File Properties

You can easily find out a lot of detailed information about a


particular file.

Using Windows Explorer, go to your area. Find a file that you


want to examine i.e. a word processing document, a
spreadsheet, a presentation etc.

Don’t open the file, just have the file name visible.
Right click on the file name. Go down to the bottom of the list
and choose ‘properties’.

A window similar to the one on the right should open.

Make sure you have the ‘General’ tab selected and then answer the following
questions.

1. What is the name of your file?

2. What is the file type?

3. What software application would be used to open this file.

4. Click on the ‘change’ button. Are there any other software applications that would
be suitable to open this file?

5. What is the complete file path / location of this file?

6. What is the size of this file?

7. Does the size of the file differ from the size on the disk?

Extension question: Find out why the two sizes might differ

8. On what date was the file created?

9. When was the file last modified?

10. How could you set this file to be ‘Read-only’?

11. What is meant by ‘read only’?

12. Set your file to ‘read only’. Click ‘apply’ and then ‘OK’.
Try to open your file and make a change. What happened?

13. Set your file so that it is no longer ‘read only’.

14. How could you set this file to be ‘hidden’?

15. What do you think is meant by a ‘hidden’ file?

16. Have a look through the other tabs. Name two further features or tools that you
previously hadn’t known about.
