ACTIVITY 1
In compliance with republic act no. 1425 or the Rizal law, all public and private
schools, colleges and universities must include the works and writings of Jose Rizal in
the curricula, specifically his two famous novels Noli me tangere and El filibusterismo.
I am definitely in favor of this law for some reasons. First, the only objective of
this law is to keep the memory of Jose Rizal alive, especially as he fought for the freedom
of every Filipino. Since it mandates the teaching of life, works and writing of Jose Rizal,
students would understand the historical and cultural importance of Rizal’s contribution
to our country. Likewise, students would have an in-depth understanding of Philippine
history, especially how our fellow Filipinos strived and fought many years ago to
experience the freedom we have right now. As a student, learning about the life and
works of Rizal will help me to appreciate our national hero as well as to give tribute to
him for devoting his life, even his works to shape Filipinos when it comes to characters
and values. Moreover, I believe that this act was not approved to harm us or to give any
confusions in our minds but to help us in recommitting our lives to the ideals of
nationalism and freedom which was given to us. Most of us tend to forget the history of
how we attained the freedom we benefited from many years ago and up to this day. The
only way to appreciate and acknowledge it is to look back and learn from the past.
The republic act no. 1425 or also known as the Rizal law plays an important role
in instilling patriotism among students. According to Senator Claro M. Recto and Senator
Jose B. Laurel Sr, its main objective is to keep the memory of the national hero alive in
every Filipino’s mind and to emanate Rizal as he peacefully fought for freedom and not
to go against religion. Since the Rizal law is included in the curriculum of every School
in the Philippines, students will enrich their understanding about the history, culture and
values of our country. The Rizal law effectively instills patriotism among students like
me because of the knowledge it imparts when it comes to the history on how the
Philippines gained freedom from invaders. Moreover, a student like me would learn to
empathize to those Filipinos who worked hard up until their last breath. Furthermore, the
Rizal law helps in shaping every Filipino’s mind by having a deep appreciation and
patriotism for the culture and heritage that was given to us by our ancestors or fellow
Filipinos.
In conclusion, the Rizal law effectively inspires every Filipino’s mind to love,
honor and acknowledge our nation. It promotes freedom, which is the message of Rizal to
every youth and among Filipinos.
