Digital Literacy

Dr. Leah S.A. Manio, LPT

Digital Literacy
 Digitalliteracy refers to the ability to
effectively and critically use digital tools
and technologies to find, evaluate, create,
and communicate information. It is a
foundational skill for educators and
learners in today's technology-driven world.
Key Components of Digital Literacy
Accessing Information: Knowing how to find and retrieve digital information using search
engines, databases, or online libraries. Evaluating the credibility and
reliability of sources
Communication and Using email, messaging platforms, and collaboration tools
Collaboration effectively.Understanding appropriate online communication etiquette
(netiquette).
Creating Digital Content: Designing multimedia presentations, videos, and documents using tools
like Canva, PowerPoint, or video editors.Using platforms like blogs,
wikis, or social media to share content.
Critical Thinking Analyzing online content for bias, accuracy, and
relevance.Understanding issues such as digital rights, plagiarism, and
misinformation.
Ethics and Security: Safeguarding personal data and ensuring ethical use of digital
content.Understanding cybersecurity and online privacy.
Making Instructional Materials (IMs)

 InstructionalMaterials (IMs) are

resources developed or used by
educators to facilitate effective
teaching and learning. Digital tools
play a crucial role in creating
innovative and interactive IMs.
Steps to Make Effective IMs

Identify Learning Objectives: Clearly define what students should learn or achieve by using the
IMs.
Select the Appropriate Format: Choose from visual aids, multimedia, e-books, interactive games, or
other formats based on the learning goals and student needs.

Use Authoring Tools Leverage tools like PowerPoint, Canva, Articulate 360, or Google
Slides to design visually appealing and engaging IMs.
Integrate Multimedia Elements: Include videos, animations, audio, and images to cater to diverse
learning styles.
Ensure Accessibility: Use features like alt text, captions, and adaptable formats to make
IMs accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities.
Characteristics of Good/Appropriate IMs
 Effective instructional materials should possess the following characteristics:

Relevance: Align with the curriculum and learning objectives.

Clarity: Present information in a straightforward and easily understandable manner.
Engagement: Include interactive or multimedia elements to maintain student interest.
Flexibility: Adaptable for diverse learning environments (e.g., online, face-to-face,
blended).
Cultural Respect the cultural and social backgrounds of learners.
Appropriateness
:
Accuracy: Provide up-to-date and factual information.
Interactivity: Encourage learner participation and active engagement.
Characteristics of Effective and Efficient
Instructional Tools
Enhances Instructional Instructional materials must be able to facilitate the increase of
Effectiveness students’ achievement in science classes.(Intended Learning
outcomes)
Promotes Active Learning interest is stimulated and students’ focus is redirected.
Learning
Develops Critical The use of technology that can promote higher-level of thinking
Thinking skills. Encourage problem-solving skills.
Accommodates Students have diverse backgrounds and have diverse intelligences
differentiated and learning styles. They learn in different ways and in different
instruction manner. They express their thoughts and ideas also differently.
Motivating Instructional materials are big help to the teacher
Multisensory One of the biggest challenge among teachers

 Newsletters- students will develop the concept formation as
well as scientific vocabulary building and technical writing skills
through drafting, revising, editing and publishing.
 Students will learn to work within team. The following skills
will be developed.
1. Receptiveness to the scientific knowledge used.
2. Writing, spelling, grammar, drafting, revising and editing.
3. Imagination, confidence in using technical writing skills
4. Use of Credible reference.
Important considerations when
preparing for a newsletter:
 Accuracy- ensure the facts are right
 Audience- who will read the paper? Is your story of interest to them?
 Research- Always check facts that you have collected. Use reference
material if needed.
 Images: Don’t leave messages to the last minute. Always think how the
image that can be used with the article can grab the reader’s attention.
 Writing- what is the WOW factor in the story? Start with a good lead.
Remember you want to grab the readers attention and then want to read
more.
