LICENSING ISSUE:
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is once again in hot water after nearly a third of its pilots were suspected of holding
fake or "dubious" licenses and dodging exams following inquiries into their qualifications.
The 262 grounded pilots pending conclusion of inquiries against them included 141 from PIA, nine from Air Blue, 10 from
Serene Airline, and 17 from Shahen Airlines, Pakistani Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan announced on Friday. They
included 109 commercial and 153 airline transport pilots.
The purge has sparked global concern, raising questions over how the Pakistani pilots acquired licenses from Pakistan's
Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and worked for international airlines across the world.
The license scandal emerged in the wake of last month's plane crash in the southern port city of Karachi that killed 97
people on board. The crash prompted a preliminary report, which found that the pilots had failed to follow standard
procedures and disregarded alarms.
Khan said authorities had been investigating collusion between pilots and civil aviation officials since late 2018 to
circumvent examinations. He said all the pilots were accused of having someone sit one or more exam papers for them,
and sometimes even all the eight papers required for an airline pilot's license
STAFF SHORTAGE:
Total separation in PIA since 2018 is 5,793 out of which 1,199 employees pertain to flight operations (pilots), flight
services (cabin crew), finance and IT department and no fresh hiring has been made whereas our immediate
requirement is 250 employees for the year 2023, read a report submitted by the PIA through its counsel Salman Akram
Raja in the apex court.
The national carrier wrote in its report that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) required that an operator
establish the minimum number of cabin crew required for each aircraft type in its fleet.
The goal of this requirement is to allow for a safe and expeditious evacuation of the aircraft, and to enable cabin crew to
carry out the necessary functions to be performed in an emergency or a situation requiring emergency evacuation, it
elaborated.
The report stated that to meet the operational challenges, there was a dire need to recruit the professional and skilled
manpower in operational areas on a priority basis and the strength required.
HARASSMENT TO CREW:
Pakistan International Airline has been in decline since decades. Government has tried to privatize it to resolve the
issues but all efforts went vague. Other than lack of facilities, financial and, management problems recently main issue
has been identified. Not a long ago, a British Hotel issued a notice banning PIA pilots and crew from staying in their
hotel. Upon investigating further, it was found that because female staffs in hotel feel secure and are at times harassed
by the PIA members.
This has brought shame to whole nation and not just Pakistan’s prestigious airline system. It is the duty of higher
authorities to maintain the discipline, make sure all follow the moral code of conduct along with other duties to increase
country’s honor as they are the ambassadors of Pakistan.
COVID 19 ISSUE:
Aviation industry across the globe has been badly hit by Covid-19 pandemic. PIA took early actions from February 2020
before many of the global shutdowns began, which include:
Developing a ‘cash ICU’, engaging with financial institutions, major vendors and suppliers to pre-empt and manage
cash flow crisis better.
Operating early repatriation flights. In total 300k Pakistanis have been repatriated, many from regions PIA had not
previously flown to.
Quickly shifting to remote working.
Adoption of strict operating procedures to ensure passenger and crew safety.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, PIA will continue to face a very challenging and uncertain environment. Priority
areas of focus will remain on cash flow management, motivating and retaining talent, and improving product and service
quality and safety.
