1. Read about the government of ancient Rome.
Early Rome was ruled by a series of kings for about 200 years. This was a monarchy.
Eventually people were upset about how they were treated so they overthrew the last
king. They vowed to never have a king again. This was the beginning of the Roman
Republic.
In a republic, citizens can choose their leaders through voting. Those who are elected to
represent the people are called representatives. The Roman Republic was ruled by a
large group of elected men. They called themselves the Senate. The citizens of Rome
elected two top Senators. They were called consuls. The consuls decided when to add
new laws and when to go to war. Consuls held their position for one year, then they had
to be elected again. The consuls also selected senators from qualifying patricians.
Patricians were a group of wealthier families. Together, they formed the Senate.
Plebeians were the common people. Eventually, plebeians could be elected to the
Senate. Other government roles included prefects. Prefects were chosen to run parts of
the city. Sometimes they acted as judges or police. Tribunes were appointed to
represent the plebeians. They could make demands on behalf of the plebeians. The
system of the Republic worked for about 500 years in ancient Rome.
As time passed, problems arose in Rome that the Senate could not solve. For instance,
the government kept running out of money. They needed money to pay for roads and
the taxes. There was also corruption and crime. Rome was out of control.
That is one leader, Julius Caesar, decided to bring his army into town and force the
Senate to step down. This new style of leadership led to a dictatorship. The head of the
government was called the Emperor. The Emperor was backed by a strong military, so
he could force change. Over time the Senate lost all of its power. The emperor
eventually made all the laws and set all the taxes. For another 300 years, Rome was
ruled by emperors before it started to decline.
