4. Procedures

I. Preparatory activities.
4.1 Introductory Activity
3 minutes 1. The teacher will ask students about their
understanding about the record keeping.
II. Farm Record Matching
A. The class will be divided into three
groups. Each group will receive a set of
cards (one with record types and one
with descriptions). Their task is to match
the record types with their corresponding
descriptions based on what they think
the records should document. After
matching, ask each group to briefly
share their answers with the class and
explain why they matched the
descriptions in that way.

 Flashcards should have the following

information:
1. Livestock Inventory Record:
Documenting the number, breed, age,
and gender of the livestock on the farm.

4.2 Activity 2. Feed Consumption Record: Tracking

7 minutes the amount and type of feed consumed
by livestock over a specific period.
3. Mortality Report: Recording deaths
and causes of death among the animals.
4. Sow and Litter Performance Record:
Documenting the number of piglets
born, their health status, and
performance.
5. Sow Breeding Performance Record:
Tracking the breeding dates, successful
pregnancies, and outcomes for sows.
6. Boar Performance Record: Keeping
track of the performance of boars, such
as the number of successful matings.

7. Expense Record: Documenting all

expenses related to farm operations,
including feed, veterinary care, and
equipment costs.
4.3 Analysis
3 minutes I. After the “Farm Record Simulation,”
students will answer a few reflective
questions to analyze the activity and its
importance.

1. What did you learn about the role of each record

in managing a hog farm?
2. How does record-keeping help in making
decisions regarding feed, breeding, and financial
management?
3. What challenges might a farmer face in keeping
accurate records?

4.4 Abstraction
15 minutes Record Keeping

Keeping accurate and up-to-date records is very

important in swine raising operations. It serves as future
reference for improving the business. It also helps you
identify animals to be culled and animals to be retained.
It also tells whether the project is gaining or losing.

Prices of feeds and hogs are unstable. The demand for

pork also fluctuates. Determining the best time of the
year to produce more hogs can be accurately done
through experience and this can easily be predicted by
keeping records.

There is a standard form of records used by swine

raisers. A swine raiser can devise his or her own format
to follow. But regardless of the format used, the
following are the important records to accomplish in a
swine project:

1. Livestock inventory record. This record lists the

number of animals monthly. It indicates whether there
is an increase or decrease in the animal population.

2. Feed consumption record. This record identifies the

kind and total amount of feeds consumed by the
animals for one month.

3. Sow and litter performance record. This record

shows the performance of the sow and its litter from
birth to weaning time.

4. Sow breeding performance record. The

performance of the sow from breeding to farrowing can
be seen from this record.

5. Boar performance record. The breeding

performance of the boar can be identified by this
record.

6. Summary of mortality report. This is also a record

which represents the number of animals that died and
identifies the cause of their deaths.

7. Expense record. All expenses in the swine raising

project are entered under this record for accounting
purposes.

The following are samples of the different records

essential in a swine raising project.

Create Your Own Hog Farm Record

4.5 Application With the same group, each group will create
10 minutes a simplified “Record Keeping Sheet” for
their hypothetical hog farm for Livestock
inventory record.

Each student will be distributed a handout

with hypothetical data for the hog farm.
Ensure the data is varied and realistic, but
simplified for easy completion by students.

The following table provides information on the animals in

the hog farm. The details include the breed, sex, age, and
health condition of each animal.
