Soil Compaction Questions and Answers

1. Describe the types of equipment commonly used for soil compaction.

Light Equipment: Rammers, Plate Compactors

Medium Equipment: Rollers (Smooth-wheel, Pneumatic, Sheep foot)

Heavy Equipment: Vibratory Rollers, Grid Rollers, Tamping Foot Rollers

2. How does the moisture content of soil affect its compaction?

At optimum moisture content (OMC), maximum dry density is achieved. Too little moisture = poor

lubrication = less compaction. Too much moisture = water occupies space = reduced dry density.

3. Explain the procedure for conducting a Standard Proctor Test.

Dry and sieve soil, add water in increments, compact in 3 layers using standard hammer, weigh

mold, calculate densities, plot dry density vs moisture to find OMC & MDD.

4. Discuss the environmental impacts of excessive soil compaction.

Reduces infiltration, increases runoff, hinders plant growth, promotes erosion, harms soil structure

and biodiversity.

5. How can compaction be measured in the field? Describe field compaction testing

methods.

Sand Cone Method, Rubber Balloon Method, Nuclear Density Gauge - all measure in-situ dry

density.

6. Explain the role of soil compaction in preventing soil erosion.

Compaction increases soil strength and cohesion, reduces permeability and erosion potential.

7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a vibratory roller for soil

compaction?

Advantages: Efficient for granular soils, quick compaction.

Disadvantages: Not suitable for cohesive soils, may damage utilities.

8. How does soil plasticity influence compaction?

Highly plastic soils require more effort; retain water, affecting OMC and dry density.

9. How is the compaction curve used to determine the optimum moisture content for soil

compaction?

By plotting dry density vs moisture content, the peak indicates the OMC for max dry density.

10. What is the impact of under-compaction on the strength of soil?

Reduced strength, increased settlement, higher permeability, potential structural failure.

11. Define 'maximum dry density' in the context of soil compaction.

It is the highest dry unit weight of soil obtained at optimum moisture content in Proctor test.

12. Modified Proctor Test calculation

Wet weight = 4.2 kg, Volume = 1000 cm³, Moisture = 16%

Dry weight = 3.62 kg, Dry density = 1.62 g/cm³

13. Modified Proctor Test calculation

Dry weight = 2.5 kg, Volume = 950 cm³

Dry density = 2.63 g/cm³

14. Percentage of Compaction

Lab dry density = 1.75 g/cm³, Field = 1.60 g/cm³

% Compaction = 91.43%

15. Compaction Efficiency

Before = 1.75 g/cm³, After = 1.85 g/cm³

Efficiency = 5.71%

16. Total Weight of Compacted Soil

Area = 500 m², Thickness = 0.2 m, Volume = 100 m³

Dry Density = 1.75 g/cm³

Weight = 175,000 kg or 175 tons
