Greeting and Introduction

Good afternoon, esteemed teachers My name is Ai My. Today, I am honored to present on the
topic “The Impact of Pandemics on Society.” Throughout history, pandemics have not only
posed serious threats to public health but also reshaped societies in profound and lasting ways.
From the Black Death in the 14th century to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, these global health
crises have changed how we live, work, and interact with one another.
Overview of the Presentation
My talk today is divided into three main parts:
Firstly, I will discuss the impact on social relationships and daily life.
Secondly, I will explain how pandemics transform education and work.
And thirdly, I will analyze how pandemics expose and deepen social inequalities.
Main Body
1. Changes in Social Relationships and Daily Life
One of the most immediate impacts of pandemics is on daily life and social connections.
Measures such as lockdowns, quarantines, and social distancing are necessary to control the
spread of disease, but they often lead to isolation. During COVID-19, many people could not
attend weddings, funerals, or family gatherings. Social activities like dining out, going to the
cinema, or even visiting loved ones became limited or impossible. As a result, feelings of
loneliness, stress, and anxiety increased dramatically. Even after restrictions were lifted, people
became more cautious about physical interactions, which changed social behaviors and routines.
2. Impact on Education and Work
Pandemics have a significant effect on education systems and workplaces. Schools and
universities were closed in many countries, and online learning became the primary method of
education. This shift created challenges for students and teachers, especially in areas with limited
access to technology or the internet. For instance, in South Africa, it was reported that between
400,000 and 500,000 students dropped out of school from March 2020 to July 2021 due to the
prolonged school closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (UNICEF, 2021). This alarming
figure highlights the severe impact of the pandemic on students’ ability to continue their
education, particularly in under-resourced regions. In the workplace, many employees had to
adjust to working from home. Although remote work offered flexibility, it also led to challenges
such as isolation, reduced collaboration, and difficulties in maintaining work-life balance.
At the same time, millions of people working in industries like tourism, hospitality, and
manufacturing lost their jobs, increasing economic stress for families and communities.
3. Deepening Social Inequalities
Pandemics often worsen existing social inequalities. Vulnerable populations, such as the poor,
elderly, and disabled, are typically hit hardest. They may lack access to quality healthcare, proper
housing, and stable income. During COVID-19, for example, many low-income families
struggled with remote learning because they did not have computers or reliable internet
connections. Similarly, frontline workers, such as healthcare staff and delivery drivers, faced
higher risks of infection while receiving limited support. In addition, certain communities
experienced stigma and discrimination, being unfairly blamed for the spread of disease.
Justifying the Importance of the Topic
This topic is particularly relevant today because pandemics continue to be a global threat.
Understanding their social impacts helps us to better prepare, respond, and support one another
in future crises.
Conclusion
In conclusion, pandemics deeply impact societies. They disrupt our daily lives and relationships,
change the way we study and work, and highlight inequalities that already exist in our
communities. However, they also offer a chance for us to reflect, learn lessons, and build a more
resilient and caring society. Thank you very much for your attention. I am happy to answer any
questions you may have
