks, and both scheduled and emergency repairs. It also includes
replacement or realignment of parts that are worn, damaged, or misaligned.
Machine maintenance can be done either in advance of failure or after failure
occurs.

• Need OF Maintenance Of Electrical Equipment-

Proper Maintenance of equipment is well worth the investment. Here are some of
the long-term benefits of equipment maintenance due to which maintenance is
required:

1) Extend equipment lifespan and reduce the need for having to purchase new
equipment.

2) Prevent unplanned downtime which can be costly and interrupt the

manufacturing process.

3) Avoid the need for expensive repairs due to negligence.

4) Keep equipment running without interruption to ensure that projects get

completed on time and on budget.
5) Ensure that systems are working efficiently to reduce energy consumption
and operating cost.

6) Prevent small issues from growing into big problems that are time
consuming and costly to fix since complex repair often comes with a
bigger price tag and longer downtime.

7) Increase the resale value of the equipment with a proper service record.

8) Increase equity and borrowing power by upkeeping the value of your

assets.

9) Reduce injuries and fatalities, and therefore liability, due to faulty

equipment.

10)Maximize warranty coverage by having detailed service records to

demonstrate that maintenance is up to date.
➢ Chapter 3: Routine Maintenance of Induction Motor-

- Routine maintenance programme consists mainly the maintenance which

can mostly carried out daily.

- Routine maintenance is one of the simplest maintenance which is carried

out easily and it requires less time.

- Routine maintenance of induction motor mainly consists of :

1) Cleaning of dust by using blowers.

2) Recording of load current and voltage.

3) Checking of Temperature, vibration, noise level, etc.

4) Checking of earth connection

➢ Chapter 4: Preventive Maintenance of Induction Motor-

- It is planned and well organized schedule of maintenance which is carried

out to prevent a large breakdown of an system.

- In preventive maintenance schedule the maintenance which can be

carried

- out each weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly, two yearly, or five yearly.

- Preventive maintenance of Induction Motor consists of :

1) Inspection of loose parts.

2) Inspection of ventilation system.

3) Oiling and Greasing programme.

4) Replacement of weared out parts or any repairs if necessary.

- Due to above maintenance programme we avoid development of major

faults as well as breakdown of equipment.

❖ Advantages of Preventive Maintenance

• Less equipment downtime

• Fewer interruptions to critical operations Longer asset life
• Improved efficiency (assets in good repair tend to operate better)
• Increased workplace safety and improved compliance with OSHA
Chapter 5: Breakdown Maintenance of Induction Motor-

- This type of maintenance is to be carried out immediately when a

breakdown fault takes place.

- Breakdown may be develop due to short circuit fault caused in winding,

earth fault, failure of bearings In rotating machine, etc.

- In this type of maintenance immediate steps are taken to repair the fault,
rewinding is carried out if winding is burnt out or faulty parts are
replaced immediately at the same time following checking should be
carried out so that further breakdown should not takes place.

1) Tightness of stationary parts is checked.

2) it is also checked that the moving parts are free to move and there
is no damage to it.

3) Reason for the fault to take place, which can be eliminated.

4) Atmospheric conditions and surroundings in which machine to be

placed for their work.
Chapter 6: Predictive Maintenance of Induction Motor-

- In this type of maintenance prediction will be made with the help of

routine or preventive maintenance schedule.

- According to the condition of working schedule to be planned to avoid the

breakdown of a machine such schedule also helps to maintain the
machines well for production without disturbing the production

- Prediction are made by the skilled person from the preventive schedule
and avoid major damage of an equipment.

- It consists of checking of temperature, checking, of insulation, noise level,

vibration, bearings in case of rotating machines, etc.

- Predictive maintenance techniques are designed to help determine the

condition of in-service equipment in order to estimate when maintenance
should be performed. The main promise of predictive maintenance is to
allow convenient scheduling of corrective maintenance, and to prevent
unexpected equipment failures.
Chapter 7: Maintenance Schedule For Induction Motor-
