Q1: The system with two degree of freedom is shown in Figure 1. Express the velocity of the
lower cylinder or pulley at C in terms of that of the cylinders at A and B.

Q2: To increase his speed, the water skier A cuts across the wake of the tow boat B, which
has a velocity of 60 km/h (refer Figure 2). At the instant when θ = 30◦ , the actual path
of the skier makes an angle β = 50◦ with the tow rope. For this position determine the
velocity vA of the skier and the value of θ̇.

Q3: The 10-kg steel sphere is suspended from the 15-kg frame which slides down the 20◦ incline,
as shown in Figure 3. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the frame and incline is
0.15, compute the tension in each of the supporting wires A and B.
Q4: The slotted arm revolves in the horizontal plane about the fixed vertical axis through
point O, as shown in Figure 4. The 1.5 kg slider C is drawn toward O at a constant
1
rate of 5 cm/sec by pulling the cord S. At the instant when r = 20 cm, the arm has
a counterclockwise angular velocity ω = 6 rad/sec and is slowing down at a rate of 2
rad/sec2 . For this instant, determine the tension T in the cord and the magnitude N of
the force exerted on the slider by the sides of the smooth radial slot. Indicate which side,
A or B, of the slot contacts the slider.
Q5: The small slider of mass m is released from rest while in position A and then slides along
the vertical-plane track (refer Figure 5). The track is smooth from A to D and rough
(coefficient of kinetic friction µk ) from point D on. Determine
(a) the normal force NB exerted by the track on the slider just after it passes point B,
(b) the normal force NC exerted by the track on the slider as it passes the bottom point
C,
(c) the distance s traveled along the incline past point D before the slider stops.
Q6: A 100 g ball is projected from a height 3 m with a horizontal velocity of 2 m/sec and
bounces from a 500 g smooth plate supported by spring (as shown in Figure 6). Imme-
diately after the impact the plate has downward velocity of 2.5 m/s. Determine (a) the
rebound height H, (b) the percentage of energy lost due to the impact, (c) Coefficient of
restitution during the impact.
