Complex Numbers
Theory

The square of any real number is not negative. The number i is defined to be the solution to the equation
x2 = –1, or we can say i2 = –1.

i2 = (–1)
i=

i, or iota is defined as square root of –1

A complex number can be represented in the form z = a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and
i= . This is known as standard form of a complex number. The number a is called real part of z, and
bi is called imaginary part of z.
Powers of i
i1 =
i2 = –1
i3 = –i
i4 = 1
i5 = (i4) i = i ……

Example
Find the value of + + .
Solution
8i + 4i + 2i
14i
Example
Find the value of i 8 .
Solution
i8
= (i 4)2
= (1)2
=1

11
Arithmetic of Complex Numbers
Addition

For addition, we add real parts separately and imaginary parts separately.
For example
Z1 = 6 + 5i , Z2 = 2 + 9i

Z1 + Z2 = 6 + 5i + 2 + 9i
= (6 + 2) + (5 + 9)i
= 8 + 14i

Subtraction
For subtraction, we subtract real parts separately and imaginary parts separately.
For example
Z1 = 6 + 5i , Z2 = 2 + 9i

Z1 – Z2 = (6 + 5i ) – (2 + 9i)
= 6 + 5i –2 –9i
= (6 – 2) + ( 5 – 9)i
= 4 – 4i

Multiplication
Multiplication is performed similar to multiplication of binomials, using the fact i2 = –1.
For example
Z1 = 6 + 5i , Z2 = 2 + 9i

Z1 · Z2 = (6 + 5i) (2 + 9i)
= (6)(2) + (6)(9i) + (5i)(2) + (5i)(9i)
= 12 + 54i + 10i + (45)i2
= 12 + 64i – 45
= – 33 + 64i

12
Division
Before understanding division of one complex number by another complex number, let us get comfortable
with the conjugate of a complex number.

Conjugate of a complex number

_
The complex number z = a – bi is known as complex conjugate of z = a + bi.
_
The product of z and z will be
(a+bi)(a–bi) = a2 – abi + abi – (b2)i2
= a2 + b2
a and b are real numbers, so a2 + b2 will also be a real number. The product of a complex number and
its conjugate is always a real number.

Whenever a complex number is in the denominator, we multiply the denominator and numerator by the
conjugate of the denominator which makes denominator a real number.
