Chapter- Newton’s laws of motion

1. Why is static friction called self-adjusting force.


2. A bullet of mass 10g is fired from a gun of mass 1kg with recoil velocity of gun 5m/s. find the muzzle velocity
3. State the law of conservation of linear momentum and derive it from Newton’s second law of motion.
4. State the laws of kinetic friction. Define coefficient of kinetic friction. Is it less than or greater than coefficient of static
friction.
5. What do you mean by angle of friction. What is angle of friction between two surfaces in contact if the coefficient of
friction is 1/√ 3 ?
6. What is the need of banking a circular road?
7. Derive an expression for maximum permissible speed to avoid slipping if the circular track of radius ‘r’ is banked at
angle θ.
8. The coefficient of friction between the ground and wheels of car moving on a horizontal road is 0.5. If the car starts
from rest, what is the minimum distance in which it can acquire a speed of 72 kmh-1? Take g = 10 m/s-2
9. A circular track of radius 300m is banked at an angle of 15°. If the coefficient of friction is 0.2, what is the optimum
speed of race car to avoid wear and tear of its tyres?

12. Define kinetic energy. Derive an expression for the kinetic energy of a body of mass m moving with velocity v.
13. An elastic spring of force constant k is compressed by an amount x. Show that its potential energy is ½ kx2
14. Show that in case of 1 D elastic collision of two bodies, the relative velocity of separation after the collision is equal to
the relative velocity of approach before the collision.
15. Two bodies of masses m1 and m2 have equal kinetic energies. What is the ratio of the linear momenta?
16. Two ball bearings of mass m each moving in the opposite direction with equal speed v collide head on with each other.
Predict the outcome of the collision, assuming it to be perfectly elastic.
17. A body moves from a point A to b under the action of force. What is the amount of work done? Diagram
18. Two springs of spring constant 1500 N/m and 3000 N/m respectively are stretched with a same force. Find the ratio of
potential energies.

30. A car is moving at a speed of 72 km/h. The diameter of its wheel is 0.5m. If the wheels are stopped in 20 rotations by
applying brakes, then find the angular retardation produced by the brakes.

32. Define orbital velocity of satellite. Obtain an expression for the orbital velocity of a satellite orbiting at height h above
the surface of earth.
33. If the diameter of the earth becomes half its present value but its average density remains unchanged then how would
be the weight of an object on the surface of the earth affected?
34. How much below the surface of the earth does the acceleration due to gravity become 1 % of its value at the earth’s
surface? Radius of the earth = 6400 km
35. What will the required kinetic energy of an object of mass m, so that it may escape?
36. The time period of a satellite in a circular orbit of radius R is T. Find the period of another satellite in a circular orbit of
radius 9R.

42. Derive an expression for its time period of simple pendulum. Does it depend on the mass of the bob?
43. The maximum velocity of a particle, executing simple harmonic motion with an amplitude of 7mm, is 4.4 ms -1. What is
the period of oscillation?
44. What fraction of total energy is kinetic when the displacement of a simple harmonic oscillator is half of its amplitude?
45. Two identical springs of force constant k each are connected in parallel. What will be the equivalent spring constant?
46. A simple harmonic motion is represented by x = 10 sin (20t + 0.5). Write down it’s amplitude, angular frequency,
frequency, time period and initial phase
