Operating a Comprehensive Program

Educational Counseling
As adult education develops and educational experiences of students
changes, the need to provide adult students with counselling services increases.
The changes brought more complex learning situations, which pose greater threat
for students facing the “physio-psychological, social, and economic changes, taking
place at the different stages of life’. This requires counselling services.

Counselling is learning orientated process carried on

by a professionally competent counsellor in relevant
psychological skills and knowledge, to assist the client with
methods within context of the total personnel program, to
learn more about herself, accept herself, and learn how to
put such understanding into effect in relation to more
clearly perceived, realistically defined goals, to enable the
client become a happier and productive member of society.
This is very essential for adult students who need to find themselves by weighing
the pros and cons of each need to aid necessary adaptation to their newfound role
but it is highly neglected.
A counsellor is therefore not in service to alter the needs identified by
neither adult students nor the administrators but to assist them to cope with the
new psychosocial effects arising from the forces of change, and prepare their mind
for the new financial and social problems associated with changes. The preparation
of the mind also equips the adult students to develop abilities, interests’ aptitudes,
self-esteem, and self-fulfillment in making appropriate decision.

Adult Students and Counselling

Counselling concern is to assist in the
development of education, social, personal and career
or occupational choice but adult students have more
than the four key areas confronting them. Counselling
services therefore to adult students may be
performing the following function.
• To assist the adult students to create new,
more flexible arrangement that will aid persistence,
through prioritization of daily activities, especially
assignments, time spent on work, hobbies, family or
friends and makes decision how to manage the time
well
. • To help adult students to adopt behaviors that is positive through the
development of attitudes that build up self -confidence.
• To assist adult students to see clearly the aims, goals and ideas of learning
situation and be able to know, what has to be done, when to do it and how to do it.
It follows up with the client to monitor the progress or attainability of the goals set.
• To assist adult students in making career and occupational decision with
methods of measuring knowledge and skills like inventories, questionnaire, and
tests to verify or refute any claim.
• To assist in the promotion of advocacy as a tool for raising the profile of
adult students and lifelong learning.
• To keep records and prepare reports related to the needs of adult students,
which will later form baseline data for further studies.
• To make referral in difficult situation.
Defining the Clientele
Clientele meant the people for whom the
programs are intended. In the case of Literacy
Programs, for instance, the clientele are likely to be
those who are basically illiterate and school dropouts
and semiliterate adults will probably form the largest
groups. Such people generally lack advanced reading
skills, frequently are unemployed or are otherwise
socially disadvantaged, and usually have low
incomes. It is important to define and characterize
the clientele in this way in order to plan the most
appropriate delivery system or modality for them and
determine the types of resources they need. The individuals, who are unable to fit
into the system of formal education, due to various problems and become the
clientele of adult education have been stated as follows:

Unemployed Youth
Even when the individuals are well- educated and skilled, still they
experience problems in the acquisition of employment opportunities. It is
unfortunate that even after graduation, individuals are experiencing problems in
finding employment opportunities. The major problem that unemployed youth are
experiencing are, poor communication skills, less subject knowledge, and
entrepreneurship quality. Hence adult education render a significant contribution in
bringing about improvement in their employability skills.

Out of School Children

The children who are out of school experience certain problems, within the
course of acquisition of education. These include, financial problems, learning
disabilities, lack of interest in studies, strict attitude on the parts of the teachers,
distance of school from home and lack of opportunities that would enable them to
achieve academic goals. When the individuals drop out of school prematurely, then
adult education programs help them to hone their academic skills and overcome
various types of problems and challenges.

People with Disability

It has been found that individuals with disabilities have educational

attainment rates. But when these students are willing and determined, in other
words, when they possess this viewpoint that they need to accomplish educational
goals, they do not let their disabilities become barriers within course of acquisition
of education. Adult education is one of the concepts that help the individuals with
disabilities to achieve their goals and objectives in accordance to their priorities and
needs.

Women and Girls

Adult education system is one that renders a significant contribution in

helping them acquire equal rights and opportunities and participate in other social,
political, economic, cultural and religious activities. Hence, through adult education,
women and girls are able to acquire empowerment opportunities and develop
academic skills.

Retired Citizens

Through acquisition of education, the individuals are not only able to augment
their knowledge and skills, but they are able to develop rational and logical thinking.
They are able to make wise decisions, particularly related to implementation of
various task and activities, it is believed to a major extent that education has
enabled them to get engaged in decision making processes in an effective manner.

Planning the Promotion Campaign

Promotion of adult educational program relies on clear, detailed value
propositions. Developing an effective promotional plan relies to a great degree on
the type of programs offer, including the delivery formats, course lengths,
prerequisite knowledge and geographic reach. Defining programs specifically can
lead you to identify one or more target learners, which can then inform decisions on
advertising, promotions and public relations strategies.

Segmentation
All of the factors that go into your promotional plan will depend on the
specific target audience that you choose, and the ideal target audience will depend
on the type of educational programs and services provided. Think about the kind of
people who will benefit most from services to point in the right direction. If you
provide trade-skills certification courses, target working adults looking for a career
change.

Advertising
Place advertisements in outlets that are frequented by your target audience.
If you are targeting low-income adults and families, for example, consider posting
ads in local print newspapers or jobs classifieds. Take full advantage of your
website's search-engine optimization and your established social-media following to
spread the word about new programs at a relatively low cost.

Pricing and Promotions

Price your programs to appeal to your specific target learners. If you are
selling post-graduate continuing-education courses for professionals, for example,
set your price high enough to convey the quality and value of your content. If you
are targeting online students who will learn at their own pace, consider offering
courses for a monthly subscription fee. Use price promotions to give students a
chance to experience your curricula for themselves. Consider hosting free
educational seminars including valuable information.

Public Relations
The service nature of educational programs creates opportunities to serve
surrounding communities while boosting the programs' reputation among potential
learners. Consider offering free, basic classes in low-income communities, for
example, or make large donations to charities promoting adult literacy. Find ways to
give company time and resources to the cause of education for the poor in the
communities you serve and you will gain the respect of influential community
leaders.

Tell stories and focus on outcomes

Adult learners want to know at the outset what they can expect to achieve in
the program. While statistics can be helpful (for example, 95% of students were
employed after completing the program), storytelling is often the more effective
form of marketing. Throughout your website and marketing materials, include
testimonials from current students and program alumni.

1. What are the importance of counseling program to adult learners?
2. What are the roles of counselor in adult education program?
3. Cite examples of program that you will implement and who are your possible
clientele?
