When we look around, we can see a large number of things like desks, chairs etc. These are called
objects. All these objects are made up of one or more kinds of materials. For example, a chair is
made up of wood, so wood is a material. Some more examples of materials are cotton, silk, iron,
coal etc. all these materials are made up of matter and matter is made up of extremely small
particles called atoms. On the basis of types of atoms materials are of following types:-
1. Elements: Materials that are made from only one type of atom are called elements
e.g. Gold, Coal, Silicon etc.
2. Compounds: Materials that are made up of two or more elements combined chemically in
fixed proportion are called compounds. e.g. water which is made up of two atoms of hydrogen
and one atom of oxygen.
Classification of Elements:
Elements can be further classified into:
a) Metals e.g. Copper, Aluminum, Iron
b) Non-Metals e.g. Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulphur, Carbon
c) Metalloids e.g. Silicon, Germanium, etc.

Metals Non-Metals
1. Metals are solid at room temperature 1. Non-Metals can exist as solid, liquid,or gas.
except for mercury whichis the only liquid
metal at room
temperature.
2. Metals are sonorous i.e.they make sound 2. Non-Metals are not sonorous.
when hit with a hard object. Therefore
metals are used for making
bells.
3. Most Metals are strong i.e. large 3. Non-Metals are brittle In nature
forces are needed to break them. i.e. they can easily break when
5. Most metals have high density i.e. 5. Non-Metals have low density.
they feel heavy for their sizes.
6. Metals are lustrous i.e. they have a shiny 6. Non-Metals are non-lustrous (dull).
appearance on their freshly cut surface.
Due to this, they are used for
making on jewelry and coins.
8. Metals are good conductors of heat and 8. Non-Metals are bad conductors of heat
(except Diamond) and
electricity.
electricity (except graphite)
9. Most metals have high melting and 9. Non-Metals have low melting and
boiling points except Diamond and Graphite.
boiling point except Sodium, Potassium,
Cesium, and Gallium.

(II) PLANTS
INSECTIVOROUS PLANTS
A few plants feed on insects for fulfilling their nitrogen requirements. Such insects eating plants
are called insectivorous plants.
Examples: Pitcher Plant, Drosera, Venus flytrap, Utricularia.
Some green plants, which grow in fresh water bogs and rock outcropping capture prey in the forms
of insects, spiders, crustaceans and frogs. This is because the soil present in the bogs, is low in
nitrogen and other elements.
• Insectivorous plants are generally green in colour. Therefore, they can prepare their own food.
• But for preparing proteins they cannot get nitrogen from their surroundings.
• The insects on which they feed, fulfil their nitrogen requirements.
MECHANISM OF NUTRITION IN PITCHER PLANT
• In a pitcher plant, the leaf lamina is modified to form a pitcher-like structure.
• The apex of the leaf is modified into a lid which can open and close the mouth of the pitcher.
• Inside the pitcher, these are hair which are directed downwards.
• When an insect lands on the pitcher, the lid closes and the trapped insect gets entangled in the
hair.
• The insect is digested by the digestive juices secreted in the pitcher.
CONTENT-BASED QUESTION:
1. In the figure shown, the lamina of the leaf of a plant P is modified into a hollow tube. The leaf
apex forms a kind of lids which can open or close the mouth of hollow tube. When an
organism Q falls in the hollow tube, the lid closes automatically killing the organism. The
walls of hollow tube secrete digestive juices which digest the complex substances R present in
the body of the organism to form simpler substances S. These simpler substances are then
absorbed by the walls of the hollow tube and used by the plant P.

(IV) Cells and Organisms
There are millions of different things around us in this world. Some of them are living and some
are not. Plants, insects, frogs, human beings, etc. are living things while sand, soil, air, water, chair
etc. are non-living things.
All animals and plants are living. All these organisms look different from each other, however, all
of them are made up of microscopic unit called cells. Cell was discovered by an English scientist
Robert Hooke. Cells differ in their shapes & size.
All cells, however, show some similarities in their structure. A typical cell consists of following
parts:
a) Cell membrane
b) Cytoplasm
c) Nucleus
d) Cell organelles
a) Cell membrane: It is porous and allows the entry and exit of only selected substances. Thus, it
is called a selectively permeable membrane. In addition, the plant cell and bacterial cell have
an outer wall surrounding the cell membrane. The cell wall in plant cells provides protection.
b) Cytoplasm: It is a thick, jelly-like fluid inside the cell bounded by a cell membrane. All
chemical reactions of cells occur in the cytoplasm.
c) Nucleus: The nucleus controls all metabolic activities of the cell.
d) Cell organelles: Cell organelles are small structures scattered in the cytoplasm. Various types
of organelles present in cells perform different functions. Some of them are as follows.
i) Mitochondria: They are called the powerhouse of cells as they provide energy for all
activities. This energy is produced by the process of respiration.
ii) Vacuoles: They are sac-like structures that store food, and waste and also excrete waste from
the cell.
iii) Ribosomes: These are sites of protein synthesis.
iv) Chloroplasts: These are present only in plant cells. They are green in colour due to the
presence of chlorophyll which helps in photosynthesis.
Differences between plant and animal cells.
1. Size Plant cells are larger in size withdistinct Animal cells are
outlines. smaller than the
plant cells.
