Lapping of Rebar

Lap length is crucial for transferring stress between steel reinforcements and depends on the grades of concrete and steel. Overlap is required when cutting length exceeds 12 mm, with specific guidelines for lap splices as per IS 456:2000, including restrictions on bar sizes and recommendations for staggered splices. The lap length for flexural tension must be the greater of the development length or 30 times the diameter, and bars should not overlap more than 50% at one position.

 Lap length is the length that we use to transfer the stress from one steel reinforcement to another

steel reinforcement. It is depend upon grade of concrete and grade of steel.

 When we provide overlap-

 If cutting length (CL) > 12 mm.

 We provide overlap at every floor in column.

 Number of overlap = cutting length / 12 = 0.00

Lap splices as per IS 456 : 2000
clause no. 26.2.5.1

 Lap splices shall not be used for bars larger than 36 mm for larger diameters, bars may be welded.

R EINFORCE
 Lap length in flexural tension shall be Ld or 30d whichever is greater.

 The lap length in compression shall be equal to the development length in compression.

 Lap splices shall be considered as staggered if the centre to centre distance of the splices is not
less than 1.3 times the lap length calculated.

 When bars of two different diameters are to be spliced, the lap length shall be calculated on the

basis of diameter of the smaller bar.

 Bar should not be lapped more than 50% at one position.
